<p>Among its many features, Apple&#8217;s iPhone is equipped with GPS and includes manual, written driving directions built into its standard Maps application. But that function doesn&#8217;t automatically bring up each turn sequentially, and it lacks voice prompts.</p>
<p>Now, a number of companies have launched, or will soon launch, iPhone apps that do offer voice-prompted, automated, turn-by-turn navigation. Of course, many other cellphones have long offered such services. But the iPhone&#8217;s large screen, decent mono speaker and large selection of car mounting kits make it a tempting navigation device.</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve been testing four such apps: from TomTom, Navigon, AT&#038;T (T) and Fullpower. The last, called MotionX GPS Drive, isn&#8217;t available in Apple&#8217;s app store as I write this. In the case of the Navigon MobileNavigator, which is already available, I tested an updated version expected to hit the store shortly.</p>

TomTom’s iPhone app</div>
<p>One big downside: Because Apple doesn&#8217;t allow third-party iPhone apps to run simultaneously with the device&#8217;s core functions, any incoming or outgoing phone call will interrupt all these apps during routing. When the call is over, the apps will automatically resume and continue your route. And none of these apps work on the original iPhone, only the 3G and 3GS.</p>
<p>Some of the apps take up a large amount of space on your iPhone, because they store all their maps locally. Others are much slimmer, because they download the apps on the fly, but these require you to have good cellular or Wi-Fi coverage at least at the start of a navigation session.</p>
<p>In my tests, on both local streets and highways, all four apps ate up big chunks of the iPhone&#8217;s battery life. So, I recommend that you employ a car charger when running them. Also, they all work much better and more safely if you use a windshield or dashboard mount.</p>
<p>None of the apps stood out as much better than the others at navigation, though they have different styles and features. All include the usual lists of local businesses and other points of interest.</p>
<p><strong>TomTom:</strong> The U.S. and Canada navigation app costs $100 and takes up a whopping 1.2 gigabytes of space on your phone. But there is no subscription fee and the maps are always present. Like a stand-alone navigation device, it uses big icons and lettering in its menus. It worked OK in my tests, except that it took a little longer than the others to acquire a GPS satellite signal to accurately situate itself. TomTom&#8217;s app doesn&#8217;t have live traffic information, doesn&#8217;t provide a text summary of your planned route, doesn&#8217;t announce street names and doesn&#8217;t integrate control of the iPhone&#8217;s music player.</p>
<p>Like all of its rivals, TomTom can fetch destinations from addresses in your iPhone contact list. But it didn&#8217;t understand a typical Washington, D.C., street name, such as &#8220;11th St., NE.&#8221; TomTom plans an extra-cost mounting kit that includes a better speaker, a power plug and a GPS receiver more potent than the iPhone&#8217;s.</p>
<p><strong>Navigon MobileNavigator:</strong> This app costs $90, and it takes up 1.3 GB on the iPhone because it also stores all the maps. There is no recurring fee. I thought Navigon had the cleanest interface and the best 3D map view, including representations of some highway-exit and speed-limit signs. It also barks the word &#8220;caution&#8221; when you are speeding. </p>
<p>But the Navigon voice was the least distinct, and while it generally did OK, it thought my D.C. test address was a bridge. It also lacks a route summary and live-traffic reports, though the update I tested now announces street names and integrates music control.</p>
<p><strong>MotionX-GPS Drive:</strong> Of all the apps, this one looks and works most like a typical iPod app, and least like a navigation program ported from another device. Its main screen has a clever menu arranged in a circle. It&#8217;s also fairly small—just 10 megabytes or so. But it must download maps and other info each time you start a route. This also allows it to update the information on the fly. Drive also is potentially the cheapest of the four apps I tested. It will cost $1.99 and include a 30-day free trial. After that, it&#8217;s $25 a year. </p>
<p>This app worked well in my tests, and is packed with features, including live traffic, a  route summary, and integrated music control. It understood my D.C. test address, but it doesn&#8217;t announce street names, and its function buttons are very small and labeled with tiny type.</p>
<p><strong>AT&#038;T Navigator:</strong> The iPhone version of this existing service, like Drive, downloads maps and info on the fly, but it takes up even less space on the phone—just 2.3 megabytes. That means you need a good connection at the start of a trip. It worked OK for me. Its interface is clean, and it has a route summary, live traffic and announcement of street names. It also understood my D.C. test address. And it synchronizes saved addresses with a Web site. But it is potentially the priciest. The app itself is free but usage costs $10 a month.</p>
<p>None of these apps is perfect, but each adds a new dimension to the iPhone.</p>

