			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Now that both Microsoft and Apple have finally shipped the new versions of their operating systems, <a href="http://ptech.allthingsd.com/20091007/a-windows-to-help-you-forget/">Windows 7</a> and <a href="http://ptech.allthingsd.com/20090826/apple-changes-leopards-spots/">Snow Leopard</a>, respectively, it&#8217;s time for my annual fall computer-buying guide.</p>
<p>This guide stresses laptops, which have become the prevalent choice, but most of its specs also apply to desktops. As always, it is aimed at average consumers doing typical tasks, such as Web surfing, email, social networking, word processing, photos, video and music. It doesn&#8217;t apply to businesses, hard-core gamers or serious media producers—groups that need specialized or heftier hardware.</p>

<p>Consumers shopping for new computers this fall have a wide variety of choices with the new operating systems pre-installed, making the machines faster and better. Windows PCs are no longer burdened with the disliked Vista OS.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s the good news. The bad news is that the Windows hardware makers and retailers generally are trying to nudge you to spend more. They are anxious to guide consumers away from the popular, but low-profit, stripped-down netbooks to somewhat larger Windows 7 laptops from which they can make more money. This larger-size category goes by a variety of names, which can be confusing.</p>
<p><strong>Windows vs. Mac: </strong>The arrival of Windows 7 makes PCs from Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), Dell (DELL) and others much better choices than their Vista-equipped predecessors were. Microsoft (MSFT) has closed most of the gap with Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) Mac OS X operating system. Also, Windows PCs are often priced hundreds of dollars lower than Macs, and offer many more choices.</p>
<p>But Apple&#8217;s hardware is stylish and sturdy, and, in my tests, Macs usually boot faster than Windows machines. Plus, Apple&#8217;s chain of retail stores offers a better buying experience and strong post-purchase support. Also, in my view, Apple&#8217;s built-in software still has the edge. Snow Leopard is fast and reliable. And it comes with a full suite of excellent built-in programs, including email, photo and video software. Microsoft has stripped Windows 7 of such programs. Some PC makers have restored some or all of these in certain models, although I consider Apple&#8217;s counterparts better. Another huge plus: The Mac isn&#8217;t susceptible to the vast majority of viruses and spyware.</p>
<p><strong>Cost: </strong>Prices on Windows PCs are creeping upward. You can buy a Windows PC for under $500, but many stores are pushing costlier models. And those $250 netbooks are much scarcer. Now, they typically run between $300 and $450. Apple has mostly stuck with its same, higher, prices, though it has boosted the specs on many models. The cheapest Mac desktop, the minimalist Mac mini, is $599. The cheapest Mac laptop, the new MacBook, is $999. The heart of Apple&#8217;s line starts at $1,199.</p>
<p><strong>New category:</strong> Windows PC makers this season are pushing a category of laptop that is meant to fit between a netbook and a full-size laptop. It goes by a variety of confusing names, such as &#8220;ultrathin&#8221; or &#8220;thin and light,&#8221; though these models are often no thinner or lighter than some laptops of the past. They typically cost between $500 and $800, and often have 13-inch  screens.</p>
<p><strong>Memory: </strong>All Macs come with at least two gigabytes of memory, which is plenty for running Snow Leopard well. Mainstream Windows PCs have at least three gigabytes. But the cheapest Windows machines sometimes come with less. I recommend at least two gigabytes.</p>
<p><strong>64-bit: </strong>PCs have long been based on something called a 32-bit architecture, but many models now use a 64-bit architecture, allowing properly written software to use more memory and run faster. If possible, buy a 64-bit computer, which is likely to dominate eventually, even though some software and add-on hardware may be incompatible at first.</p>
<p><strong>Graphics: </strong>The new operating systems allow software makers to speed up some tasks by offloading them from the main processor onto the graphics chip. So, if possible, get a &#8220;discrete&#8221; graphics processor, which has its own memory. Otherwise, find a potent &#8220;integrated&#8221; graphics chip, which shares your main memory.</p>
<p><strong>Processor: </strong>Mainstream Windows PCs sport fast, dual-core processors from Intel (INTC) or its rival, AMD (AMD). These pack the equivalent of two brains onto one chip. But many lower-price Windows PCs have slower processors, such as the Intel Atom, which are best suited for light duty. Apple models all use Intel&#8217;s dual-core processors, except for the highest-priced desktops, which come with quad-core chips.</p>
<p><strong>Hard disks:</strong> A 250-gigabyte hard disk should be the minimum on most PCs. On a netbook, look for at least a 160-gigabyte disk. Solid-state disks are faster and use less battery power, but often add hundreds of dollars to the price tag.</p>
<p><strong>Touch: </strong>Windows 7 lets you control the computer by touching the screen with your fingers, and some PC makers add their own touch-screen features. But this only works fully with newer types of touch screens, adding cost. Make sure any touch-screen model you buy has a full multitouch screen that supports all Windows 7 gestures. Apple uses the laptop touch pad, or its new mouse, as the multitouch, finger-gesture mechanism, instead of the screen. </p>
<p>As always, don&#8217;t buy more machine than you need.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s raining smart phones. No, make that super-smart phones, the type of hand-held computer, like Apple&#8217;s iPhone or the models powered by Google&#8217;s Android software, that browse the Web well, have sophisticated communication functions and are made to run a wide variety of modern third-party apps. This holiday season, new super-smart phone models seem to be appearing weekly.</p>

