The company will release Windows 7, a faster and much better operating system than the little-loved Windows Vista, which did a lot to harm both the company&#8217;s reputation, and the productivity and blood pressure of its users. PC makers will rush to flood physical and online stores with new computers pre-loaded with Windows 7, and to offer the software to Vista owners who wish to upgrade.</p>

<p>With Windows 7, PC users will at last have a strong, modern successor to the sturdy and familiar, but aged, Windows XP, which is still the most popular version of Windows, despite having come out in 2001. In the high-tech world, an eight-year-old operating system is the equivalent of a 20-year-old car. While XP works well for many people, it is relatively weak in areas such as security, networking and other features more important today than when XP was designed around 1999.</p>
<p>After using pre-release versions of Windows 7 for nine months, and intensively testing the final version for the past month on many different machines, I believe it is the best version of Windows Microsoft (MSFT) has produced. It&#8217;s a boost to productivity and a pleasure to use. Despite a few drawbacks, I can heartily recommend Windows 7 to mainstream consumers.</p>
<p>Like the new Snow Leopard operating system released in August by Microsoft&#8217;s archrival, Apple (AAPL), Windows 7 is much more of an evolutionary than a revolutionary product. Its main goal was to fix the flaws in Vista and to finally give Microsoft customers a reason to move up from XP. But Windows 7 is packed with features and tweaks that make using your computer an easier and more satisfying experience.</p>

<p>Windows 7 introduces real advances in organizing your programs and files, arranging your taskbar and desktop, and quickly viewing and launching the page or document you want, when you want it. It also has cool built-in touch-screen features.</p>
<p>It removes a lot of clutter. And it mostly banishes Vista&#8217;s main flaws—sluggishness; incompatibility with third-party software and hardware; heavy hardware requirements; and constant, annoying security warnings.</p>
<p>I tested Windows 7 on 11 different computers, ranging from tiny netbooks to standard laptops to a couple of big desktops. These included machines from Lenovo, Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), Dell (DELL), Acer, Asus, Toshiba and Sony (SNE). I even successfully ran it on an Apple Macintosh laptop. On some of these machines, Windows 7 was pre-loaded. On others, I had to upgrade from an earlier version of Windows.</p>
<p>In most cases, the installation took 45 minutes or less, and the new operating system worked snappily and well. But, I did encounter some drawbacks and problems. On a couple of these machines, glacial start-up and reboot times reminded me of Vista. And, on a couple of others, after upgrading, key features like the display or touchpad didn&#8217;t work properly. Also, Windows 7 still requires add-on security software that has to be frequently updated. It&#8217;s tedious and painful to upgrade an existing computer from XP to 7, and the variety of editions in which Windows 7 is offered is confusing.</p>
<p>Finally, Microsoft has stripped Windows 7 of familiar built-in applications, such as email, photo organizing, address book, calendar and video-editing programs. These can be downloaded  free of charge, but they no longer come with the operating system, though some PC makers may choose to pre-load them.</p>
<p>In recent years, I, like many other reviewers, have argued that Apple&#8217;s Mac OS X operating system is much better than Windows. That&#8217;s no longer true. I still give the Mac OS a slight edge because it has a much easier and cheaper upgrade path; more built-in software programs; and far less vulnerability to viruses and other malicious software, which are overwhelmingly built to run on Windows.</p>
<p>Now, however, it&#8217;s much more of a toss-up between the two rivals. Windows 7 beats the Mac OS in some areas, such as better previews and navigation right from the taskbar, easier organization of open windows on the desktop and touch-screen capabilities. So Apple will have to scramble now that the gift of a flawed Vista has been replaced with a reliable, elegant version of Windows. </p>
<p>Here are some of the key features of Windows 7.</p>
<p><strong>New Taskbar: </strong>In Windows 7, the familiar taskbar has been reinvented and made taller. Instead of mainly being a place where icons of open windows temporarily appear, it now is a place where you can permanently &#8220;pin&#8221; the icons of frequently used programs anywhere along its length, and in any arrangement you choose. This is a concept borrowed from Apple&#8217;s similar feature, the Dock. But Windows 7 takes the concept further.</p>
<p>For each running program, hovering over its taskbar icon pops up a small preview screen showing a mini-view of that program. This preview idea was in Vista. But, in Windows 7, it has been expanded in several ways. Now, every open window in that program is included separately in the preview. If you mouse over a window in the preview screen, it appears at full size on your desktop and all other windows on the desktop become transparent—part of a feature called Aero Peek. Click on the window and it comes up, ready for use. You can even close windows from these previews, or play media in them.</p>
<p>I found this feature more natural and versatile than a similar feature in Snow Leopard called Dock Expose.</p>
<p>You can also use Aero Peek at any time to see your empty desktop, with open windows reduced to virtual panes of glass. To do this, you just hover over a small rectangle at the right edge of the taskbar.</p>
<p>Taskbar icons also provide Jump Lists—pop-up menus listing frequent actions or recent files used.</p>
<p><strong>Desktop organization: </strong>A feature called Snap allows you to expand windows to full-screen size by just dragging them to the top of the screen, or to half-screen size by dragging them to the left or right edges of the screen. Another called Shake allows you to make all other windows but the one you&#8217;re working on disappear by simply grabbing its title bar with the mouse and shaking it several times.</p>
<p><strong>File organization:</strong> In Windows Explorer, the left-hand column now includes a feature called Libraries. Each library—Documents, Music, Pictures and Videos—consolidates all files of those types regardless of which folder, or even which hard disk, they live in.</p>
<p><strong>Networking: </strong>Windows 7 still isn&#8217;t quite as natural at networking as I find the Mac to be, but it&#8217;s better than Vista. For instance, now you can see all available wireless networks by just clicking on an icon in the taskbar. A new feature called HomeGroups is supposed to let you share files more easily among Windows 7 PCs on your home network. In my tests, it worked, but not consistently, and it required typing in long, arcane passwords.</p>
<p><strong>Touch: </strong>Some of the same kinds of multitouch gestures made popular on the iPhone are now built into Windows 7. But these features won&#8217;t likely become popular for a while because to get the most out of them, a computer needs a special type of touch screen that goes beyond most of the ones existing now. I tested this on one such laptop, a Lenovo, and was able to move windows around, to resize and flip through photos, and more.</p>
<p><strong>Speed: </strong>In my tests, on every machine, Windows 7 ran swiftly and with far fewer of the delays typical in running Vista. All the laptops I tested resumed from sleep quickly and properly, unlike in Vista. Start-up and restart times were also improved. I chose six Windows 7 laptops from different makers to compare with a new MacBook Pro laptop. The Mac still started and restarted faster than most of the Windows 7 PCs. But the speed gap has narrowed considerably, and one of the Lenovos beat the Mac in restart time.</p>
<p><strong>Nagging: </strong>In the name of security, Vista put up nagging warnings about a wide variety of tasks, driving people crazy. In Windows 7, you can now set this system so it nags you only when things are happening that you consider really worth the nag. Also, Microsoft has consolidated most of the alerts from the lower-right system tray into one icon, and they seemed less frequent.</p>
<p><strong>Compatibility: </strong>I tried a wide variety of third-party software and all worked fine on every Windows 7 machine. These included Mozilla Firefox; Adobe (ADBE) Reader; Google&#8217;s (GOOG) Picasa and Chrome; and Apple&#8217;s iTunes and Safari. </p>
<p>I also tested several hardware devices, and, unlike Vista, Windows 7 handled all but one smoothly. These included a networked H-P printer, a Canon (CAJ) camera, an iPod nano, and at least five external flash drives and hard disks. The one failure was a Verizon (VZ) USB cellular modem. Microsoft says you don&#8217;t need external software to run these, but I found it was necessary, and even then had to use a trick I found on the Web to get it to work.</p>
<p><strong>System Requirements: </strong>Nearly all Vista PCs, and newer or beefier XP machines, should be able to run Windows 7 fine. Even the netbooks I tested ran it speedily, especially with the Starter Edition, which lacks some of the powerful graphics effects in the operating system. (Other netbooks will be able to run other editions.) </p>
<p>If you have a standard PC, called a 32-bit PC, you&#8217;ll need at least one gigabyte of memory, 16 gigabytes of free hard-disk space and a graphics system that can support Microsoft technologies called &#8220;DirectX 9 with WDDM 1.0.&#8221; You&#8217;ll also need a processor with a speed of at least one gigahertz. If you have a newer-style 64-bit PC, which can use more memory, you&#8217;ll need at least two gigabytes of memory and 20 gigabytes of free hard disk space. In either case, you should double the minimum memory specification.</p>