Cellphone location-sharing service Glympse is simple, useful and a non-creepy way to share your whereabouts when you want someone to know.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There&#8217;s a tendency in the Twitter era for people to share copious details of their lives with online pals. One way to do that is through new mobile-phone services that let people share their physical locations using the tracking technology inside modern cellphones.</p>
<p>While these location-sharing services have some interesting possibilities, they also raise some disturbing implications for privacy &#8212; or maybe it just seems that way if, like me, you&#8217;re over 35 years old. Lately I&#8217;ve been testing a cellphone location-sharing service that I found simple, useful and non-creepy enough that I can imagine people thirtysomething and older using it.</p>

Send a &#8216;Glympse&#8217; to share your location</div>
<p>The free service is called Glympse, from a company of the same name that has designed it to share your location with friends and colleagues in small increments of time &#8212; glimpses, as the name implies, of your whereabouts. Glympse just released a test version of the service as an application for the G1, a phone offered by T-Mobile that runs Google&#8217;s (GOOG) Android operating system.</p>
<p>The company will release versions of Glympse for BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, iPhone and Nokia (NOK) phones in the coming weeks. Users can download the Glympse software onto G1 phones through Android Market, the online clearinghouse for applications for Android phones.</p>
<p>I used Glympse on an iPhone and a G1 and, for comparison, tried out a couple of other location-sharing applications, Google Latitude and Loopt. When you start the Glympse application, it identifies where you are on a map using a combination of location technologies in cellphones, including GPS satellites, Wi-Fi hot spots and phone towers.</p>
<p>Your location isn&#8217;t shared with others until you &#8220;send a Glympse&#8221; to someone. The software allowed me to send a Glympse with my location for selected chunks of time lasting anywhere from zero minutes to four hours. Picking zero minutes shared only my location at the moment of sending, while selecting four hours meant the recipients of my Glympse could track me for that period of time, wherever I went.</p>
<p>The sender of a Glympse can address it by entering a recipient&#8217;s email address, or a mobile-phone number for a text message. Recipients get a message with a link to a map on a Web page. A nice thing about the service is that it doesn&#8217;t require recipients to have the Glympse software, though the experience is richer when they do.</p>
<p>Sending a Glympse can be helpful anytime a friend, family member or colleague is expecting you. You can send a Glympse that lets a friend know you&#8217;re stuck in heavy traffic (although it&#8217;s wise to do that before you&#8217;re on the road to stay safe and, in some states, to avoid breaking the law). Parents can insist that teens send a Glympse when they go out for the evening.</p>
<p>Bryan Trussel, the CEO of Glympse, sent me several Glympses with short messages like &#8220;late lunch meeting&#8221; and &#8220;headed home&#8221; to explain where he was going. On the G1, I could see an icon representing Mr. Trussel moving around a map as he drove through the streets of Redmond, Wash., including his speed. I was also able to see traffic conditions, which would have been helpful if he had been running late. Glympse gave me a similar view of his location through a Web browser running on my PC. On the iPhone, the experience was more static, forcing me to reload a Web page to get a fresh view of Mr. Trussel&#8217;s whereabouts. Glympse says it will fix this so users of the iPhone can watch someone&#8217;s location in real time.</p>
<p>I encountered a bug with the service when I sent a couple Glympses to my own cellphone and that of a colleague &#8212; both BlackBerrys and neither of which had Glympse software. Both Glympses linked to high-level maps suggesting I was somewhere in North America, which wasn&#8217;t very helpful, even if it was technically accurate. The company couldn&#8217;t figure out what the problem was, and it eventually stopped happening for me too.</p>
<p>Once a Glympse expires, the service no longer tracks the sender&#8217;s location. It will show the sender&#8217;s last known location for 48 hours after the Glympse expires. Glympse may some day use your location information to target advertising to you, but the company isn&#8217;t doing that for now.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m far more comfortable with this form of finite location-sharing than the approach used by other services. Google Latitude lets you share your location to only a list of friends. It gives you the option of turning location sharing off or, through a &#8220;city level&#8221; option, it reveals only your general whereabouts. Loopt similarly allows you to set options to show, or hide your location from all or some online friends. A feature called Loopt Mix lists strangers you can send messages to in your general vicinity &#8212; many of whom seemed to be looking for romantic partners in my area.</p>