<p>So far, the king of this new field, in my view, remains its pioneer, the iPhone. Apple&#8217;s phone has its limitations, but its design, usability and versatility have kept it ahead. There&#8217;s a well-equipped iPhone model available for as little as $99, and the platform offers a staggering 85,000 downloadable apps. By comparison, there are around 10,000 apps for Android, 3,000 for the newer models of the Research in Motion (RIMM) BlackBerry, a few hundred modern apps for phones running the latest versions of Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) Windows Mobile software, and even fewer than that for Palm&#8217;s (PALM) Pre and its soon-to-be released little sibling, the Pixi.</p>
<p>But nobody is conceding the game to Apple (AAPL). A flood of new Android models is upon us, and RIM, which has a fanatical following for its BlackBerry models, is still potent despite the disappointment surrounding its first touch-screen model, the Storm.</p>

Motorola CLIQ</div>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing two new contenders, and both represent second chances of sorts. One is the revised version of the BlackBerry Storm, called the Storm2, from Verizon (VZ). The other is the first super-smart phone from Motorola, the fading former phone leader. It&#8217;s an Android-based model called the CLIQ, which will be offered by T-Mobile.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a quick look at these two new pocket computers.</p>
<h5 class="subhed"><strong>Motorola CLIQ</strong></h5>
<p>The CLIQ is a hefty slider phone, with a touch screen on top and a slide-out physical keyboard underneath. It has a smaller screen than the iPhone or Storm, and comes with just two gigabytes of memory versus 16 gigabytes for the $199 iPhone. But the CLIQ claims six hours of talk time, an hour more than Apple&#8217;s device, and, unlike the iPhone, it has a removable battery and expandable memory. It also has a higher-resolution camera—five megapixels versus three megapixels. </p>
<p>It boasts all of the standard Android features. But what sets the CLIQ apart is that it&#8217;s built around the idea of consolidating all your communications and social networking, and making them easy to access. Motorola (MOT) does this with special software called Blur, part of which exists on the device itself and part on a special Motorola-run server.</p>
<p>Blur takes the form of special on-screen widgets. One constantly displays your own status on various services, such as Facebook and Twitter. Another, called Happenings, shows your friends&#8217; latest updates on social-networking services, without requiring you to enter separate apps. A third, called Messages, offers a quick snapshot of current emails and text messages from all your accounts. Each entry in your address book also displays the person&#8217;s social-networking status and information.</p>
<p>In my tests, all of these Blur features worked nicely and proved handy, except that I couldn&#8217;t get it to consolidate both of my Gmail accounts.</p>
<p>My biggest gripe was with the physical keyboard, which I found cramped and hard to use. The top row is too close to the bottom of the screen and, on the bottom row, I kept hitting the symbols key when I was aiming for &#8220;M&#8221; or &#8220;N.&#8221; So I found myself constantly resorting to the virtual on-screen keyboard, which worked pretty well.</p>
<h5 class="subhed"><strong>BlackBerry Storm2</strong></h5>
<p>The original Storm, RIM&#8217;s first phone without a physical keyboard, didn&#8217;t convert droves of traditional BlackBerry lovers. This was partly because it had an odd typing mechanism where the whole screen moved with each tap on the virtual keyboard. Also, the phone lacked Wi-Fi and, when held vertically, the device offered only a cramped on-screen keyboard with multiple letters on each key.</p>