<p><strong>Installation, editions and price: </strong>There are four editions of Windows 7 of interest to consumers. One, a limited version called Starter, comes pre-loaded on netbooks. A second, called Professional, is mainly for people who need to tap remotely into company networks (check with your company to see if you need this). A third, called Ultimate, is mainly for techies who want every feature of all other editions. Most average consumers will want Home Premium, which costs $120 for upgrades.</p>
<p>The system for upgrading is complicated, but Vista owners can upgrade to the exactly comparable edition of Windows 7 while keeping all files, settings and programs in place.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, XP owners, the biggest body of Windows users, won&#8217;t be able to do that. They&#8217;ll have to wipe out their hard disks after backing up their files elsewhere, then install Windows 7, then restore their personal files, then re-install all their programs from the original CDs or downloaded installer files. Then, they have to install all the patches and upgrades to those programs from over the years.</p>
<p>Microsoft includes an Easy Transfer wizard to help with this, but it moves only personal files, not programs. This painful XP upgrade process is one of the worst things about Windows 7 and will likely drive many XP owners to either stick with what they&#8217;ve got or wait and buy a new one.</p>
<p>In my tests, both types of installations went OK, though the latter could take a long time.</p>
<p>Bottom line: Windows 7 is a very good, versatile operating system that should help Microsoft bury the memory of Vista and make PC users happy.</p>
<p>Correction: The edition of Microsoft&#8217;s Windows 7 operating system aimed at business users is called Windows 7 Professional. This week&#8217;s Personal Technology column erroneously stated it was named Business.</p>

An array of gadgets is vying to help homeowners cut energy spending. The devices provide real-time information about how much electricity is used across a home in terms that are easy to comprehend: cost per hour.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Curtailing your home electricity use is a bit like losing weight: You already understand the basics, but it’s hard to accomplish without help and motivation. An array of gadgets are vying to serve as electricity personal trainers, monitoring home power use minute by minute, and making you feel guilty about indulgences like blasting the air conditioner.</p>
<p>I have been testing three of these devices, the Power Monitor from Black &#038; Decker Corp. (BDK), the very similar PowerCost Monitor from Blue Line Innovations Inc., and the more-sophisticated The Energy Detective 5000 from Energy Inc. In my tests, the Black &#038; Decker model provided the most effortless electricity-tracking service. At $99.99, it is also the least expensive.</p>
<p>The devices provide real-time data about how much power you’re using across the house in terms that are easy to comprehend: cost per hour and cost per month. Turn on the microwave and watch the cost  jump from 10 cents to 25 cents an hour. Turn off some lights and see the  cost drop a few cents.</p>
<p>The firms say their customers have, over time, seen drops of as much as 20% in power bills by being more mindful of electricity use and making informed purchases.  An independent Oxford University study in 2006 found that people getting direct feedback on their power consumption reduced use 5% to 15%.</p>
<p>After I began monitoring, my most-recent electricity bill dropped $10 from the month before—but that could also be due to my living in a city where air conditioning isn’t a summer necessity. I find myself thinking more about electricity, and even running back into the house to make sure the lights are out.</p>
<p>The monitors sold by Blue Line and Black &#038; Decker are almost identical, because they’re both manufactured by Canada-based Blue Line. The Blue Line model costs $109, is a bit larger, and features a slightly longer range for the wireless signal that transmits power use from your electric meter.</p>
<p>Connecting these two devices to my electric meter was simple. First, loop a metal belt around the glass dome covering the meter. Then align a sensor attached to the belt on top of the glass to read the data collected by your meter. On my old-style meter, the Power Monitor’s sensor keeps track of how fast a dial rotates. The companies say their products work with about 90% of meters in North America.</p>
<p>The sensor you attach to the electric meter wirelessly sends raw data to a digital monitor that is kept inside the house. Before using the monitor, you have to enter data from your electric bill, but finding the right data can be tricky. Black &#038; Decker’s instructions on this are relatively clear, and entering the data into the digital monitor involves a process similar to setting an alarm clock.</p>
<p>The digital monitors, about the size of a large remote control, can sit in one room or travel about the house. A button labeled “tare” on the Black &#038; Decker model helps you calculate how much electricity is being used by any single appliance that you can turn off and on.</p>
<p>The Black &#038; Decker model features a rudimentary display that only reports the aggregate power use for your house at any given time. It can’t go back and show you changes over time. </p>
<p>But the latest model from The Energy Detective, known as TED, connects directly to a house’s power supply for a more-precise read than the Black &#038; Decker. It comes with software that graphs how use patterns change over time. The TED 5000 costs $199.</p>
<p>But installing TED requires turning off your home’s main power line and inserting a sensor into your circuit breaker—a process that the company says should be done “by qualified personnel only.” I sought help from a friend who has a lot of wiring experience, but after several hours, we were unable to make TED work. My issue was likely a decades-old circuit breaker. The company said my configuration is atypical and that problems like this are rare. A colleague has been using TED for several weeks after hiring an electrician to install it. </p>
<p>While TED 5000 offers many more advanced tools for sleuthing your home’s electricity waste than the other models, all of its sophistication won’t necessarily help the average user do much of a better job remembering to turn off the lights. For most of us, the large cost-an-hour sign on the Black &#038; Decker Power Monitor offers the only feedback we really need.</p>
<p>And before buying any of these devices, keep in mind that many utility companies are installing a new generation of so-called “smart” meters, which not only measure real-time power use, but also offer two-way communication with the power company to help cut costs. And Google Inc.’s (GOOG) nonprofit foundation is working with power companies on a free service that connects data about your power use into an online widget.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There&#8217;s a brand-new variant of the Amazon Kindle e-reader, and it&#8217;s available from the online bookseller starting this week.</p>
<p>This alternative Kindle, called the DX, is a super-size version of the popular Kindle 2, which arrived earlier this year. It sports a 9.7-inch screen, some 2.5 times as big as the surface area of the Kindle 2&#8217;s 6-inch display. It also sports a higher price tag &#8212; $489, versus $359 for its smaller sibling, which remains on the market.</p>

