			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=amzn'>Amazon.com</a> has fixed the worst design flaws in the Kindle, its popular electronic-book reader, while maintaining the excellent book-buying experience that made the first Kindle model tolerable despite those problems.</p>
<p>This week, the company released the Kindle 2, a new version that is much thinner, a tad lighter and a bit taller. It has much more built-in memory, better navigation controls and a slightly improved screen. I&#8217;ve been testing the Kindle 2 for a few weeks and consider it a vast improvement over the first Kindle, released in late 2007, which was clumsy and annoying to use. Overall, I found the Kindle 2 to be a well-designed, satisfying piece of hardware.</p>

<p>The new model carries the same relatively high $359 price tag as its predecessor, but it offers faster page rendering and 25% better battery life. The catalog of books available on both Kindles has now swelled from about 90,000 in 2007 to over 230,000 today, and titles still typically cost around $10. You can still subscribe to periodicals and blogs, and there is still a crude Web browser built in &#8212; but this gadget is mainly for reading books.</p>
<p>Like its predecessor, the new Kindle has a built-in cellular wireless modem that allows you to download books or update periodicals on the fly, without using a computer. As before, there is no monthly fee for this wireless service.</p>
<p>Most important, Amazon (AMZN) has remedied the most irritating flaws of the original model. It&#8217;s no longer easy to accidentally turn pages, because the page-turning buttons have been redesigned. You no longer have to reach around to the back of the device to turn it on or off. You no longer scroll through menus and text with an odd little wheel whose progress was only visible in a thermometer-like strip separate from the main window. And the book-like cover no longer falls off.</p>
<p>But the improvements in this dedicated e-book reader, while admirable, may pale beside Amazon&#8217;s next move. Amazon says it is working to make the Kindle e-book catalog available on other mobile devices, such as smart phones, that people already own. The online merchant, which is so secretive it makes Steve Jobs seem like Joe Biden, isn&#8217;t saying which devices will get the Kindle service or when. I would bet it will be sooner rather than later.</p>

<p>This makes perfect sense. While the Kindle project has often been compared with Apple&#8217;s iPod, because both are hardware devices seamlessly connected to online-content stores, there is a fundamental difference. Apple (AAPL) offers content to sell hardware. Amazon offers the Kindle to sell content.</p>
<p>If, say, this electronic content were available not only on the Kindle reader, but via Kindle software apps on Apple&#8217;s iPhone or the BlackBerry, the e-book market could explode.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Kindle&#8217;s design has gone from chunky and clunky to smooth and sleek. The power switch is now easily reachable on top of the device, and the all-important buttons for paging forward and backward through a book are now smaller &#8212; and work by pushing them firmly inward toward the screen instead of outward toward the edge of the device. This means they can no longer be easily activated by stray finger movements.</p>
<p>The weird thermometer system has been replaced by a little joystick that moves an on-screen cursor. The Home button is now large, and has been moved off the keyboard, which has been reduced in size, but is still quite usable.</p>
<p>The screen is the same 6-inch, high-resolution E-Ink display, which has a comforting contrast ratio for reading and uses battery power only when you turn the page. But, while it still can&#8217;t display color and still can&#8217;t be read in the dark, its gray-shade graphics are much more detailed.</p>
<p>The battery is now sealed in, but it is larger. Amazon claims you can read for four or five days with the wireless turned on, or up to two weeks with it turned off. In my tests, those claims proved true. I took the Kindle on a trip for a week with the wireless turned off and the battery indicator barely budged.</p>
<p>Memory has been greatly expanded, so you can store 1,500 books, up from 200, though you can no longer add extra memory.</p>
<p>There are also a few cool new features. The Kindle 2 looks up words in the dictionary automatically, as soon as you move the cursor to them. It can optionally read books aloud in a computer voice that&#8217;s surprisingly decent. And, if the wireless function is on, the Kindle service will remember the last page you read in a book and synchronize a second Kindle to that same place in the book.</p>
<p>There are some drawbacks. You still can&#8217;t organize your books into groups of your choice. Amazon now charges $29 for the cover, which was formerly free. And the Kindle still doesn&#8217;t work with some of the open e-book formats that other devices support.</p>
<p>But for serious book readers who are tired of toting around stacks of books and periodicals, the new Kindle is finally a pleasure to use.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Consumer options for viewing popular TV shows and movies directly from the Internet, as opposed to watching them from traditional cable and satellite systems, keep growing. Last week, yet another approach to Internet distribution of commercial video content emerged.</p>