BlackBerry&#8217;s Storm2</div>
<p>The Storm2 fixes all those flaws. The screen now stays still when tapped, providing tactile feedback electronically instead of mechanically. This allows for faster, smoother typing. The new model also has Wi-Fi. And you can now use a full, albeit squeezed, virtual keyboard in vertical mode.</p>
<p>In addition, while the dimensions haven&#8217;t changed, the Storm2 looks sleeker and has a few user interface refinements, like an on-screen Send button.</p>
<p>Overall, I found the Storm2 worked well in my tests. Battery life was decent, with 5.5 hours of claimed talk time, and typing was much improved, though I doubt it will satisfy lovers of physical keyboards.</p>
<p>The browser is still inferior to Apple&#8217;s, Google&#8217;s and Palm&#8217;s. And the traditional BlackBerry interface cries out for a major overhaul in a touch device like this, especially when you add a lot of apps. RIM&#8217;s menu and folder metaphor seems tired on this device.</p>
<p>Verizon hasn&#8217;t set a launch date or price for the Storm2, but it&#8217;s likely to appear in November at around $200.</p>
<p>The super-smart-phone war is still in its early stages. There are more and even better devices on the way, and Apple will have plenty of clever competition.</p>
<p><strong>Corrections &#038; Amplifications</strong></p>
<p>The Motorola CLIQ comes with two gigabytes of memory and the $199 iPhone comes with 16 gigabytes. A previous version of this column incorrectly expressed these figures as megabytes, not gigabytes. An earlier version of this column also mistakenly stated, based on a BlackBerry fact sheet, that the Storm2 will ship with two gigabytes of memory. Wednesday night, after the column was published, the company said the Storm2 will actually ship with 18 gigabytes of memory. </p>

The company will release Windows 7, a faster and much better operating system than the little-loved Windows Vista, which did a lot to harm both the company&#8217;s reputation, and the productivity and blood pressure of its users. PC makers will rush to flood physical and online stores with new computers pre-loaded with Windows 7, and to offer the software to Vista owners who wish to upgrade.</p>

<p>With Windows 7, PC users will at last have a strong, modern successor to the sturdy and familiar, but aged, Windows XP, which is still the most popular version of Windows, despite having come out in 2001. In the high-tech world, an eight-year-old operating system is the equivalent of a 20-year-old car. While XP works well for many people, it is relatively weak in areas such as security, networking and other features more important today than when XP was designed around 1999.</p>
<p>After using pre-release versions of Windows 7 for nine months, and intensively testing the final version for the past month on many different machines, I believe it is the best version of Windows Microsoft (MSFT) has produced. It&#8217;s a boost to productivity and a pleasure to use. Despite a few drawbacks, I can heartily recommend Windows 7 to mainstream consumers.</p>
<p>Like the new Snow Leopard operating system released in August by Microsoft&#8217;s archrival, Apple (AAPL), Windows 7 is much more of an evolutionary than a revolutionary product. Its main goal was to fix the flaws in Vista and to finally give Microsoft customers a reason to move up from XP. But Windows 7 is packed with features and tweaks that make using your computer an easier and more satisfying experience.</p>