<p>Like previous models, the Kindle DX allows you to shop for, and wirelessly download, any e-book in Amazon&#8217;s (AMZN) growing catalog &#8212; now about 275,000 titles. It uses the same easy-on-the-eyes screen technology as the smaller model but at a higher resolution. It still lacks color, and renders images only in gray scale. But the new DX adds a new capability: auto-rotation, which allows you to read in landscape mode.</p>
<p>This new, larger model isn&#8217;t primarily aimed at readers of standard books. It is targeted at three markets: textbooks, newspapers and other periodicals, and business documents in either Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) Word format or Adobe&#8217;s (ADBE) PDF format.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, I&#8217;ve been testing the Kindle DX and I didn&#8217;t like it nearly as much as the Kindle 2, which I own and enjoy using daily. While it performs its promised tasks adequately, I found that its size and weight made it awkward and tiring to hold for long periods of reading. It&#8217;s still fairly thin and light, but it&#8217;s 85% larger and heavier than the standard Kindle.</p>
<p>In addition, Amazon has degraded the user interface. To prevent the device from being even larger, the company had to remove the left-side page-turning buttons, confining all the controls to a vertical strip on the right. The keyboard at the bottom is also more vertically cramped.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re left-handed, you have to spin the device around and rotate the screen to get buttons on the left, where they appear with their labels upside-down.</p>
<p>Similarly, if you choose to read in landscape mode, all the navigation controls, including the joystick for moving the cursor, will be awkwardly placed at either the top or bottom, far from where your hands are holding the device, and the keyboard essentially will be unusable.</p>
<p>In my view, the Kindle DX would have been a better product with on-screen touch controls that could instantly adapt to its size and orientation.</p>
<p>In reading standard books on the DX, I also encountered instances where the text on a page varied in shade from light gray to black.</p>
<p>I had mixed results with business documents. As with previous Kindles, you can either email personal documents to your device, for a fee, or drag them onto the Kindle via a cable, for free. But, unlike the smaller models, the new DX has PDF display capability built in, so it renders PDF files much more accurately than the older Kindles. That is a big improvement. It also allows you to view Excel and PowerPoint files if you save them in PDF format before sending them to your Kindle DX.</p>

<p>I tried a variety of documents, and in many cases the results were great. The text was crisp, and the tables and graphics looked like they should. But I found that on some of these PDF documents, the text was too small to read. Yet, the Kindle lacks the ability to zoom in on PDF documents. You often can make the type larger by rotating to landscape mode, but this splits the PDFs into multiple pages, sometimes breaking them awkwardly.</p>
<p>Also, Amazon has raised its fees for converting and delivering business documents via email to all Kindles. The charge was formerly 10 cents a document. Now, it&#8217;s 15 cents per megabyte, which can add up if you load up your Kindle with lots of large documents. Most of my test documents, which were fairly small, cost over $1 each.</p>
<p>Newspapers looked about the same on the DX as they do on the smaller Kindles. Despite the larger screen, they don&#8217;t use traditional print or Web layouts, but a special Kindle layout that some users like a lot, but which I find annoying because it makes it harder to quickly scan multiple headlines.</p>
<p>The Kindle DX does have some nice touches. For the extra money, you not only get a larger screen, but also about twice the storage capacity. Also, because the screen is wider, you can adjust the margins on the DX, to obtain a line length that&#8217;s comfortable for your eyes and optimal for reading speed.</p>
<p>Amazon claims the same multiday battery life for the DX as for the Kindle 2. In my tests, I was able to go for several days of moderate reading without recharging, and much more if I turned off the wireless capability.</p>
<p>Although I wasn&#8217;t able to test college textbooks, I suspect they may be the killer app for this product. Many already are so expensive and heavy they could make the weight and price of the Kindle DX seem trivial in comparison.</p>
<p>But for standard books, I&#8217;d stick with the smaller, more comfortable Kindle 2.</p>

Cellphone location-sharing service Glympse is simple, useful and a non-creepy way to share your whereabouts when you want someone to know.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There&#8217;s a tendency in the Twitter era for people to share copious details of their lives with online pals. One way to do that is through new mobile-phone services that let people share their physical locations using the tracking technology inside modern cellphones.</p>
<p>While these location-sharing services have some interesting possibilities, they also raise some disturbing implications for privacy &#8212; or maybe it just seems that way if, like me, you&#8217;re over 35 years old. Lately I&#8217;ve been testing a cellphone location-sharing service that I found simple, useful and non-creepy enough that I can imagine people thirtysomething and older using it.</p>