<p>Despite these controls, I easily forgot I was sharing my location with these two services. This might be fine for someone who enjoys being tracked down by friends during a night out on the town or is diligent about changing privacy settings when they want to go stealth.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m too lazy to manage my privacy so closely though. I don&#8217;t mind giving friends a look at my location, but only if I know the invitation isn&#8217;t open-ended.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Of the most famous computer makers, only two, <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=aapl'>Apple</a> and <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=SNE'>Sony</a>, primarily aim their products at consumers, instead of the generally conservative IT departments of big companies. So, it&#8217;s no surprise that these two tech giants often turn out especially stylish and daring hardware designs.</p>
<p>But Sony (SNE), unlike Apple (AAPL), isn&#8217;t especially skilled at software and doesn&#8217;t make its own operating system. This situation partly explains why Sony&#8217;s latest gorgeous, daring laptop, the shockingly tiny Vaio P, turns heads everywhere, but is pretty frustrating to use.</p>

<p>I love the look and feel and boldness of the design, but can&#8217;t recommend this sleek machine for most users because it is very slow and has poor battery life. Oh, and it sells for double or triple the price of other small laptops, commonly called netbooks.</p>
<p>The Vaio P is mainly undone because it comes with Vista Home Premium, the edition of Windows that is sluggish and a memory hog. Most competing small notebooks ship with the more nimble, but older, Windows XP. And the Vista problem is made worse by the processor inside the machine, which is an especially slow version of the Intel (INTC) Atom chip often used in netbooks.</p>
<p>While I was testing the Vaio P, which costs between $900 and $1,500, nearly everyone who saw it asked to try it. That&#8217;s because it doesn&#8217;t look like any other laptop I&#8217;ve seen. It&#8217;s long, narrow and very thin &#8212; with roughly the same footprint as one of those plastic folders waiters use to bring you the check at a restaurant. It can be tucked into the pocket of an overcoat or a pair of cargo pants, and comes in several handsome colors.</p>

<p>These unusual dimensions allow for only a small eight-inch screen, which is much wider than it is tall. But the Vaio P&#8217;s screen boasts very high resolution, so that it can display almost as much of a typical Web page or document as the more common 13.3-inch screens on larger laptops.</p>
<p>Sony also has done a great job with the keyboard on the Vaio P. Its keys are surprisingly large and well-spaced for such a tiny computer, with a wide space bar, and large &#8220;Enter&#8221; and &#8220;Backspace&#8221; keys. Instead of a touch pad, it uses a midkeyboard pointing stick.</p>
<p>And this little laptop is packed with nice features, including a built-in 3G cellular modem to supplement its Wi-Fi and free GPS for mapping. The P also comes standard with two gigabytes of memory. The $900 base model comes with a small 60-gigabyte hard disk; and the $1,200 midrange model has a 64-gigabyte solid state drive &#8212; which is more durable and uses less power. The top model, at $1,500, comes with a more reasonably sized 128-gigabyte solid state drive.</p>
<p>There are two USB ports, but the Ethernet and external video ports are relegated to a little module that snaps on to the power adapter. All models come with a quick-start system that brings up a stripped-down Web browser and media player without waiting for Windows to load. This is a boon, but it&#8217;s crudely designed.</p>
<p>Sony positions the Vaio P as a &#8220;lifestyle&#8221; computer, a companion to your main computer that&#8217;s almost as portable as a smart phone, but can do more. Unfortunately, once you actually start using it, that promise is dashed by its awful performance.</p>
<p>In my tests of the Vaio P, programs launched painfully slowly, delays were common and start-up and reboot times were glacial. I timed a reboot at nearly four minutes, and had to give up on an attempt to open 15 Web sites simultaneously in tabs in the usually speedy Firefox Web browser. Video playback was choppy.</p>
<p>There are some other problems that can&#8217;t be blamed on Vista. The speakers are worse than those on some cellphones. And the tiny mouse buttons are so close to the bottom edge of the keyboard that they are easy to hit accidentally. Also, I couldn&#8217;t get the GPS to work.</p>
<p>Using my tough battery test, in which I turn off all power-saving features, I got less than two hours, even on a solid-state model, suggesting a typical battery life of maybe 2.5 hours. Sony sells a double-sized battery, but it adds a bit of weight and bulk to the sleek box, and costs $129.</p>
<p>I also tested two experimental configurations of the Vaio P, which show that there&#8217;s hope for it in the future. One of these models had been tweaked by Sony to turn off many of Vista&#8217;s performance-sapping and power-hungry features. This box ran better, though still not great. Sony plans to offer a software download that will make these tweaks automatically.</p>
<p>Much better was a Vaio P with the forthcoming version of Windows, called Windows 7, installed. This version of Windows, likely to ship by this fall, made the Vaio P perform acceptably, despite its wimpy processor. Everything was much snappier, and reboot times were cut in half.</p>