<p>Windows 7 introduces real advances in organizing your programs and files, arranging your taskbar and desktop, and quickly viewing and launching the page or document you want, when you want it. It also has cool built-in touch-screen features.</p>
<p>It removes a lot of clutter. And it mostly banishes Vista&#8217;s main flaws—sluggishness; incompatibility with third-party software and hardware; heavy hardware requirements; and constant, annoying security warnings.</p>
<p>I tested Windows 7 on 11 different computers, ranging from tiny netbooks to standard laptops to a couple of big desktops. These included machines from Lenovo, Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), Dell (DELL), Acer, Asus, Toshiba and Sony (SNE). I even successfully ran it on an Apple Macintosh laptop. On some of these machines, Windows 7 was pre-loaded. On others, I had to upgrade from an earlier version of Windows.</p>
<p>In most cases, the installation took 45 minutes or less, and the new operating system worked snappily and well. But, I did encounter some drawbacks and problems. On a couple of these machines, glacial start-up and reboot times reminded me of Vista. And, on a couple of others, after upgrading, key features like the display or touchpad didn&#8217;t work properly. Also, Windows 7 still requires add-on security software that has to be frequently updated. It&#8217;s tedious and painful to upgrade an existing computer from XP to 7, and the variety of editions in which Windows 7 is offered is confusing.</p>
<p>Finally, Microsoft has stripped Windows 7 of familiar built-in applications, such as email, photo organizing, address book, calendar and video-editing programs. These can be downloaded  free of charge, but they no longer come with the operating system, though some PC makers may choose to pre-load them.</p>
<p>In recent years, I, like many other reviewers, have argued that Apple&#8217;s Mac OS X operating system is much better than Windows. That&#8217;s no longer true. I still give the Mac OS a slight edge because it has a much easier and cheaper upgrade path; more built-in software programs; and far less vulnerability to viruses and other malicious software, which are overwhelmingly built to run on Windows.</p>
<p>Now, however, it&#8217;s much more of a toss-up between the two rivals. Windows 7 beats the Mac OS in some areas, such as better previews and navigation right from the taskbar, easier organization of open windows on the desktop and touch-screen capabilities. So Apple will have to scramble now that the gift of a flawed Vista has been replaced with a reliable, elegant version of Windows. </p>
<p>Here are some of the key features of Windows 7.</p>
<p><strong>New Taskbar: </strong>In Windows 7, the familiar taskbar has been reinvented and made taller. Instead of mainly being a place where icons of open windows temporarily appear, it now is a place where you can permanently &#8220;pin&#8221; the icons of frequently used programs anywhere along its length, and in any arrangement you choose. This is a concept borrowed from Apple&#8217;s similar feature, the Dock. But Windows 7 takes the concept further.</p>
<p>For each running program, hovering over its taskbar icon pops up a small preview screen showing a mini-view of that program. This preview idea was in Vista. But, in Windows 7, it has been expanded in several ways. Now, every open window in that program is included separately in the preview. If you mouse over a window in the preview screen, it appears at full size on your desktop and all other windows on the desktop become transparent—part of a feature called Aero Peek. Click on the window and it comes up, ready for use. You can even close windows from these previews, or play media in them.</p>
<p>I found this feature more natural and versatile than a similar feature in Snow Leopard called Dock Expose.</p>
<p>You can also use Aero Peek at any time to see your empty desktop, with open windows reduced to virtual panes of glass. To do this, you just hover over a small rectangle at the right edge of the taskbar.</p>
<p>Taskbar icons also provide Jump Lists—pop-up menus listing frequent actions or recent files used.</p>
<p><strong>Desktop organization: </strong>A feature called Snap allows you to expand windows to full-screen size by just dragging them to the top of the screen, or to half-screen size by dragging them to the left or right edges of the screen. Another called Shake allows you to make all other windows but the one you&#8217;re working on disappear by simply grabbing its title bar with the mouse and shaking it several times.</p>
<p><strong>File organization:</strong> In Windows Explorer, the left-hand column now includes a feature called Libraries. Each library—Documents, Music, Pictures and Videos—consolidates all files of those types regardless of which folder, or even which hard disk, they live in.</p>
<p><strong>Networking: </strong>Windows 7 still isn&#8217;t quite as natural at networking as I find the Mac to be, but it&#8217;s better than Vista. For instance, now you can see all available wireless networks by just clicking on an icon in the taskbar. A new feature called HomeGroups is supposed to let you share files more easily among Windows 7 PCs on your home network. In my tests, it worked, but not consistently, and it required typing in long, arcane passwords.</p>
<p><strong>Touch: </strong>Some of the same kinds of multitouch gestures made popular on the iPhone are now built into Windows 7. But these features won&#8217;t likely become popular for a while because to get the most out of them, a computer needs a special type of touch screen that goes beyond most of the ones existing now. I tested this on one such laptop, a Lenovo, and was able to move windows around, to resize and flip through photos, and more.</p>
<p><strong>Speed: </strong>In my tests, on every machine, Windows 7 ran swiftly and with far fewer of the delays typical in running Vista. All the laptops I tested resumed from sleep quickly and properly, unlike in Vista. Start-up and restart times were also improved. I chose six Windows 7 laptops from different makers to compare with a new MacBook Pro laptop. The Mac still started and restarted faster than most of the Windows 7 PCs. But the speed gap has narrowed considerably, and one of the Lenovos beat the Mac in restart time.</p>
<p><strong>Nagging: </strong>In the name of security, Vista put up nagging warnings about a wide variety of tasks, driving people crazy. In Windows 7, you can now set this system so it nags you only when things are happening that you consider really worth the nag. Also, Microsoft has consolidated most of the alerts from the lower-right system tray into one icon, and they seemed less frequent.</p>
<p><strong>Compatibility: </strong>I tried a wide variety of third-party software and all worked fine on every Windows 7 machine. These included Mozilla Firefox; Adobe (ADBE) Reader; Google&#8217;s (GOOG) Picasa and Chrome; and Apple&#8217;s iTunes and Safari. </p>
<p>I also tested several hardware devices, and, unlike Vista, Windows 7 handled all but one smoothly. These included a networked H-P printer, a Canon (CAJ) camera, an iPod nano, and at least five external flash drives and hard disks. The one failure was a Verizon (VZ) USB cellular modem. Microsoft says you don&#8217;t need external software to run these, but I found it was necessary, and even then had to use a trick I found on the Web to get it to work.</p>
<p><strong>System Requirements: </strong>Nearly all Vista PCs, and newer or beefier XP machines, should be able to run Windows 7 fine. Even the netbooks I tested ran it speedily, especially with the Starter Edition, which lacks some of the powerful graphics effects in the operating system. (Other netbooks will be able to run other editions.) </p>
<p>If you have a standard PC, called a 32-bit PC, you&#8217;ll need at least one gigabyte of memory, 16 gigabytes of free hard-disk space and a graphics system that can support Microsoft technologies called &#8220;DirectX 9 with WDDM 1.0.&#8221; You&#8217;ll also need a processor with a speed of at least one gigahertz. If you have a newer-style 64-bit PC, which can use more memory, you&#8217;ll need at least two gigabytes of memory and 20 gigabytes of free hard disk space. In either case, you should double the minimum memory specification.</p>