Send a &#8216;Glympse&#8217; to share your location</div>
<p>The free service is called Glympse, from a company of the same name that has designed it to share your location with friends and colleagues in small increments of time &#8212; glimpses, as the name implies, of your whereabouts. Glympse just released a test version of the service as an application for the G1, a phone offered by T-Mobile that runs Google&#8217;s (GOOG) Android operating system.</p>
<p>The company will release versions of Glympse for BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, iPhone and Nokia (NOK) phones in the coming weeks. Users can download the Glympse software onto G1 phones through Android Market, the online clearinghouse for applications for Android phones.</p>
<p>I used Glympse on an iPhone and a G1 and, for comparison, tried out a couple of other location-sharing applications, Google Latitude and Loopt. When you start the Glympse application, it identifies where you are on a map using a combination of location technologies in cellphones, including GPS satellites, Wi-Fi hot spots and phone towers.</p>
<p>Your location isn&#8217;t shared with others until you &#8220;send a Glympse&#8221; to someone. The software allowed me to send a Glympse with my location for selected chunks of time lasting anywhere from zero minutes to four hours. Picking zero minutes shared only my location at the moment of sending, while selecting four hours meant the recipients of my Glympse could track me for that period of time, wherever I went.</p>
<p>The sender of a Glympse can address it by entering a recipient&#8217;s email address, or a mobile-phone number for a text message. Recipients get a message with a link to a map on a Web page. A nice thing about the service is that it doesn&#8217;t require recipients to have the Glympse software, though the experience is richer when they do.</p>
<p>Sending a Glympse can be helpful anytime a friend, family member or colleague is expecting you. You can send a Glympse that lets a friend know you&#8217;re stuck in heavy traffic (although it&#8217;s wise to do that before you&#8217;re on the road to stay safe and, in some states, to avoid breaking the law). Parents can insist that teens send a Glympse when they go out for the evening.</p>
<p>Bryan Trussel, the CEO of Glympse, sent me several Glympses with short messages like &#8220;late lunch meeting&#8221; and &#8220;headed home&#8221; to explain where he was going. On the G1, I could see an icon representing Mr. Trussel moving around a map as he drove through the streets of Redmond, Wash., including his speed. I was also able to see traffic conditions, which would have been helpful if he had been running late. Glympse gave me a similar view of his location through a Web browser running on my PC. On the iPhone, the experience was more static, forcing me to reload a Web page to get a fresh view of Mr. Trussel&#8217;s whereabouts. Glympse says it will fix this so users of the iPhone can watch someone&#8217;s location in real time.</p>
<p>I encountered a bug with the service when I sent a couple Glympses to my own cellphone and that of a colleague &#8212; both BlackBerrys and neither of which had Glympse software. Both Glympses linked to high-level maps suggesting I was somewhere in North America, which wasn&#8217;t very helpful, even if it was technically accurate. The company couldn&#8217;t figure out what the problem was, and it eventually stopped happening for me too.</p>
<p>Once a Glympse expires, the service no longer tracks the sender&#8217;s location. It will show the sender&#8217;s last known location for 48 hours after the Glympse expires. Glympse may some day use your location information to target advertising to you, but the company isn&#8217;t doing that for now.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m far more comfortable with this form of finite location-sharing than the approach used by other services. Google Latitude lets you share your location to only a list of friends. It gives you the option of turning location sharing off or, through a &#8220;city level&#8221; option, it reveals only your general whereabouts. Loopt similarly allows you to set options to show, or hide your location from all or some online friends. A feature called Loopt Mix lists strangers you can send messages to in your general vicinity &#8212; many of whom seemed to be looking for romantic partners in my area.</p>
<p>Despite these controls, I easily forgot I was sharing my location with these two services. This might be fine for someone who enjoys being tracked down by friends during a night out on the town or is diligent about changing privacy settings when they want to go stealth.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m too lazy to manage my privacy so closely though. I don&#8217;t mind giving friends a look at my location, but only if I know the invitation isn&#8217;t open-ended.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I am typing these words in a full-fledged word processor on an Apple iPhone. It&#8217;s a third-party app that allows you to edit, format or create Microsoft Word and Excel documents, and then send them back to a PC or Mac where they can be opened in Word or Excel. Oh, and it has cut, copy and paste in its word processor &#8212; a capability long missing from the iPhone that isn&#8217;t due from Apple (AAPL) itself until this summer.</p>

<p>Devotees of older smart phones, tired of iPhone hype, will be quick to note this is no innovation. Devices like Windows Mobile phones, Palm (PALM) Treos and BlackBerrys have made these abilities available for years. But, for the 37 million iPhone and iPod Touch owners, it&#8217;s potentially a major step forward, closing a hole in a hand-held computing platform that is otherwise more elegant and versatile than any other.</p>
<p>This new app, called Quickoffice, has some nice features. Its cut, copy and paste function is very well designed. It can save files locally on the phone. It has a built-in email function for sending files to others, and it can upload or download files to and from a PC or Mac, or to and from online storage.</p>
<p>But there&#8217;s a catch. While Quickoffice, which is also available on other platforms, did work OK in my tests, it has some major drawbacks that keep me from recommending it right now. The product&#8217;s maker, Quickoffice Inc., acknowledges these and is working to fix them by summer. But, especially because Quickoffice costs $19.99, a Rolls-Royce price in the iPhone&#8217;s app store, you might want to hold off on buying it until the fixes are in place.</p>
<p>In particular, Quickoffice can&#8217;t simply load and edit any Word or Excel file you receive as an email attachment. The company claims this is a built-in iPhone limitation, but it&#8217;s still a big problem for users. Instead, to get files into Quickoffice for editing, you have to transfer them using a Wi-Fi network from your PC or Mac, or from the iDisk online storage feature of Apple&#8217;s MobileMe Web service, which costs $99 a year.</p>
<p>Also, amazingly, Quickoffice shipped without any automatic typo-correcting function or spell checker. For various technical reasons, it couldn&#8217;t even use the one built into the iPhone. So, you have to do a lot of correcting of typos once the file gets onto a computer. For instance, the first words of this column, as originally created in Quickoffice, read: &#8220;I am typing these words in a full-feledged word pricessor &#8230; &#8221; I had to clean them up in Word on my laptop.</p>