<p>The Vaio P may be a beautiful device that&#8217;s just ahead of its time. Even if you can afford it, I&#8217;d advise waiting for the version with Windows 7.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>While <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=aapl'>Apple</a>&#8217;s Macintosh computers are known for handsome hardware design, what really makes the Mac distinctive is its built-in software. That software includes a suite of multimedia programs, called iLife, which is preinstalled, free, on every new Mac.</p>
<p>The iLife software has integrated photo, video, music and Web-design applications meant for average, nontechnical consumers. It is better, in my view, than any comparable offering on the Windows platform, even those that cost extra.</p>
<p>This week, Apple (AAPL) released the latest version of the suite, called iLife &rsquo;09, and I have been testing it for a while. It includes five programs: iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, iWeb and iDVD. The new version will be bundled on new Macs, and current Mac owners can upgrade to it for $79.</p>

<p>This latest iteration isn&#8217;t a radical revision of iLife, and I wouldn&#8217;t say that it&#8217;s a must-have upgrade for current Mac owners. But three of the programs &#8212; iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand &#8212; have significant new features that make them more appealing and useful.</p>
<p>In particular, iPhoto now has the ability to detect and identify faces in your photos; to identify and map the location where they were shot; and to directly post sets of photos to, and synchronize them with, the popular online services Facebook and Flickr.</p>
<p>I focused my tests on iPhoto&#8217;s sexiest new feature &#8212; face recognition. It worked OK, but it wasn&#8217;t as good as I had expected from software made by Apple.</p>
<p>GarageBand, a powerful but easy tool allowing nonprofessionals to mix and produce music, now offers beautifully produced video lessons in how to play the two most popular instruments: guitar and piano. There are some free lessons built in, but you can also buy, for $5 each, lessons from famous artists such as Sting and Norah Jones.</p>
<p>In iMovie, you can now do precision editing of clips. You also can insert one clip in the middle of another by simply dragging and dropping; insert animated maps into travel movies; and apply handsome themes that can make a home movie look like, say, a scrapbook. There&#8217;s also a new tool that stabilizes jerky footage, like video shot from a moving car, although Apple warns that this process can take hours.</p>
<p>For me, however, the most important improvements in iLife &rsquo;09 are in iPhoto, Apple&#8217;s program for organizing, editing and sharing digital pictures. The top two are face recognition and geo-tagging, the ability to tag a photo with its location. Neither of these features is unique to iPhoto. For instance, the Web-based version of Google&#8217;s (GOOG) Picasa photo software has face recognition, and Flickr, a Yahoo (YHOO) online service, has location tagging. But Apple has enabled them in iPhoto in its typical handsome, easy manner.</p>
<p>There are two new views of your photos in iPhoto &rsquo;09. One, called Faces, organizes all the photos in which faces have been identified. You click on a thumbnail bearing a person&#8217;s face and get an expanded display showing all of the photos identified as including that person.</p>
<p>The second, called Places, shows a Google map with pins in the places where the locations of your photos have been identified. Click on a pin, and see a display of all the photos shot at that location.</p>
<p>Face recognition takes several steps. First, iPhoto analyzes your photos to pick out the faces, which are then shown enclosed in a rectangle when you click the new &#8220;name&#8221; button. You then are prompted to type in a name under the rectangle identifying each face. Once you&#8217;ve identified the same person in multiple photos, iPhoto begins to identify that face in any additional photos. If you bring up a picture of a person you&#8217;ve identified, and click &#8220;confirm name,&#8221; iPhoto will show you other pictures it thinks include the same person, and ask that you confirm its suggestions.</p>
<p>In my tests, on two different Macs with thousands of photos, face recognition worked most of the time. But I was too often disappointed. In a surprisingly large minority of cases, iPhoto failed to detect the presence of a face, even when it was large and clear, or to correctly identify faces it did detect, even after I had named or confirmed the same face in dozens or scores of other pictures.</p>
<p>The program sometimes confused men and women, and in a few cases even claimed animals or inanimate objects were people. It rarely detected faces shot from the side, even if they were sharp and obvious. The program also was slow to analyze newly imported photos, or to synchronize name tags already entered on Facebook, a feature Apple touts.</p>
<p>The Places feature worked much better, automatically recognizing the location of pictures taken from devices with built-in GPS tagging, like Apple&#8217;s own iPhone, and optionally showing a map when you click on a photo. It was also easy to manually enter a location for an entire &#8220;event,&#8221; or group, of photos taken at one time.</p>