<p><strong>Installation, editions and price: </strong>There are four editions of Windows 7 of interest to consumers. One, a limited version called Starter, comes pre-loaded on netbooks. A second, called Professional, is mainly for people who need to tap remotely into company networks (check with your company to see if you need this). A third, called Ultimate, is mainly for techies who want every feature of all other editions. Most average consumers will want Home Premium, which costs $120 for upgrades.</p>
<p>The system for upgrading is complicated, but Vista owners can upgrade to the exactly comparable edition of Windows 7 while keeping all files, settings and programs in place.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, XP owners, the biggest body of Windows users, won&#8217;t be able to do that. They&#8217;ll have to wipe out their hard disks after backing up their files elsewhere, then install Windows 7, then restore their personal files, then re-install all their programs from the original CDs or downloaded installer files. Then, they have to install all the patches and upgrades to those programs from over the years.</p>
<p>Microsoft includes an Easy Transfer wizard to help with this, but it moves only personal files, not programs. This painful XP upgrade process is one of the worst things about Windows 7 and will likely drive many XP owners to either stick with what they&#8217;ve got or wait and buy a new one.</p>
<p>In my tests, both types of installations went OK, though the latter could take a long time.</p>
<p>Bottom line: Windows 7 is a very good, versatile operating system that should help Microsoft bury the memory of Vista and make PC users happy.</p>
<p>Correction: The edition of Microsoft&#8217;s Windows 7 operating system aimed at business users is called Windows 7 Professional. This week&#8217;s Personal Technology column erroneously stated it was named Business.</p>

Despite Google&#8217;s iconic brand, they have yet to develop the strong bond with U.S. consumers achieved by the Research in Motion (RIMM) BlackBerry or the Apple (AAPL) iPhone. And, after a year, Android has less than 10% of the 85,000 apps the iPhone now offers.</p>