<p>And, while you can view a text or spreadsheet file in landscape mode, you can do only limited editing of text documents in this mode, and no editing at all of spreadsheet documents viewed in landscape.</p>
<p>Quickoffice for the iPhone consists of three modules. One is Quickword, the word processor. The second is Quicksheet, the spreadsheet program. These two, also separately available from the app store at $12.99 each, can handle standard Microsoft (MSFT) .doc and . xls files, but not Microsoft&#8217;s newer .docx and .xlsx formats. The third module, called Quickoffice Files, merely transfers and displays files, but doesn&#8217;t allow editing or creating them. It handles a much wider variety of file types, and is sold separately for $1.99.</p>
<p>Cut, copy and paste is implemented nicely. You simply double-tap to select a word or triple-tap to select a paragraph. Small dots appear at either end of the selection, allowing you to expand or contract the selected section of text. Once your selection is done, you can then cut it or copy it, or change its formatting. To cut or copy your selection, you just choose cut or copy from a popup menu. To paste, you tap once elsewhere in the document, and then select Paste from a popup menu. You can paste text copied or cut from one Quickword document into another, but not into any other app on the iPhone. (Apple will add that ability this summer.)</p>
<p>Quickword is the better of the two main modules. It has an impressive suite of features, including the ability to bold or italicize characters, change fonts and colors, create bullet points, and undo or redo changes. All of this formatting was retained correctly when I transferred the files to a computer, and vice versa. Quickword doesn&#8217;t have every feature of Word on a computer, but its feature set is strong.</p>
<p>Quicksheet has 125 functions. It also does formatting of cells well, and has undo and redo. Again, it isn&#8217;t as powerful as Excel, but its capabilities are decent. Unfortunately, unlike in the word processor, I found some problems in Quicksheet. In one simple spreadsheet I imported, it failed to properly display text that stretched across multiple cells, and failed to do a simple recalculation that worked perfectly in Excel. Also, it lacks cut, copy and paste.</p>
<p>Getting documents into the app is a pain. Unless you have a MobileMe account, on either Windows or Mac, you have to type a geeky numerical address into a Web browser and then choose a file from your computer using the browser page that comes up.</p>
<p>Quickoffice is an OK start, but it needs a lot of work.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As newspapers, magazines and TV stations face dire economic challenges, and journalism moves increasingly online, debates are raging about how best to preserve quality news and commentary while still making money.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s lots of experimentation with different approaches. Many journalists, old and new, are operating as stand-alone bloggers, but finding it hard to make a living. Web advertising has weakened with the economy, and often can&#8217;t cover the costs of expensive reporting. A couple of respected traditional publications have successfully attracted large numbers of paid subscribers online, but many others who have tried have failed.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, advertisers also are scrambling to figure out the best way to sell their products online, in a manner that both attracts potential customers and blends in well with the content and style of news sites. And publishers are trying to capture the conversation and sense of community that permeate services like Facebook and Twitter.</p>
<p>This week, a new Web news site is entering the fray, with a novel approach to journalistic entrepreneurship, new forms of advertising, and an effort to blend journalism and social networking.</p>
<p>The site, called True/Slant, at <a href="http://trueslant.com" rel="external">trueslant.com</a>, is opening its doors via an odd preliminary status it calls an &#8220;open alpha.&#8221; This means it&#8217;s rough around the edges, and not yet taking in revenue, but hopes to attract enough participation to hone its design and operation.</p>
<p>True/Slant is run by a former news executive at America Online who worked at a variety of publications, including The Wall Street Journal. It covers a wide range of topics, such as politics, culture, sports, business, health, science and food.</p>
<p>It is launching with 65 journalists, or &#8220;knowledge experts,&#8221; assigned to specific topics. Each of these contributors gets a page to house their journalism and, it is hoped, an active social network of followers who will regularly discuss the articles they read there. Each page also will feature headlines of stories elsewhere on the Web selected by the contributors. These &#8220;headline grabs&#8221; link back to the originating outside site.</p>
<p>The initial group of contributors includes current or former writers for publications such as the Financial Times, Rolling Stone, the New York Times, Time magazine and the Boston Globe.</p>
<p>Readers can go directly to the page of their favorite contributor, but the site&#8217;s home page will knit together popular content and contributors, and each reader will be able to track multiple topics and contributors through a streaming feed called &#8220;I&#8217;m following.&#8221;</p>
<p>True/Slant will run regular Web ads throughout. But, in a highly unusual move, the site plans to offer advertisers their own entire pages where they can run blogs and try to attract a network of followers. These will have the same design and features of the journalists&#8217; pages, but will be labeled as ad content.</p>
<p>The journalists are paid a small amount, but the plan is to turn them into minipublishers under the True/Slant umbrella. They will be offered a share of the advertising and sponsorship revenues their individual pages generate and, in some cases, equity in True/Slant, which is backed by venture capital.</p>
<p>These contributors are allowed to keep writing elsewhere, either online or in traditional media, and even to promote these outside efforts on True/Slant. But they are expected to post original commentary and analysis to True/Slant. They also are allowed to arrange for their own advertising or sponsorships, in addition to what True/Slant can sell, and even, in some cases, to add other authors to their pages.</p>
<p>In another unusual move, the contributors also are required to actively engage with readers on the site. They must post a minimum number of comments in reader discussions about their articles and curate the comments, giving prominence to the most interesting. They are even expected to comment on each other&#8217;s posts.</p>
<p>This required engagement is an attempt to capture some of the excitement of a social network, and it ties in directly with a contributor&#8217;s success. On the home page, and elsewhere throughout the site, True/Slant promotes not only the most popular contributors, but also the most active ones. High rankings in these categories can lead to higher traffic on each contributor&#8217;s page, and, indirectly, to higher income.</p>
<p>Readers who are active commenters can also gain prominence on the site, especially if those comments are popular or called out for special attention. A front-page panel will highlight the most active commenters, and the most called-out comments.</p>
<p>The layout of the site is clean and handsome, a decent effort to meld a news site and a social network. One layout flaw the company hopes to fix: There&#8217;s no easy way to find a list of all topics, only those it considers hot at any moment.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s way too early to know if True/Slant will succeed. For one thing, it is still dependent on advertising, not subscriptions. And ethical questions could arise, because the site&#8217;s operators don&#8217;t edit or preapprove the content, and the model of blended journalism and advertising could prove problematic.</p>
<p>But it&#8217;s another example of how the Web is changing traditional media, and might be worth a look.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Digital-picture frames have started to take off as a way for people to show off their stashes of digital photos in rotating slide shows. A growing number of frames even connect to wireless home networks so they can easily be refreshed with photos stored online and on PCs.</p>
<p>But keeping those types of digital-photo frames up-to-date with new pictures demands more technical skill than many parents and grandparents are likely to have. It requires, for example, rudimentary knowledge of how to configure a home Wi-Fi network or shuttle storage cards between a frame and a digital camera. Still, digital frames are a great way to keep generations in touch with, say, a far-flung child&#8217;s latest ballet recital or a football game.</p>
<p>Just in time for the holidays, the wireless carrier T-Mobile is selling a digital-photo frame that makes it easy to set up and to keep fresh. While I found the Cameo excels in its simplicity, it comes with a number of annoying drawbacks and a pricing model that will limit its appeal. It sells for a reasonable $99.99 in T-Mobile stores, but carries a hefty $9.99 monthly fee.</p>
<p>Still, Cameo is an exciting first edition of a product.</p>
<p>First, its strengths. The picture frame is as easy to operate as a cellphone, containing some of the same technical innards of a wireless handset. And each Cameo has a unique phone number, just like a cellphone, that lets anyone who knows the number to &#8220;dial&#8221; it up &#8212; sending messages containing digital photographs instead of voice calls.</p>
<p>Setting up Cameo is as easy as taking it out of a box, screwing a stick into the back to prop up the frame and plugging it into an electrical outlet. The Cameo has a seven-inch color display and one of the more attractive borders I&#8217;ve seen on a digital photo frame: imitation black leather with white stitching.</p>
<p>Users themselves can manually load images onto the frame from a PC by connecting it through a USB cable or by inserting a miniature storage card from a digital camera.</p>
<p>Cameo can receive pictures wirelessly two ways. The owner of the frame hands out the Cameo&#8217;s phone number to friends and family members, who then send pictures to the frame that were taken with the cameras standard on most modern cellphones. This method uses MMS, or multimedia messaging service, a communications standard normally used to share pictures and other media between cellphones.</p>
<p>Cameo owners also can give out an email address for their picture frames that is based on their Cameo&#8217;s phone number, allowing people to email images that they&#8217;ve downloaded to their computers from digital cameras.</p>
<p>The first time the frame receives a picture from an email address or phone number, Cameo asks the frame owner to push a button on the back of the frame to place the sender on an approved list. After that, all images from the approved source appear automatically on the frame &#8212; a method that at least keeps random people&#8217;s photos from popping up in grandma&#8217;s living room.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s a wonderful unpredictability to how Cameo works. Imagine all of the kids and grandkids in a sprawling family room in different locations being able to send snapshots to each other. This is possible now with photo-sharing sites like Flickr, but those typically require going to a Web site. Images on a Cameo just show up without warning on your kitchen countertop, living room or office desk.</p>
<p>I handed out my Cameo number to some colleagues and was delighted when their cameraphone pictures began trickling into my frame, including a shot of the New York neighborhood in which one of them lives, and an image of another colleague ice skating.</p>
<p>The Cameo&#8217;s screen, featuring 720&#215;480 pixels, isn&#8217;t the highest-resolution digital photo frame on the market, but the pictures looked fine to me. You can do a slide show for any number of images, chose a fade-out or other transition, change the order of the photos and alter the display speed &#8212; holding a single image for up to an hour.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, the frame has a skimpy 64 megabytes of memory, and storage capacity isn&#8217;t expandable. There is enough room for only about 200 photos at maximum size. Once it&#8217;s full, you have to make room by manually deleting photos.</p>
<p>Another problem is that the frame currently is available only to existing T-Mobile cellular subscribers.</p>
<p>By far, the biggest turnoff is the monthly fee for the cellular service that delivers the pictures to the frame. There&#8217;s no limit on how many pictures can be sent to a Cameo under T-Mobile&#8217;s cellular plan, but $120 a year is a steep price.</p>
<p>The carrier says it will consider other pricing options in the future. Until it does, it&#8217;s going to be tough for most people to buy the Cameo, even for a beloved family member.</p>