<p>I still like and recommend iPhoto and iLife. But, in my opinion, the new face-recognition system isn&#8217;t up to Apple&#8217;s self-proclaimed high standards, and isn&#8217;t reliable enough to justify an upgrade all by itself.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The parade of iPhone lookalikes continues. Soon after <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=aapl'>Apple</a> (AAPL) announced the first iPhone a year ago, factories in Asia, at the behest of U.S. phone carriers, were asked to respond to the sleek, touch-screen device. Some already have reached America; more are coming.</p>
<p>The latest to arrive is the Samsung Instinct, to be introduced by <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=S'>Sprint</a> (S) on June 20. I&#8217;ve been testing the Instinct, and while it isn&#8217;t a bad phone and has some features the Apple product lacks, it&#8217;s no match for the iPhone. The manufacturers haven&#8217;t replicated the iPhone&#8217;s greatest strength: beautiful, powerful, breakthrough software.</p>

<p>Also, the timing of the Instinct is unfortunate. It was designed to go up against the first iPhone. Sprint even has a Web site (<a href="http://nowisgood.com" rel="external">nowisgood.com</a>) comparing the two devices. But the Instinct will go on sale only three weeks before Apple and AT&amp;T (T) start selling the new 3G iPhone, the second-generation model announced earlier this week. This second iPhone model corrects some of the first model&#8217;s main weaknesses, wiping out some advantages Sprint hoped the Instinct would have.</p>
<p>Before getting into the details of the Instinct, a few words about the new iPhone, its main competition. I don&#8217;t do full reviews of products until I have tested them extensively, but my first impressions of the 3G iPhone are largely positive.</p>
<p>The price of the new iPhone&#8217;s base model, which comes with 8 gigabytes of memory, is $199, a 50% price cut from the comparable first-generation model. Yet, it now works on AT&amp;T&#8217;s fastest data network, promising anywhere from two to five times the speed of its predecessor. It also has GPS for tracking your location, and fully supports over-the-air synchronization of email, contacts and calendars &#8212; through Microsoft (MSFT) Exchange in corporations or via a similar new consumer service from Apple called MobileMe. And you&#8217;ll be able to download directly to the phone a whole universe of third-party programs, from productivity software to games.</p>
<p>On the downside, the new iPhone&#8217;s camera remains very basic and still can&#8217;t capture video. For people who prefer physical keyboards, the iPhone will still fall short. It continues to include only a virtual onscreen keyboard. And the iPhone remains locked to a single carrier in the U.S., AT&amp;T, which will charge $10 more per month for unlimited data consumption on the device.</p>
<p>The iPhone, along with some competitors like the BlackBerry, are really hand-held computers that happen to make voice calls. And they&#8217;re getting more powerful and innovative. So far, competitors like the Instinct, while trying to look like iPhones, are still mainly voice devices with so-so computing features tacked on.</p>
<p>For instance, while the Instinct is a touch-screen device, it lacks the iPhone&#8217;s &#8220;multi-touch&#8221; system, which includes features that recognize multiple fingers and gestures, and allows actions like shrinking a photo by &#8220;pinching&#8221; it. The touch system on the Instinct is more like that on an ancient ATM than a cutting-edge gadget, even though it has a gimmicky feedback mechanism that gives you a tiny vibration-jolt when you press an icon.</p>
<p>Physically, the Instinct looks a lot like the iPhone &#8212; a dark slab without a physical keyboard or many buttons dominated by a large screen. It&#8217;s a bit longer and thicker than the iPhone, but a tad narrower and lighter. Its screen is smaller than the iPhone&#8217;s and has lower resolution.</p>

<p>The Instinct has the same $199 price tag as the new iPhone, after a rebate and with a two-year contract. Service plans are likely to start at around $70, in line with the minimum monthly fee AT&amp;T will charge on the new iPhone. But it comes with just one-quarter of the memory the base iPhone includes.</p>
<p>Like the 3G iPhone, the Instinct runs on a fast cellular network that promises speeds similar to what people get with slow home DSL service. In my tests, it seemed to deliver this promised speed. It also has GPS and navigation. But, unlike the iPhone, the Instinct lacks Wi-Fi wireless networking, which can often be faster than the cellphone networks or available where there is no speedy cellphone coverage.</p>
<p>The Instinct has a removable battery, something the iPhone lacks. And Sprint claims 5.7 hours of talk time on one charge, more than the five hours that Apple claims for its 3G model. Sprint&#8217;s new baby has a few other features that even the latest iPhone omits, such as a built-in service for viewing TV shows and a voice-command system.</p>
<p>But I found its email system and Web browser to be less sophisticated than the iPhone&#8217;s or the BlackBerry&#8217;s. I also thought the phone&#8217;s onscreen keyboard was harder to use than Apple&#8217;s. It would flip unpredictably from landscape to portrait mode. The Instinct does allow handwriting recognition as an alternative, something the iPhone doesn&#8217;t.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re a devoted Sprint customer, or want to avoid AT&amp;T, the Instinct is an OK choice. But it&#8217;s no iPhone.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As smart as in-car navigation devices are, they could be smarter. They could talk to each other via the Internet and share information on how fast traffic is moving on the roads they have just traveled. And they could also use the Internet to let you search for places of interest, get map updates, or even receive new destinations wirelessly.</p>