<p>Amazon (AMZN) launched a new service called Amazon Video on Demand, which allows users, for a fee, to watch any of 40,000 TV episodes or movies, in real time, on their Windows and Macintosh computers, and on specially equipped Sony Bravia TV sets. This service replaces an earlier Amazon video offering called Unbox.</p>

<p>I have been testing Amazon Video on Demand and I found it worked well, although it has some limitations. The user interface is clean and smart, the quality is good if you have a fast Internet connection, and there are some clever features. On the downside, it works poorly with the slow connections typical in places like hotels. And there are some studio-imposed limits on what content is offered and how you can view it.</p>
<p>To date, there have been three major models for legally getting TV shows and movies from the Web.</p>
<p>In one, best represented by Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) widely used iTunes store, the TV shows and movies are ad-free, but you pay for each. All of this content is downloaded to your Windows or Macintosh computer or your Apple TV set-top box for later viewing, even when you&#8217;re not connected to the Internet &#8212; though on Apple TV you can start watching while the material is being downloaded.</p>
<p>A second model, best represented by the studio-owned Hulu.com, presents movies and TV shows on a Windows or Macintosh personal computer free of charge, but requires you to watch commercials that can&#8217;t be skipped. The TV shows and movies you view on Hulu are &#8220;streamed&#8221; rather than downloaded, meaning they are meant to be viewed immediately, in real time, rather than stored for viewing when you&#8217;re not connected to the Internet.</p>
<p>The third online model is best represented by Netflix (NFLX), the popular DVD distributor. It offers a &#8220;Watch Instantly&#8221; streaming option on Windows PCs or on TVs equipped with a special set-top box, for a small portion of its large catalog of TV shows and movies. These videos are ad-free and don&#8217;t carry an individual charge, but require a monthly subscription fee.</p>
<p>The new Amazon Video on Demand service is a hybrid of these others. As on iTunes, the TV shows and movies it offers are ad-free and purchased individually, don&#8217;t require a subscription, and work on both Windows and the Mac, plus on one type of set-top box. In Amazon&#8217;s case, that&#8217;s Sony&#8217;s Bravia Internet Link, a $299 device that works only with Sony (SNE) TVs.</p>
<p>But, like Hulu and Netflix and unlike Amazon&#8217;s older Unbox service, the new Amazon Video on Demand service offers videos via real-time streaming. In many cases, it also allows downloading, iTunes-style, to Windows PCs (but not Macs) and to TiVo devices attached to a TV. The videos can&#8217;t be streamed in real time using a TiVo (TIVO).</p>
<p>Amazon&#8217;s streaming videos are viewed in any of the major Web browsers and don&#8217;t require any special software. I tested the new service on both Windows PCs and Macs, and on a Sony Bravia TV equipped with the $299 adapter box. In my tests, Amazon&#8217;s videos looked quite good over a fast Internet connection. However, on a typically lousy hotel Internet connection, the movies were often grainy and kept stuttering.</p>
<p>The new service doesn&#8217;t yet offer videos in high definition, something Apple just announced this week it is adding for some TV shows. Amazon says it is working on HD.</p>
<p>Amazon&#8217;s user interface for the new service is very nice. All of your purchased videos are available in a library stored on the company&#8217;s servers, so you can easily watch them again and again if they are purchased, or resume a partly watched rental. And the service remembers where you stopped watching a video and resumes it at that point, even if you started it on, say, a Dell (DELL), and resumed it on a Mac.</p>
<p>On the downside, the new Amazon service isn&#8217;t always simple or consistent. For instance, you can watch only two videos at a time, and not all titles can be either streamed and downloaded, or be either purchased or rented. Most rentals last 24 hours, but some differ.</p>
<p>Selection was OK, but not great. Because of studio policies, many current and recent movie hits aren&#8217;t available. There are gaps as well in the TV selection. For example, while iTunes offers the current second season of the excellent &#8220;Mad Men&#8221; series, Amazon has only the first season.</p>
<p>Prices also can be confusing. Amazon rents most movies for $3.99 and sells them for between $9.99 and $14.99. TV shows generally cost $1.99. But some titles carry different prices, albeit these are often lower.</p>
<p>All in all, Amazon Video on Demand is a good service for people who prefer paying for ad-free TV shows and movies, and is another strong step in the Internet&#8217;s rising competition with traditional TV.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Internet presents a real dilemma for parents with younger children. On the one hand, it&#8217;s filled with fun and wholesome sites for kids, and lots of educational material. On the other, it teems with inappropriate content and potentially dangerous means of communicating with strangers.</p>