Recently, it has put a lot of effort into a service that delivers movies digitally over the Internet to subscribers, preparing for a day when getting movies on a physical disc will become outmoded.</p>
<p>People today use the Netflix service on their computers, but Netflix (NFLX) has cut a series of deals with hardware partners to make the service available on TV sets through an array of devices.</p>
<p>Most of these devices were designed to do other things: a videogame console, high-definition Blu-ray disc players, a TiVo (TIVO) digital video recorder. So to see how well the service works on these devices, I&#8217;ve spent the past couple of weeks comparing the Netflix experience on Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) Xbox 360 game console, on LG Electronics&#8217; BD300 Blu-ray disc player and on a set-top box from Roku called the Netflix Player. The last, as the name implies, is designed mainly for Netflix service.</p>

<p>The devices suffer from a relatively skimpy selection of videos on the Netflix Internet service. Netflix has more than 100,000 titles for rent on disc, but about 12,000 titles for viewing through its Internet service at the moment, and there&#8217;s often a months-long delay after a movie&#8217;s release before it shows up online. Television shows generally turn up more quickly, with a handful, like NBC&#8217;s &#8220;Heroes,&#8221; watchable the day after they air.</p>
<p>Still, I find the Netflix service very appealing, especially for catching up on episodes of TV series, such as &#8220;30 Rock,&#8221; that I missed when they aired. Unlike the iTunes Store and other sites that charge users $1.99 per TV episode and $3.99 to rent a movie online, the Netflix Internet service is free to subscribers to its DVD service on one of the company&#8217;s &#8220;unlimited&#8221; rental plans, which start at $8.99 a month.</p>
<p>Depending on how fast your Internet connection is, Netflix videos begin playing almost instantly, though you can&#8217;t keep permanent copies.</p>
<p>Connecting the devices to Netflix through my wired home network was easy in all three cases. I used a wireless home network &#8212; more common in homes than the wired variety &#8212; with the Roku device, the only one of three products that comes with built-in Wi-Fi (it worked well in this mode). People who want to use the Xbox 360 with a wireless network will have to spend $70 or so on an external Wi-Fi adapter. LG recommends people use only a wired home network to connect to Netflix from its player, including adapter kits that cost about $100 for transmitting data over home power lines.</p>
<p>All the devices require you to create a list of movies you want to watch from a computer, just like Netflix subscribers set up &#8220;queues&#8221; of DVDs to be delivered by mail. The Xbox 360 offered by far the most elegant-looking interface for browsing through videos in my Netflix queue, letting me glide through a long row of cover art representing the movies and TV shows I selected on my PC.</p>
<p>In contrast, the Netflix menu on the LG Blu-ray player and Roku device were more static, making it more awkward to navigate the expanse of titles. Netflix became available on the Xbox 360 in November as part of a more sweeping software upgrade, delivered over the Internet, that remade the graphical look of the system.</p>
<p>The quality of most of the videos on Netflix is, to my eyes, about DVD quality, though Netflix is adding some titles in high-definition to its Internet library. HD titles were available for viewing only through the Xbox 360 when I was testing the service. Roku and LG say they will make software updates available online this month that add HD support to their devices.</p>
<p>The Xbox 360 also has some annoying quirks when using it as a movie player &#8212; including a noisy fan I found distracting. The game controller that comes with the Xbox 360 is clunky for playing movies, so users will need to invest in an inexpensive additional remote-control design for media. The Roku and LG players, in contrast, were totally silent and had acceptable remote controls for watching Netflix videos.</p>
<p>I experienced the most serious glitches with the LG Blu-ray player, which occasionally dropped the video signal to my television set as I was watching a movie. LG says the loss of video signal could have been due to the connection I used to hook the player to my TV, though I&#8217;ve never had a problem with other devices using the same connection. The LG Blu-ray player also took the longest of all the devices to install software upgrades from the Internet.</p>
<p>While there are some differences in the Netflix experience on the Roku device, Xbox 360 and LG Blu-ray player, none of them is so great that they should trump other considerations &#8212; like a desire to play videogames or watch HD Blu-ray movies &#8212; in deciding which system is the best fit.</p>
<p>The LG Blu-ray player is available online for about $300. The cheapest Xbox 360 model is $199. (To get Netflix through the Xbox 360, users must be &#8220;gold&#8221; members to the $49.99-a-year Xbox Live game service.) But if what you&#8217;re after is primarily Netflix movies, and you&#8217;ve got room near your TV for another box, the $99.99 Roku product is the best value.</p>

<p>Now, Wi-Fi is making its way into your car. A small California company, Autonet Mobile, has teamed up with Chrysler and others to sell a service that floods any brand or model of car or truck with Wi-Fi Internet connectivity that can be used by multiple passengers and devices simultaneously. It&#8217;s a dealer-installed option on Chrysler vehicles, but Chrysler dealers, and some independent auto electronic shops, will install it on any brand of car for a fee.</p>

