			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>With its new Leopard operating system, <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=AAPL'>Apple</a> tried to solve one of the most nagging problems faced by home-computer users: how to regularly back up their computers completely and painlessly. Leopard includes a feature called Time Machine that automatically and continuously backs up a Macintosh computer&#8217;s entire hard disk, without requiring the user to do any tedious setup or have any technical knowledge.</p>
<p>Time Machine is a key selling point for Leopard and the Mac. It is more complete, and yet simpler, than the built-in backup feature in Vista Home Premium, the most popular home version of Windows.</p>

<p>But Time Machine has a major drawback: It works much better on desktop Macs than on laptop models. That&#8217;s because it&#8217;s primarily designed to operate with backup hard drives you connect directly to the computer. And it&#8217;s a pain to plug a backup drive into a laptop, which can move around the house. While Time Machine will work with a remote hard disk under certain circumstances, that option requires a second Mac running Leopard, a costly condition.</p>
<p>Now, Apple (AAPL) has attempted to fix the problem with an unusual new companion product called Time Capsule. This is a $299 stand-alone networked gadget that packs both a giant hard disk and a speedy Wi-Fi wireless router into one slender case. It just plugs into your existing home network, and any laptop within wireless range can connect to it. It can back up multiple computers.</p>
<p>Time Capsule is designed to seamlessly work with Leopard&#8217;s Time Machine. But it can also be used as a wireless Internet connection, and/or a remote hard drive, for manually storing and retrieving files by Windows PCs running either Vista or Windows XP, or by Macs running Apple&#8217;s older Tiger operating system. And you can also use it with certain other backup programs, such as the ones built into Windows XP or Tiger.</p>
<p>In my tests over the past week, Time Capsule worked well in all of these scenarios. However, Time Capsule isn&#8217;t meant to do as many different tasks as some other networked drives.</p>
<p>Apple stresses that Time Capsule is a limited, targeted device meant primarily for backup &#8212; especially with Time Machine &#8212; and as a wireless base station. Unlike some other networked storage devices, like Hewlett-Packard&#8217;s MediaSmart home server, Time Capsule doesn&#8217;t allow users to simultaneously stream music or videos to multiple PCs, to easily access its contents via the Web or to stream videos to TV sets.</p>
<p>The $299 Time Capsule model comes with a 500 gigabyte hard disk inside, and there&#8217;s also a $499 model with hard disk that can hold one terabyte of data, or roughly 1,000 gigabytes. Both models use the same &#8220;n&#8221; class of Wi-Fi, the fastest version with the longest range. Both also work with computers equipped with the older &#8220;g&#8221; and &#8220;b&#8221; versions of Wi-Fi.</p>
<p>You can buy networked hard disks in these sizes for less money and simply use them with your existing Wi-Fi router. However, Time Machine won&#8217;t work with them, according to Apple. The company says the only standalone networked hard disk Time Machine can use is Time Capsule.</p>
<p>In my tests, Time Capsule performed perfectly with Time Machine. It also was easily recognized by several of my Windows machines running Vista and Windows XP. On all of these machines, I was able to speedily access the Internet via Time Capsule. Time Capsule can be set up to either replace or supplement your existing Wi-Fi router.</p>
<p>All the machines, even the Windows ones, also could recognize the Time Capsule as a remote hard disk, and save files to it and retrieve files from it. For instance, I manually copied a song, a photo and a Word document from a Mac laptop running Leopard onto the Time Capsule. On a Dell running Vista, I then opened the Time Capsule and launched that same Word document in the Windows version of Word, opened the photo in Vista&#8217;s Photo Gallery program, and played the song in Windows Media Player. This same process worked in reverse.</p>
<p>Apple doesn&#8217;t guarantee that Time Capsule will work with all backup programs. But it says it will work with the backup software built into Tiger and will likely work with some other backup software.</p>
<p>In my tests, the built-in backup program in Windows XP Pro worked fine with Time Capsule. But the built-in backup program in Vista failed. Microsoft said the problem I encountered was due to a new Vista security feature for backups that foils some remote hard disks, not just Apple&#8217;s.</p>
<p>Setting up Time Capsule was easy, using a step-by-step utility program that Apple supplies in both Mac and Windows versions. The device has a USB port that can be used to add either an additional hard disk or a networked printer. And it can be connected to a network via a wired connection if you don&#8217;t want to use its wireless functionality.</p>
<p>If you use Time Machine on a Mac laptop, then Time Capsule&#8217;s $299 price is money well spent. If you don&#8217;t, there are cheaper or more versatile solutions to the backup problem.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Our love affair with entertainment gadgets has caused an unfortunate epidemic of remote controls. In my own house, there&#8217;s a wicker basket on a coffee table with a jumble of remotes for a television set, a high-definition television tuner, a home-theater receiver and a couple of videogame consoles. And when that basket became flooded, I added yet another device to contain the clutter.</p>
<p>There are &#8220;universal&#8221; remotes that are designed to let you operate multiple electronics devices from a single control. But most universal remotes, if you can figure out how to work them at all, don&#8217;t help much with the tedious sequence of button pushes often required to do simple tasks, like watch a movie. In my case, just turning on the TV can require up to six punches on two different remotes, depending on what activity I happened to be doing on my home-theater system the last time I shut it off.</p>
<p><a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=logi'>Logitech International</a>, the Swiss computer-accessory maker, has come up with an answer to the problems of remote-control clutter and excessive button-pushing with its family of Harmony universal remote controls that are relatively affordable and easy to use.</p>