<p>There are tools for dealing with the problem, most commonly, filtering software that attempts to bar sexual, violent and other objectionable material. But these can frustrate kids and parents, by either blocking too many things or not blocking enough.</p>

<p>Some other approaches, such as the parental controls built right into the latest Windows (MSFT) and Macintosh (AAPL) operating systems, offer parents more control by allowing them to specify what Web sites a child can access. But that requires close and constant involvement by the parent as the child seeks access to more Web sites.</p>
<p>This week marks the launch of a parental-control service with a somewhat different approach. It&#8217;s called KidZui, and it aims to offer kids a safe subset of the Internet where they can roam freely without triggering parental worry. KidZui, for children ages 3 to 12, hopes to emphasize the positive, rather than the negative.</p>
<p>The service, from a San Diego company of the same name, claims to encompass 500,000 safe sites, photos and videos, ranging from pop culture to science, comics and games to history. You can watch the latest &#8220;American Idol&#8221; contestant, learn about dinosaurs, delve into history or visit popular kids&#8217; sites, such as Webkinz and Club Penguin.</p>
<p>The sites, photos and videos included in KidZui are approved by a team of about 200 parents and teachers across the country, and are ranked by age, so that a site that might be right for an 11-year-old isn&#8217;t served up to a 4-year-old.</p>
<p>While a child can establish a list of friends in KidZui, and can share content with them, there is no instant-messaging or email function.</p>
<p>KidZui isn&#8217;t free, and it can&#8217;t be accessed via a regular Web browser. Instead, you must download a special KidZui browser, from <a href="http://kidzui.com" rel="external">kidzui.com</a>, that runs on either Windows or Macintosh computers. I tested it on both platforms, and it downloaded quickly and installed smoothly.</p>
<p>The service nominally costs $99.95 a year, or $9.95 a month, but there is a 30-day free trial and an introductory rate of $49.95 a year, or $4.95 a month. It has no ads, other than those already present on Web sites kids visit.</p>
<p>A key selling point of the service is that busy parents can simply set up KidZui and trust that their kids will be safe online. To that end, the program can be optionally configured, so that a child can&#8217;t escape from it to use the computer&#8217;s standard browser, for example. A parent can set KidZui to launch when the computer starts up, in full-screen mode. In this mode, KidZui automatically disables or hides the common keystrokes, icons, commands and techniques that allow users to switch to, or to start up, other programs.</p>
<p>In addition, when KidZui is running in this locked-down mode, the child can be barred from quitting KidZui without a parent&#8217;s password. In my tests over the past week, I found some loopholes in this lockdown system, but the company plugged each leak I turned up. I can&#8217;t swear that a clever kid won&#8217;t be able to escape from KidZui, but the program blocks most obvious exits.</p>
<p>Inside the software, the company has tried to create a fun, lighthearted world. Each child is represented by a &#8220;Zui,&#8221; a cartoon-like character that can be customized with hair, clothing and other features. There are lots of sound effects, and kids can rate content with illustrated tags ranging from &#8220;best&#8221; and &#8220;cool&#8221; to &#8220;boring&#8221; or &#8220;gross.&#8221;</p>
<p>When a child types in a term like &#8220;ocean&#8221; KidZui offers a list of related terms as well, to guide further exploration. If a child types in a search term or a Web address that has been banned from the KidZui universe, a message appears saying &#8220;This page isn&#8217;t available on KidZui, but your parents can add it for you.&#8221; This applies not only to terms typed into KidZui&#8217;s own search bar, but also to terms a child enters at sites like Wikipedia or in the search boxes embedded in other sites. The main pages of Google and Yahoo can&#8217;t be summoned.</p>
<p>If a search or Web address is new to KidZui, a different message appears promising that it will be reviewed.</p>
<p>I did find some holes in this system. For instance, I was able to get to The Wall Street Journal&#8217;s Web site and do an internal search on &#8220;Spitzer,&#8221; which turned up a story on the former New York governor&#8217;s sex scandal.</p>
<p>Parents can get detailed reports about the KidZui activities of each of their children and can tweak the content they can see by adding specific types of material, such as &#8220;athletic violence,&#8221; and approving or blocking specific Web sites.</p>
<p>For parents who want to allow limited Web use by their young children without constantly micromanaging their online activities, KidZui may be worth a try, but don&#8217;t expect it to be perfect.</p>