<p>The system works via a special wireless router, mounted in the trunk or rear cargo area, that draws Internet connectivity from cellphone towers and then converts it into an in-car Wi-Fi signal with a range of 100 feet. This router looks like a military device, because it is ruggedized to survive jolts and vibrations, and is shielded to avoid interference with the car&#8217;s electronics or with cellphone calls.</p>
<p>As long as they have built-in Wi-Fi, the laptops and smart phones used in the car don&#8217;t need any add-on hardware or software to use Autonet. To them, it looks like any other Wi-Fi signal. And no special car antenna is needed; the router uses its own large antennas.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing Autonet Mobile in a rented Saturn Vue SUV in Washington, D.C., and its suburbs, and found it worked well for most basic Internet tasks like email and Web surfing. The router turns on when the car does, and the Wi-Fi signal shows up about 30 seconds later. However, Autonet is relatively pokey. It&#8217;s too slow to be reliable for streaming video longer than brief YouTube clips, or for smooth video chatting.</p>
<p>Perhaps the biggest downside of in-car Wi-Fi is that it provides one more potential distraction for drivers. The company says the service is only for passengers, not drivers, but there&#8217;s no technical barrier to a driver using it.</p>

<p>Of course, drivers already can court danger this way by using cellphone wireless connectivity on a laptop, iPhone, BlackBerry or other connected device. And that raises another question: Since you can already connect to the Internet from a car with a smart phone or a cellular data card for a laptop, why would you want Autonet?</p>
<p>There are three reasons. First, cellular Internet access is typically tied to a single device at a time. But Autonet&#8217;s Wi-Fi service works just like Wi-Fi in your house: Multiple people with multiple devices can use it at the same time. In fact, the company envisions that the service&#8217;s primary use will be to allow children in the back seat to use laptops for social networking, online games or homework; and multiple adult passengers to conduct online business or research routes and destinations.</p>
<p>Second, the monthly fees can be lower, at least for laptops. A typical cellular data card for a single laptop costs $60 a month. But Autonet&#8217;s service starts at $29 a month for the entire car, regardless of how many devices are being used. A premium plan costs $59. The plans differ by how much data you are allowed to consume monthly. And Autonet requires no special laptop cards or software.</p>
<p>Lastly, the company claims that it has invented a technology that keeps the connection steadier while moving than the typical direct cellular connection. Although some videos froze on me, I never lost Autonet&#8217;s Internet connection, whether moving slowly through downtown D.C. or moving faster on suburban highways and streets.</p>
<p>In my tests, with a laptop and an iPhone, Autonet&#8217;s speeds ranged from around 100 kilobits per second to around 500 kbps &#8212; far slower than a typical cable Internet service in a home. My average speed was between 400 kbps and 450 kbps.</p>
<p>There are some other drawbacks. First, the router costs $499, though that will soon drop to $399 in a holiday price promotion. Second, you have to sign at least a one-year contract, even if you pay monthly. Third, your Internet usage is limited. The $29 plan gets you just 1 gigabyte of data a month, while the $59 plan gets you 5 gigabytes. That should be plenty for most typical users, but not for those with large appetites for data.</p>
<p>These service fees are all-inclusive. You don&#8217;t have to pay anything to any cellphone carrier. But there is also a $35 &#8220;activation fee,&#8221; whose justification is murky, and installation costs are estimated at $50 to $75.</p>
<p>For security, you can set Autonet up with a password, but it doesn&#8217;t yet use the most advanced version of Wi-Fi security. The company says that, while it can track and manage your Internet connection, it cannot determine the content of what you are doing online.</p>
<p>Finally, because the router is hard-mounted, you can&#8217;t remove it for use in, say, a hotel room or second car.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re willing to invest in the router and can tolerate the slow speeds, Autonet might be what you want &#8212; as long as you can resist using it while driving.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Somewhere between the laptop and the smart phone, the computer industry has long believed there could be a small, low-cost device that would please consumers and sell well.</p>
<p>The device would be more versatile than, say, an iPhone, but much cheaper and more portable than, say, a ThinkPad. The trouble is, every attempt to create such a category of computer has met with failure &#8212; until now.</p>
<p>This year, that in-between type of computer now called a &#8220;netbook&#8221; has finally caught on. Since I reviewed a pioneering model, the 7-inch, $300 Asus Eee PC back in January, the market has been flooded with new and better, if somewhat more expensive, netbook models. Nearly every company &#8212; from big names such as <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=dell'>Dell</a> and <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=hpq'>Hewlett-Packard</a>, to obscure ones like MSI &#8212; has jumped into the fray.</p>