<p>I tested two of the latest models of Logitech remotes, the Harmony 890 and 1000, and found that they greatly simplified using my home-theater system, despite a few flaws.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a challenge just getting many universal remotes working, considering all of the electronics gear that occupy many TV rooms. The setup usually involves punching arcane codes into a universal remote corresponding to your electronics devices after looking the numbers up in a manual &#8212; a tedious process with lots of opportunity for failure.</p>
<p>Users configure Harmony remotes through what I found to be a far more user-friendly process: by tethering them to a Mac or Windows PC with a USB cable. A software program that comes with the remotes asks users what types of devices they&#8217;d like to set up, such as a home-theater receiver, a television set and a digital video recorder. Users will need the model number for their devices.</p>

<p>Once you&#8217;ve entered the model numbers into the Harmony program, the software automatically downloads all of the commands required to configure the remote so it works with your TV-room gadgets from an online Logitech database containing more than 200,000 devices &#8212; far more than you&#8217;d find listed in the manual for a conventionally programmed universal remote control. The Harmony software easily located all of my devices in its database.</p>
<p>An important feature of the Harmony remotes is something called activities, which lets users reduce to one the multiple button pushes typically required to do basic functions with their entertainment systems, such as watching a DVD. Logitech didn&#8217;t invent this concept, but it has made the setup process easy enough so users don&#8217;t have to hire a professional installer to do it for them, as is the case with many other high-end universal remote controls.</p>
<p>Based on the types of devices I told it I had, the Harmony software on the PC recommended a handful of activities for my remote controls, including &#8220;Watch TV,&#8221; &#8220;Watch a DVD,&#8221; and &#8220;Listen to CDs.&#8221;</p>
<p>To watch a DVD on my entertainment system, I normally need to turn on my TV and set it to the correct video input source, turn on my home theater receiver (which I use to play audio when watching movies) and turn on my Xbox 360 game console (through which I play DVDs) &#8212; a process that requires up to seven button pushes on multiple remote controls.</p>
<p>The Harmony remotes eventually allowed me to push one button to turn on all of these devices, but there were hiccups. When I hit the &#8220;Watch DVD&#8221; activity button, the Harmony remotes initially turned on all of my devices except the Xbox 360. After a few minutes exploring the Harmony software on the PC, I was able to change a setting to correct the problem and update the remote.</p>
<p>In all, it took me about 30 minutes to configure the first Logitech remote I used, the Harmony 1000, and half that time for the Harmony 890, after I had become familiar with the process.</p>
<p>The two models of remotes offered similar functions but in radically different industrial designs. The Harmony 1000 is a tablet-shape control about the size of a small picture frame, with a large touch-sensitive color screen that displays large buttons for accessing activities and other functions on your devices. The Harmony 890 is a more conventional wand-shape remote with a smaller screen.</p>
<p>I preferred the design of the Harmony 890, finding it easier and more natural to use with one hand, not to mention a better value. I have found the Harmony 1000 selling for as low as $272 and the Harmony 890 for $222 on Amazon.com. The 890 comes with a kit that lets you extend the range of the remote by using radio frequency, instead of infrared, signals.</p>
<p>Both Harmony remotes, though, made it much easier for me to use my entertainment system and cleaned up some of the clutter in my living room.</p>