<p>Starting this week, just such a smarter navigation box is hitting the market. Called the Dash Express, this $400 product looks a lot like units from better-known firms such as Garmin (GRMN) and Magellan. Like them, it uses GPS satellite signals to locate your car on an easily seen map, and to route you to destinations and places of interest, using both visual and spoken instructions.</p>

<p>But, unlike any other in-car navigation device I&#8217;ve seen, each Dash Express, from a Silicon Valley start-up called Dash Navigation, becomes part of a network, connected to the company via the Internet. Each device not only receives and displays information, but transmits it as well, acting as a &#8220;probe,&#8221; as Dash calls it, to measure local traffic speeds. This information is compiled by the company and then broadcast back to all other Dash units in your area, almost instantly painting streets on your map with color codes to indicate traffic speeds.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing a Dash Express in and around my home base of Washington, D.C., and, while it isn&#8217;t perfect, I like it a lot. If the company sells enough units to create a solid network, Dash could radically improve in-car navigation.</p>
<p>That &#8220;if&#8221; is the big catch with Dash &#8212; in order to get its special benefits, enough units must be sold in your city to feed the network with sufficient traffic data. According to the company, for most cities just &#8220;several hundred&#8221; units would be enough to provide more than half of the significant traffic data it requires for major roads during normal commuting hours.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Dash, like some of its competitors, makes use of limited traffic data provided by a commercial vendor. This information, which mainly covers major highways, is presented as a dotted line on the Dash maps, to indicate that it may be stale. By contrast, fresh input from Dash&#8217;s own network is presented as a solid line.</p>
<p>For the next 30 days, the Dash Express will be available exclusively at Amazon.com (AMZN) for $399.99. You get three free months of Dash&#8217;s service, including traffic and other features, such as wireless map updates. After that, the service costs between $9.99 and $12.99 a month. That fee includes the cost of the Internet connection used by the Dash Express, which is achieved using both cellphone and Wi-Fi networks.</p>
<p>To test the Dash, I had to create a tiny two-car network. My colleague Katie Boehret and I each drove the same route in Dash-equipped cars, about 15 minutes apart. The route included everything from the smallest residential streets to large local commuter arteries to the jammed Washington Beltway.</p>
<p>Katie went first, and by the time I retraced her route, my Dash unit&#8217;s screen was ablaze with solid-color streets indicating the traffic speeds she had encountered: green for free-flowing traffic, yellow for moderate congestion, red for stop-and-go conditions. Even two-lane local roads, the kind where traffic data are almost never available, were colored in.</p>
<p>Once Dash begins selling, the company won&#8217;t rely much on the information provided by a single driver like we did. It will average and weight the information it receives, to eliminate odd results from especially fast or slow drivers, and to emphasize the newest data. Each Dash reading will time out after no more than 25 minutes, turning solid lines into dotted ones as a warning that the information may be old.</p>
<p>I did run into a couple of glitches during the test. For one small road Katie had traveled, I received no Dash data. And on the return trip, Dash tried to route me right into a Beltway traffic jam, even though its screen showed that area in red. The company is working a future feature, called My Route, that would allow savvy drivers to order the device to use the local routes they prefer, to avoid such jams.</p>
<p>Dash Express has a host of other nice features, explained online at <a href="http://dash.net" rel="external">dash.net</a>. Instead of giving you one route to your destination, it offers three choices, one of which supposedly incorporates current traffic conditions. It allows you to type in a destination on a personalized MyDash Web page and have that address sent wirelessly to your Dash unit, ready to be selected. You could even have a colleague or friend send you a destination while you are driving, so you don&#8217;t have to pull over to type it in or, worse, try typing while driving.</p>
<p>And the Dash also connects to the Internet to perform searches for local businesses, and then routes you there. Plus, you can create your own lists of favorite places and points of interest, or share those created by others and send these to your Dash from the MyDash Web site.</p>