<p>But Android is beginning to blossom in the market for this class of device, which is really a hand-held computer that performs many laptop-like functions.</p>
<p>In August, T-Mobile began offering a new $200 myTouch Android phone. Motorola (MOT) will shortly launch a new $200 Android model called the CLIQ. And, on Oct. 11, Sprint (S) will start selling perhaps the most unusual Android phone so far, the $180 HTC Hero. I&#8217;ve been testing the Hero, a touch-screen phone without a physical keyboard that has some important distinctions from earlier Android models. In general, I like the Hero and can recommend it to Sprint customers, or others looking for something powerful, but different.</p>
<p>HTC, a veteran Taiwan-based maker of phones, has altered Android more than anyone else so far. It has been gradually developing its own signature software layer that sits atop phone operating systems. With the Hero, it has applied this software for the first time to an Android phone, and that&#8217;s what sets the Hero apart from its Android brethren. The latest, beefed-up, version of this HTC software is called &#8220;Sense.&#8221;</p>
<p>Sense includes handsome, large widgets with extra features that go beyond the vanilla Android experience supplied to everyone by Google (GOOG). So the Hero looks and behaves somewhat differently. For instance, a contact page in the address book application consolidates that contact&#8217;s Facebook and Flickr accounts. The music player and photo album look better, and the Hero with Sense can use Microsoft&#8217;s Exchange service to synchronize mail, calendars and contacts.</p>

<p>Sense also offers something called Scenes—entire collections of sets of screens and apps, either canned or customized, that can change the phone software&#8217;s look and feel. With just a couple of clicks, you could switch between a work-oriented &#8220;scene,&#8221; that prominently features apps such as a stock tracker and your work email, and an entertainment-oriented scene filled with the music player, photo album and other apps.</p>
<p>As with Sprint&#8217;s Palm (PALM) Pre, the Hero&#8217;s price is a bit deceptive. To get the phone for $180, you must remember to mail in a rebate form worth $100. At purchase, you have to put up $280. On the other hand, Sprint&#8217;s monthly fees can be much cheaper than those for other carriers. You&#8217;ll have to pay at least $70 a month to use the Hero, the same minimum fee that AT&#038;T charges iPhone owners. But Sprint&#8217;s fee, unlike AT&#038;T&#8217;s (T), includes unlimited text messaging and unlimited free calls to any mobile number on any network.</p>
<p>The Hero&#8217;s hardware isn&#8217;t especially beautiful. It&#8217;s a dull grey, noticeably thicker than the iPhone, with a smaller screen and six buttons plus a trackball, which adds another navigation option to the touch screen. It&#8217;s the same length as an iPhone, but is a bit narrower and lighter. It comes with just two gigabytes of memory, compared with eight gigabytes on the $99 iPhone and 16 gigabytes on Apple&#8217;s $199 model, though the Hero&#8217;s memory, unlike the iPhone&#8217;s, is expandable via a hard-to-reach slot under its removable back cover.</p>
<p>One big drawback is battery life. Sprint is only claiming up to four hours of talk time for the Hero, versus five hours for the Pre and iPhone. But, unlike the iPhone&#8217;s, the Hero&#8217;s battery is removable. Another drawback: I sometimes found the touch screen unresponsive, requiring multiple pokes at an icon.</p>
<p>On the plus side, the Hero has a much higher resolution camera than the iPhone&#8217;s or Pre&#8217;s—five megapixels versus three megapixels.</p>
<p>It also functions as a video camera, and in my tests, both still photos and videos I took looked very good. Phone calls, even on speaker phone, were clear and strong, and the phone has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in addition to Sprint&#8217;s high-speed network, which in my view is better than its reputation. Web browsing was adequate.</p>
<p>HTC&#8217;s Sense gives the Hero seven screens on which to place apps, versus Android&#8217;s standard three screens. </p>
<p>And, in addition to the standard Android apps and the 8,000 downloadable apps from Android&#8217;s Market app store, there are a variety of large, beautiful HTC &#8220;widgets&#8221; you can use. The downside of these is that they can occupy an entire screen.</p>
<p>The most impressive widget is called People. It&#8217;s an address book in which each contact&#8217;s page features a scrolling bar at the bottom with icons that allow you to see that person&#8217;s most recent Facebook status, photos from Facebook and Flickr, plus emails and text messages she&#8217;s sent to you and recent calls between you. This is somewhat similar to Palm&#8217;s Synergy feature, which is also based around people.</p>
<p>Overall, I found the HTC Hero to be the best Android phone I&#8217;ve tested, and a worthy competitor to the iPhone, the BlackBerry and the Pre.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Dell is bound and determined to show that it can be a bigger player in the consumer market. The company also is trying to shake its reputation for stodgy design.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing two new Dells that aim to prove both points. One is a pricey, style-conscious, ultrathin laptop; the other is an economical all-in-one desktop with an optional touch screen that lets you flick through pictures, music and video, and perform other tasks, with just your fingers.</p>