<p><a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=dell'>Dell</a> has been having a tough time lately. Once the widely admired leader among PC makers, it has lost its sales crown to <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=hpq'>Hewlett-Packard</a> and has seen its once-legendary customer satisfaction plunge.</p>
<p>In an attempt to jazz up its image, the stodgy behemoth recently introduced a line of thin, sleek, colorful consumer notebooks, the XPS M1330 series, but has been unable to build the machines on schedule.</p>
<p>Now, Dell is making another interesting move to better address the market. It has introduced a new sub-brand of computers intended for perhaps the most poorly served segment of computer buyers: really small businesses with 25 employees or less that have no full-time IT departments.</p>

<p>The new Dell line for these very small businesses is called Vostro. It fits into a new Dell brand lineup. All Dell&#8217;s consumer models, both laptop and desktop, are called Inspirons, a name formerly reserved only for laptops. Big business models are still called Latitude, Optiplex or Precison. High-performance consumer models are called XPS.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing a midrange Vostro model, a laptop with a 15.4-inch screen called the Vostro 1500. It&#8217;s a bulky, plain machine with nothing built in that Dell doesn&#8217;t already offer on consumer models, and some omissions that could make for extra setup work for small businesses. But it is fairly affordable and, to Dell&#8217;s credit, it comes without the useless trial software Dell and others cram onto consumer PCs.</p>
<p>Judged by its hardware and software, the Vostro 1500 is mostly a branding-and-marketing ploy at the moment. Dell concedes the new line is &#8220;just a first step&#8221; in what it swears will be a major initiative to serve very small businesses.</p>
<p>The only real small-business innovation lies outside the product itself: a dedicated phone support staff that Dell says has been trained specifically to serve these small companies. But unless you pay extra, you&#8217;ll still be dealing with support people based outside the U.S. &#8212; in Canada and in the Philippines, far from Dell&#8217;s Texas headquarters. Only time will tell if these folks can really provide better-than-usual service.</p>
<p>The Vostro 1500 starts at just $549, but that base model has very little memory and a small hard disk. The configuration Dell lent me for testing, with a decent two gigabytes of memory and a 160-gigabyte hard disk, plus an extra-large battery and a built-in Sprint cellular modem, costs $1,701. Dell says it&#8217;s available today at a promotional price of $1,327. The optional Sprint service requires a monthly fee, usually $60.</p>
<p>There are three other Vostro laptop models, including a very basic design called the Vostro 1000 that starts at just $449. Dell also offers Vostro desktops.</p>
<p>The Vostro 1500 I tested came with Windows XP instead of Windows Vista. Most Vostro models can be ordered with XP, which may be a welcome choice for small businesses that don&#8217;t want to wrestle with the continuing lack of compatible software and hardware for Vista.</p>
<p>Dell touts several features that it builds into the Vostro machines. One is a network setup program called Network Assistant. Another is PC Tuneup, which is maintenance software. A third is an online backup service that stores up to 10 gigabytes of data.</p>
<p>These are all useful, but none is new or tailored to small businesses. All were already available for Dell&#8217;s consumer models, albeit for small fees. Even the choice of Windows XP and the option to order a computer without any trial software have been available on some Dell consumer models.</p>
<p>Still, there were some surprising omissions on the Vostro that I tested. There was no security software, not even the usual 90-day subscription. Dell notes that you can opt to get the 90-day subscription free of charge and buy a 15-month security package for $79. It figures that many small businesses might already have access to security software. But because this is a necessity, installing it after the fact could be a hassle.</p>
<p>The Vostros with XP, like my test unit, also lack a modern, secure Web browser. They come with the old, insecure Internet Explorer 6.0 instead of Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox or Microsoft&#8217;s much safer Internet Explorer 7.0. A small business buying a Vostro with XP would have to immediately replace the browser.</p>
<p>And the Vostro doesn&#8217;t come bundled with any small-business software.</p>
<p>In my tests, the Vostro 1500 performed just fine, running quickly and easily connecting to my Wi-Fi network. But it&#8217;s a heavy, thick box that would be a burden for travelers. My configuration tipped the scales at seven pounds.</p>
<p>Yet, the battery life was only fair for such a bulky laptop, even with the extra-large battery. In my harsh battery test, where I turn off all power-saving software and play a loop of music, the Vostro 1500 lasted three hours and 36 minutes, meaning you&#8217;d likely get five hours, at most, in normal use. The standard battery would get you about a third less power.</p>
<p>Overall, the Vostro 1500 is just an OK laptop, which isn&#8217;t different enough from consumer models to really earn the small-business designation it claims.</p>