<p>Dash Express finally brings the power of the Internet, and of community information, to auto navigation. If it becomes popular, it could be a big deal.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I am writing these words on a new laptop computer that packs a full-size screen and keyboard into a body that&#8217;s quite thin and light. And it has a solid-state drive with no moving parts instead of a hard disk.</p>
<p>But this isn&#8217;t the much-touted Apple MacBook Air, introduced last month with all those qualities. Instead, it&#8217;s a new ThinkPad from Lenovo, the X300. While the two machines are both impressive products, they are different in key respects.</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve been testing the ThinkPad X300 and I have found it to be a solid, innovative laptop that will be perfect for many mobile PC users. It isn&#8217;t as sexy or inexpensive as the MacBook Air, but it has numerous features the Apple lacks, especially a wide array of ports and connectivity options, a built-in DVD drive and a removable battery.</p>
<p>I can recommend the X300 for road warriors without hesitation, provided they can live with its two biggest downsides: a relatively paltry file-storage capacity and a hefty price tag. This ThinkPad starts at $2,476 for a stripped-down model and at $2,799 for a preconfigured retail version with a half-size battery. The configuration I expect to be the most popular, with a full-size battery and DVD drive, is about $3,000.</p>
<p>The key factor in both of these downsides is the solid-state drive, or SSD, which replaces the hard disk. The SSD is fast and rugged, but today it can hold only a cramped 64 gigabytes of files and is very costly. Apple offers a MacBook Air version with the same solid-state drive for a similar high price. But Apple also has a much more affordable $1,799 model with an 80-gigabyte standard hard disk. Lenovo doesn&#8217;t.</p>

<p>The X300, due to go on sale next week at lenovo.com and at a few retailers, isn&#8217;t as thin as the MacBook Air. In fact, at its thinnest point it is almost as thick as the Apple is at its thickest point. And when the new ThinkPad is ordered in what are likely to be its most common configurations, it is heavier than the three-pound Apple and, in fact, fails to make the three-pound cutoff that typically denotes a &#8220;subnotebook.&#8221; Only one configuration breaks that barrier, at 2.93 pounds, and it is the stripped-down model with just a half-size battery and no DVD drive.</p>
<p>But the X300, which will come with either Windows Vista or Windows XP, is still very thin and light. It&#8217;s under an inch thick and even at its heaviest is only 3.5 pounds. Yet, like the Apple, it packs in a widescreen 13.3-inch display and a full-width keyboard.</p>
<p>Plus, Lenovo has used that extra thickness to good advantage. While the MacBook Air&#8217;s extreme thinness makes it gorgeous, it left no room for an Ethernet jack, a removable battery, a built-in DVD drive or a cellphone modem. The X300 has all these things, either standard or as options, plus three USB ports, compared with just one for the Apple. The Lenovo even offers GPS location-finding, the ability to connect to new wireless USB devices and future support for a forthcoming wireless network standard called WiMax.</p>
<p>The ThinkPad has another advantage: Even though its screen is the same size as the Apple&#8217;s, it is higher resolution, so more material can be seen without scrolling. Some people find that higher-resolution screens make text too small to read easily, but I didn&#8217;t experience any such problem on the X300.</p>
<p>In my tests, the X300 performed very well, even though it has a relatively slow processor, slower than the MacBook&#8217;s.</p>
<p>But the ThinkPad&#8217;s battery life was only fair, and was inferior to the Apple&#8217;s. In my tough test, where I turn off all power-saving features, set the screen to maximum brightness, turn on Wi-Fi and run a repeating play list of music, the X300 lasted three hours and five minutes. That was 24 minutes less than the comparable MacBook Air. And this was on the $3,000 configuration with a full-size battery and a DVD drive. The more basic models, with a half-size battery, would last only half as long, according to Lenovo.</p>

<p>In more normal use, the model I tested would likely last under four hours on a charge, and the base models maybe two, compared with about 4.5 hours for the Mac.</p>
<p>I also tested another version of the ThinkPad, which substitutes a second, half-size battery for the DVD drive. It got five hours and 15 minutes, which means you could likely get 6.5 to seven hours in normal usage. That model costs around $2,850.</p>
<p>There are two more factors worth mentioning. I believe that both the Mac operating system and the software that comes with it are superior to the Windows operating system and built-in software offered on the ThinkPad. And the Mac isn&#8217;t susceptible to the vast majority of viruses and spyware, and doesn&#8217;t require third-party security software.</p>
<p>Also, the ThinkPad&#8217;s screen, when opened, stands significantly higher than the Mac&#8217;s, so it is less usable in a coach seat on an airplane when the person in front of you reclines.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re happy with Windows, can afford the price tag, and value the many ports and connectivity options Lenovo has packed in, the thin and rugged X300 is a great choice. It&#8217;s a notable engineering accomplishment.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I&#8217;ve been testing a black-and-silver cellphone featuring a large touch screen populated with an array of colorful icons against a black background. Tapping the icons launches functions like a music player, Web browser and text-messaging program.</p>
