[...] In contrast to the excitement and applause that accompanied demos of the latest Silverlight 3 and Blend 3 features, the final release of Internet Explorer 8 (IE8), while welcomed, seemed anti-climatic. Most of IE8’s features have been known for months and its developers have blogged frequently and in great detail as MIX approached. Reaction remains mixed, with a good review from Preston Gralla of Computerworld and a not so great review from Walter Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal ($). [...]

I use Firefox almost exclusively because it is fast and secure and because I like the features and I can set my browser page up as I want it with my back and forward arrows, etc. where I want them (top right, as I am right-handed). I still have to use IE at work because that is the browser the server uses...

As well, some sites are geared to IE and just don't work as well with Firefox.

Given the choice I wouldn't touch IE with a ten-foot pole. ESPECIALLY, after glitches in one of the earlier versions of IE which messed my hard-drive. Given Microsoft's attitude that bugs don't actually have to be fixed by them and the users aren't worth placating when something goes haywire, I am always skeptical when they come out with yet another "fantastic" product that is no better than the previous product but comes in a shinier box.

"It's a rock..."

"Yeah... but look at the box it comes in!"

If I have to sit and wait 30 seconds or a minute (yes... sometimes up to a minute!) to load, that is too damn long, especially when I have to move from page to page frequently. I don't like tabs so I don't use them -- ever.

Although I admit to being a Firefox fanboy, I thought I'd give IE8 a shot. Since I have no extensive experience with IE7 (having generally avoided IE since I started beta testing Firefox a few years ago) I was not familiar with the interface so found it a bit annoying at first.

Determined to be fair, I perservered, and was just about getting to the point of being impressed when Windows XP Pro crashed. I re-booted, went back to the page I'd opened, and it crashed again. I re-booted, opened Fx and went to that page, which displayed perfectly.

I went back to IE, and a couple of other pages were hinky, and didn't respond to the magic button. I also noted that it was slower than Firefox on several pages, and much slower with multiple tabs open. (I commonly keep 10 to 12 open, including Gmail -- a notorious CPU hawg.)

All in all, I'd say a good beginning. I'll keep it on the machine, and use it occasionally when I want some adventure, but I see nothing to wean me away from Firefox and my carefully-selected add-ons.