<p>Both computers, the Adamo laptop and the Studio One 19 desktop, are attractive and functional. But neither is ground-breaking. The laptop is a belated competitor to superthin, high-end machines like Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) MacBook Air and Lenovo&#8217;s ThinkPad X300 series. The desktop is a belated competitor to Hewlett-Packard&#8217;s (HPQ) TouchSmart touch-screen series.</p>
<p>Before getting into the physical attributes of these computers, a major caveat is in order: Both run Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) sluggish, annoying Windows Vista operating system. That puts them at a disadvantage to computers using the faster Microsoft Windows XP, or Apple&#8217;s superior Leopard operating system.</p>
<p>The Studio One is handsome &#8212; bordered with cloth, wrap-around trim in red, blue, white or other colors. And its optional touch screen is a sexy feature, complemented by special Dell touch software called the Touch Zone. Perhaps its most striking attribute is price. You can get one for as little as $699, far below the $1,200 base price of the H-P TouchSmart.</p>
<p>However, there&#8217;s a catch to this low price. The $699 base model lacks the touch screen. That costs $100 extra. Also, all of the Studio One 19 models &#8212; even those configured to cost more than $1,000 &#8212; have a relatively small screen: just 18.5 inches. The base model of the H-P has a 22-inch screen.</p>
<p>Dell (DELL) says it deliberately made the Studio One smaller so it would fit on a kitchen counter, where family members can walk up to it and use it as a kiosk for viewing photos, surfing the Web and performing other tasks. It even comes with a family calendar program, called Cozi; a touch-based notepad feature for leaving messages; and an appealing finger-painting program for kids.</p>
<p>In my tests, all worked pretty well, and the touch features also work in regular Windows programs, not just in the Touch Zone. The only downside of this latter capability is that, to make touch control easier, Dell has blown up the text and graphics in Vista, with the unfortunate side effect of making some program icons look jagged and fuzzy. (You can turn this effect off.)</p>
<p>As for the kitchen scenario, I have my doubts. In my kitchen, the Studio One took up precious counter space &#8212; it&#8217;s as wide as my microwave &#8212; and the wired keyboard and mouse on the cheaper models clutter up the counter.</p>
<p>On the other hand, there&#8217;s nothing cluttered about Dell&#8217;s new Adamo laptop. Like the MacBook Air, the Adamo uses a solid metal case and a sealed battery, and it simultaneously projects sleekness and solidity. It&#8217;s gorgeous, in both its black and white versions, and feels great in the hand. If the label was hidden, you&#8217;d think it was from Sony (SNE) or Apple, not Dell.</p>
<p>Like the Air and the ThinkPad 300 series, the Adamo uses a screen that&#8217;s about 13 inches, with good resolution. And, like its two competitors, it&#8217;s very thin. In fact, the Adamo is thinner than the tapered Air at the latter&#8217;s thickest point. The Adamo also has a far better selection of built-in ports than its Apple rival, though almost all are inconveniently placed in a protruding strip at the back of the machine.</p>
<p>Also, like the Air, the Adamo has touch features built into its trackpad. It has a built-in solid-state drive, like the Apple and the Lenovo. Such drives are faster and use less power than regular hard disks, but cost more. Also like the Air, it lacks a DVD drive.</p>