<p>Netbooks still constitute a smaller niche than laptops and the exploding smart phone, or hand-held computer, category. But they are threatening to break into the mainstream in a big way, especially in an economic climate where a low price and fewer bells and whistles are suddenly more attractive.</p>
<p>They are much more portable than most standard laptops. They are easier to use on a plane or carry around town. And they are way cheaper, between $300 and $500, than the very lightest, thinnest standard laptops, which often top $1,000.</p>
<p>Compared with even an amazingly powerful pocket device, like the iPhone, the Google (GOOG) G1, or the forthcoming BlackBerry Storm, a netbook, at about twice the price, offers a much larger keyboard and screen. And they can run far more sophisticated software and perform a much wider variety of computing tasks.</p>
<p>But netbooks come with serious compromises. While they are great for light use on the go, their cramped screens and keyboards, and slow processors, make them much less potent and less comfortable to use than even a so-called ultraportable laptop. And, as small as they are, they can&#8217;t fit in a pocket like smart phones can, be as easily used as a still camera, or function as a cellphone.</p>
<p>Netbooks aren&#8217;t tablets. They look and act like regular clamshell-style laptops with keyboards and track pads, but are much smaller. Most current models have 8.9-inch screens, though some now sport 10-inch displays. Dell (DELL) is even planning soon to launch a netbook with a 12-inch screen for around $600, which will blur the line with traditional laptops, some of which can be bought for less with larger displays.</p>
<p>Compared with sleek, thin, but much costlier notebooks, such as the Apple (AAPL) MacBook Air or the Lenovo ThinkPad X300, the netbooks of today are stubbier and chunkier. But they take up much less room on an airline tray table. When the person in front of you reclines, you can happily keep using them, because their screens are so much smaller and extend upward so much less.</p>
<p>The early netbook models relied on the unfamiliar and somewhat geeky Linux operating system, and most still offer it as an option. But many now also can be purchased with Windows XP, with which consumers are far more experienced, and which can run many more well-known programs.</p>
<p>At the start of this year, most netbooks lacked hard disks, instead offering very limited storage via memory chips &#8212; often less storage than a $199 iPhone. They were pitched as limited devices mainly meant for using the Internet &#8212; thus the name &#8220;netbook&#8221; &#8212; and their makers assumed users mainly would use Web-based applications.</p>
<p>Now, many offer decent-size hard disks and include serious programs, such as Microsoft (MSFT) Office or Microsoft Works. But none offers a built-in DVD drive, which makes it hard to install some new software.</p>
<p>To offer readers a feel for today&#8217;s netbooks, I selected four representative models to test and review. I am not declaring these four as the best on the market, nor do I mean to slight makers like H-P, whose entries aren&#8217;t included in this review. The truth is, there are far more similarities than differences among competing netbooks that might make one model stand out from the others.</p>
<p>All four of the models I tested use Intel&#8217;s new low-power Atom processor. All have decent screen resolution &#8212; much better than the original Asus. But none can display a full Web page, or even most of a Web page, without scrolling. Each has three USB ports.</p>
<p>Three of the four have good battery life, but getting good power in most models means using a larger battery that adds weight and bulk.</p>
<p>All of my test models ran XP, not Linux, because I believe that&#8217;s the better choice for average consumers.</p>
<p>Here are minireviews of these four netbooks.</p>
<p><strong>Acer Aspire One:</strong> The $349 blue Acer One weighs a little over two pounds with its standard battery, and has a bright, sharp 8.9-inch screen. It comes with a 120-gigabyte hard disk and 1 gigabyte of memory. It&#8217;s a little over an inch thick, and its footprint is much smaller than that of a standard sheet of paper.</p>
<p>As on all the other models, I tried a word processor, either Microsoft Word or Works, and several popular non-Microsoft programs: Adobe Reader, Apple&#8217;s iTunes and Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox browser. The Acer handled all of them well, though, as with all the other netbooks I tried, its speakers are mediocre.</p>
<p>The Acer&#8217;s small keyboard is very nicely done. Its keys are large enough, and separated and sculpted enough, to make typing comfortable and accurate, though I wouldn&#8217;t want to write a novel on it.</p>
<p>But the Acer has two big drawbacks. Its battery life is miserable. On my tough battery test, where I turn off all power-saving features, crank up the screen brightness, turn on the Wi-Fi, and play a continuous loop of music, it couldn&#8217;t even squeeze out two hours. In normal use, that might mean 2&frac12; hours. To fix that problem, you can spend $50 more on a version with a double-size battery, at the cost of added weight and bulk. This costlier version also boosts the hard disk to 160 gigabytes.</p>
<p>The other problem, which can&#8217;t be fixed with any factory options, is that the Acer One has a terrible track pad. It&#8217;s too cramped vertically for comfortable use, and the buttons, which are mere slivers, are arranged on the sides instead of below the pad. Moving the cursor or selecting text is awkward and inaccurate.</p>
<p>Lesser problems are that the Acer includes only the older, slower, &#8220;G&#8221; flavor of Wi-Fi and a low-resolution Webcam.</p>

<p><strong>Dell Mini 9:</strong> Like the less costly Acer, the $399 Dell Mini has an 8.9-inch screen, but it&#8217;s a bit narrower horizontally. Its standard battery is larger, making it slightly heavier but still very light.</p>
<p>The Dell is a throwback to the older concept of netbooks. It lacks a hard disk and offers just 8 gigabytes of flash memory, plus 2 gigabytes of free online storage. It has just half a gigabyte of memory. For extra money, you can double the flash storage and memory.</p>
<p>Because of its bigger battery, and its lack of a power-sucking hard disk, the Dell beat the Acer handily in my battery test, getting just under three hours, which means that, in normal use, you would likely see four hours.</p>
<p>The Dell has the same wimpy Wi-Fi and Webcam as the Acer. But its track pad, while small, is much larger vertically and easier to use, with buttons where you expect to find them. It ran all my test software OK.</p>
<p>However, the Dell had by far the worst keyboard in my test group. Because of its compact width, the tab, arrow and other keys are squeezed to a ridiculously narrow size that impedes typing.</p>
<p><strong>MSI Wind U100:</strong> This is a $399 machine (after a recent price cut) with a 10-inch screen, and comes from a Taiwan company better known in the U.S. for making computer components than entire computers. The model I tested, with a double-size battery, is $429. My test unit was white, weighed a tad over three pounds, and had 1 gigabyte of memory and a 160-gigabyte hard disk.</p>
<p>Despite the larger screen, the Wind still fits very well on a cramped airline tray, and it has a well-designed keyboard. It comes with a button that can slow down or speed up the processor to save battery life or add oomph. And there&#8217;s a function that can magnify portions of text.</p>
<p>It has a standard, decent Webcam and can use the newest &#8220;N&#8221; flavor of Wi-Fi. It ran all my test software just fine.</p>
<p>With my test model&#8217;s bigger battery, which protrudes from the bottom, the Wind did very well on my test at its standard processor speed, lasting three hours and 37 minutes. That suggests you could get four to five hours in normal use. Presumably, the standard model with the smaller battery would get half of that life, though you could stretch it by stepping down the processor speed.</p>
<p>Overall, I liked the MSI Wind a lot. My only real gripe is that the track pad is small and has only a single thin button, which performs a left or right click. This button is too small and sluggish for optimal use.</p>
<p><strong>Asus Eee 1000H:</strong> Asus, another Taiwan company known as a component maker, is the king of netbooks. In fact, it has so many different, and frequently changing, netbook models that its product lineup can be a blur. The one I tested has a 10-inch screen and costs $475, making it the costliest netbook in this group. It&#8217;s also the heaviest, edging out my test Wind slightly.</p>
<p>Like the Wind, my Eee 1000H had a large battery that protruded from the bottom. It doesn&#8217;t come with a smaller battery. Also like the Wind, it has a standard Webcam, the faster &#8220;N&#8221; Wi-Fi, and a 160-gigabyte hard disk with 1 gigabyte of memory.</p>
<p>The keyboard on the 1000H was the best of this lot, with well-designed keys. It also had the roomiest and most functional track pad, though its buttons &#8212; integrated with a metal border around the track pad &#8212; took some getting used to.</p>
<p>The Asus, like the Wind, has the capability to tweak the speed of its processor. It also has a button that can change the screen resolution, though I found that the nonstandard resolutions looked distorted.</p>
<p>In my battery test, at its standard processor speed, the 1000H got three hours and 32 minutes, suggesting that in normal use it could deliver between four and five hours &#8212; more if you use the lower processor speed.</p>
<p>The Asus handled all my test software well. It comes with a greater variety of built-in programs than the others and offers 20 gigabytes of free online storage.</p>
<p><strong>Bottom line:</strong> If you want a machine for light use, a light price and a light weight, a netbook is waiting and is worth a try. Just don&#8217;t expect the same experience as on a standard laptop or the convenience of a smart phone.</p>