<p>That may sound like Apple&#8217;s heavily publicized iPhone, which runs on the AT&amp;T wireless network, but it&#8217;s not. This phone is called the Voyager, and it&#8217;s made by LG and runs on the rival Verizon Wireless network.</p>
<p>Despite their superficial similarities, the two devices are very, very different. In fact, Verizon&#8217;s public-relations people are at pains to say the Voyager isn&#8217;t intended as an &#8220;iPhone killer&#8221; or even a &#8220;smart phone.&#8221;</p>
<p>Still, the Voyager is worth a close look, if only because it is one of the first competitors that attempts to mimic Apple&#8217;s touch interface, and many of its functions overlap the iPhone&#8217;s.</p>
<p>The Voyager beats the iPhone in certain respects. Unlike Apple&#8217;s product, it runs on a fast, 3G data network. And my experience has been that Verizon&#8217;s network has better coverage than AT&amp;T&#8217;s in many cities, especially on the East Coast. It also costs less: $299, after a rebate, with a two-year service contract, compared with $399 for the iPhone.</p>
<p>In addition, the Voyager has GPS and thus provides real-time navigation, a capability the iPhone currently lacks. And the Voyager can even receive live TV programs for an extra monthly fee of $15, though it gets only eight channels and its TV function works only in certain cities.</p>
<p>A big advantage of the Voyager for some people is that it has a physical keyboard for typing in addition to the kind of virtual onscreen keys that are the iPhone&#8217;s only method for entering text. This keyboard is revealed by opening the phone, which then resembles a little laptop with a display that&#8217;s separate from the outside touch screen. I found that typing worked pretty well. For folks who insist on a physical keyboard, this is a big deal.</p>
<p>Finally, LG has enhanced the Voyager&#8217;s touch screen with feedback: When you tap an icon or scroll through a list, you get a light physical sensation.</p>
<p>But the Voyager is bulkier than the sleek iPhone &#8212; about 50% thicker and 40% larger overall &#8212; even though it&#8217;s a tad lighter. And it lacks the iPhone&#8217;s ability to use Wi-Fi hot spots and home networks, which are often faster than Verizon&#8217;s 3G network. It also has only about half the battery life; a smaller, lower-resolution screen, and just a fraction of the Apple&#8217;s internal memory. (Unlike the iPhone, the Voyager lets you add memory cards, but it doesn&#8217;t come with any.)</p>
<p>Most importantly, the Voyager suffers badly in the area where Apple&#8217;s phone shines: software. Whether Verizon considers it a direct iPhone competitor or not, the LG product tries to do many of the same things, and it generally falls short.</p>
<p>This is the true challenge that the iPhone poses to established phone makers like LG. Apple has managed to build into its phone a real PC-grade operating system with a breakthrough user interface and elegant programs, something that has eluded the major cellphone makers.</p>
<p>As with so many of the new feature-packed mobile phones, the Voyager&#8217;s user interface is clumsy and confusing, requiring too many steps to perform simple tasks. And its applications, such as the photo organizer, music player, Web browser and email program, are primitive compared with the iPhone&#8217;s.</p>
<p>In fact, the Voyager, bafflingly, has several different user interfaces &#8212; two on the outer touch screen and an entirely different one on the inner screen above the keyboard that doesn&#8217;t work by touch at all. Some functions work only with the inner screen.</p>
<p>Scrolling through lists with the Voyager&#8217;s touch screen is a halting, frustrating process compared with the smooth, slick scrolling on the iPhone. Its touch functions are old style and basic compared with the new &#8220;multitouch&#8221; approach that Apple built into the iPhone. Unlike the iPhone, the Voyager doesn&#8217;t allow you to &#8220;flick&#8221; through photos or other screens, or to use two fingers to enlarge or shrink photos or Web pages. It also doesn&#8217;t automatically change photos or Web pages from portrait to landscape view by just turning the phone.</p>
<p>In addition, while the Voyager&#8217;s Web browser can show real Web-page layouts, I found it to be far inferior to the iPhone&#8217;s browser, which shows entire pages and then zooms in on the parts you want to read with a couple of finger taps.</p>
<p>Apparently because the Voyager isn&#8217;t considered a business tool or smart phone, its email function isn&#8217;t included on any of the main menus or even located under the envelope icon labeled &#8220;messaging.&#8221; To find it, you have to wade through multiple menus with unhelpful names like &#8220;Tools on the Go.&#8221;</p>
<p>Even doing something as simple as entering flight mode &#8212; which turns off a phone&#8217;s internal radios for use on a plane and takes two steps on the iPhone &#8212; requires five steps on the Voyager.</p>
<p>Verizon is promising to improve the Voyager, but right now it&#8217;s a classic example of how the leading cellphone makers are going to have to step up their games, especially in software, to match Apple&#8217;s upstart device.</p>