		<title>Using Even New PCs Is Ruined by a Tangle of Trial Programs, Ads</title>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When you buy a gleaming, new personal computer, the first thing you want to do is to try out its cool new features and make it your own. You want to savor how quickly it starts up and runs, and arrange the desktop icons to suit your tastes and habits.</p>
<p>But as I rediscovered recently, often what you&#8217;re forced to do instead is to spend hours as a digital maintenance man wading through annoying and confusing chores.</p>
<p>I have set up many computers over the years, so I wasn&#8217;t shocked that the out-of-box experience was less than ideal. Still, I was struck by just how irritating it was to get going with the new Sony Vaio SZ laptop I bought about 10 days ago. It was the first new Windows machine I&#8217;d bought in a few years, because I had been waiting for Microsoft&#8217;s new Windows Vista operating system. I was amazed that the initial experience is still a big hassle.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m not even referring to the most time-consuming setup processes &#8212; transferring all your files and settings, reinstalling your favorite programs and learning the new features. Vista has actually made moving files and settings easier, and it isn&#8217;t different enough from Windows XP to make for a steep learning curve.</p>

<p>Instead, I&#8217;m talking about two main problems. One is the plethora of teaser software and advertisements for products that must be cleared and uninstalled to make way for your own stuff. The second is the confusing welter of security programs you have to master and update, even on a virgin machine.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m also referring to how slowly a new Windows Vista machine starts and restarts, even if you haven&#8217;t yet loaded or launched any of your own software.</p>
<p>I am not singling out Sony here. I would have had a similar experience if I had chosen, say, a Hewlett-Packard laptop. Most major PC makers feature the security programs and trial software and offers I encountered on my new Sony. They are not part of Vista itself.</p>
<p>The problem is a lack of respect for the consumer. The manufacturers don&#8217;t act as if the computer belongs to you. They act as if it is a billboard for restricted trial versions of software and ads for Web sites and services that they can sell to third-party companies who want you to buy these products.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m distinguishing these programs, sometimes called &#8220;craplets,&#8221; from the full-featured, built-in Sony software meant to enhance the computer, or from entire, useful programs Microsoft builds into Windows, such as music and photo organizers.</p>
<p>On my new Sony, there were two dozen trial programs and free offers. The desktop alone contained four icons representing come-ons for various America Online services, and two for Microsoft. The start menu and program menu had more items that I neither chose nor wanted. Napster, a music service I don&#8217;t use, was lodged at the lower right of the screen.</p>
<p>The worst was a desktop icon called &#8220;Watch Hit Movies Now!&#8221; This turned out to be four full-length films from Sony&#8217;s movie studios, which the company had preloaded onto my computer at the cost of more than four gigabytes of precious hard-disk space. But they aren&#8217;t a gift. If you want to play them, you have to pay Sony.</p>
<p>Then there was the security-software mess. I signed up for a 60-day free trial of Symantec software that Sony offered. This required multiple rounds of scary warnings, scans and updates &#8212; on the first day of using a new machine. Plus, when I tried to use a feature that stopped some unwanted programs from loading, I was forced to launch a second, somewhat redundant, security program from Microsoft.</p>
<p>On top of this, Sony informed me it had 21 different software updates available for my brand new laptop.</p>
<p>I also was shocked at how long this machine took to restart and to do a cold start after being completely shut down. Restarting took over three minutes, and a cold start took more than two minutes. That suggests the computer is loading a bunch of stuff I neither know about nor want. By contrast, a brand new Apple MacBook laptop, under the same test conditions, restarted in 34 seconds and did a cold start in 29 seconds.</p>
<p>I asked Sony about all this, and the company, while acknowledging it is paid to bundle the trial programs, said the programs are carefully selected and &#8220;provide benefits to many consumers,&#8221; up to 30% of whom act on the offers. Sony said the preloaded movies are &#8220;a key differentiator for our products in the marketplace, which we have found that many VAIO customers greatly appreciate.&#8221;</p>
<p>Sony also said the boot-up times I recorded are &#8220;not at all uncommon with Vista-loaded PCs&#8221; and are faster than on some competing computer brands. It defended the 21 updates on the grounds that Vista is so new that, in many cases, compatible software wasn&#8217;t available when the computer shipped.</p>
<p>Still, I wish computer makers would stop loading all these trial programs and offers on computers and that security precautions could be much less disruptive and more automatic. The first day of owning an expensive new gadget should be a pleasure, not a hassle.</p>