<p>In my tests, the Adamo performed fine, and drew admiring glances wherever I took it. But the Adamo has three big flaws.</p>
<p>First, it&#8217;s expensive for these economic times &#8212; $2,000 with a 128-gigabyte drive and two gigabytes of memory. The Air can be bought for $1,800, with a slightly smaller regular hard disk. With the same size solid-state drive as the Adamo, the Air is $500 more.</p>
<p>Second, for all its thinness, the Adamo is relatively heavy. It weighs four pounds, versus three pounds for the Air.</p>
<p>Finally, it has mediocre battery life. In my tough battery test, where I turn off all power-saving features, leave on Wi-Fi, and play an endless loop of music, the Adamo got just 2 hours and 44 minutes, which likely translates in normal use to maybe 3.5 hours. By contrast, the Air lasted 40 minutes longer in the same test, and the Lenovo beat the Dell by 21 minutes.</p>
<p>With these machines, Dell is making a strong bid to win back consumers&#8217; hearts. It&#8217;s off to a decent start.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>To its fiercest devotees, one of the best things about the BlackBerry is its carefully designed physical keyboard, which the skilled BlackBerry addict can play like a violin. These folks scorn Apple&#8217;s popular iPhone, whose keyboard is virtual and must be operated by tapping on the screen.</p>
<p>But, on Friday, <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=vz'>Verizon Wireless</a> and <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=RIMM'>Research in Motion</a> (RIMM), the BlackBerry&#8217;s maker, will do the unthinkable: They will introduce a BlackBerry model without a physical keyboard, one where typing and navigating require tapping on glass, just as users do on the iPhone. This new model is called the BlackBerry Storm, and will sell for $250 with a two-year contract, though a $50 mail-in rebate can bring the price down close to the $199 that Apple (AAPL) charges for the base model of the iPhone.</p>

<p>Despite its lack of a keyboard, the Storm is a real BlackBerry in every other respect, with push email, corporate features and the familiar BlackBerry menus. In many respects, the Storm is a touch-based, large-screen version of the recently released BlackBerry Bold, which is the most polished version of a traditional BlackBerry. It is also the latest member of the new class of hand-held computers, the super-smart phone category kicked off by the iPhone last year and joined by the Google G1 earlier this year.</p>
<p>The Storm sports a large, high-resolution touch screen that fills most of its surface and automatically switches from portrait to landscape mode when the phone is turned. There&#8217;s also a forthcoming souped-up download store for third-party software, meant to be similar to the ones on the iPhone and the Google (GOOG) phone. And the Storm can even be used in European and other countries where most Verizon (VZ) phones don&#8217;t work.</p>

<p>However, the biggest innovation in the Storm is a clever feature RIM hopes will give it a big advantage over the iPhone. When you strike a key or icon on the Storm&#8217;s screen, you feel a physical sensation, as if you were pressing down on a real key or button. That&#8217;s because you are, in fact, pressing a real button. The entire glass display is one large button, mounted on a mechanical substructure that allows it to be depressed when pressure is applied.</p>
<p>The idea behind this feature is to make typing on glass feel much more like typing on a real keyboard, and thus to make the virtual keyboard, and the touch interface, more acceptable to people used to physical keyboards and buttons. This push-down screen also replaces the side-mounted scroll wheel or track ball on other BlackBerrys for activating menu choices and icons.</p>
<p>But, in my tests, this physical feedback feature, which RIM calls SurePress, didn&#8217;t magically turn the Storm&#8217;s touch interface and virtual keyboard into their physical counterparts. The feature does provide a more reassuring confirmation that a key has been struck or an icon has been clicked than the mere visual feedback one receives from the iPhone. But neither I, nor any of the several BlackBerry addicts I asked to try it out, considered typing on the Storm&#8217;s keyboard to be very similar to using the keyboard of a traditional full-sized BlackBerry.</p>
<p>In my opinion, using the Storm&#8217;s keyboard is much more like using the iPhone&#8217;s keyboard than a traditional BlackBerry&#8217;s. I found that I could type quite well on the Storm after awhile, but that a greater adjustment, and more practice, were required than with a physical keyboard.</p>
<p>The Storm also has a keyboard oddity that I found annoying, and that may put off others. It presents you with a full virtual keyboard only when you are holding it horizontally. When you hold the Storm vertically, you get a mashed-up keyboard, like the one on the narrower BlackBerry Pearl, which has multiple letters on each key. This keyboard design relies on software to guess which letter you meant to press. You can also switch to a virtual cellphone-style keypad that requires you to hit each key multiple times.</p>

<p>This is a curious design decision. Once a company ditches a physical keyboard for a virtual one, it can create all kinds of keyboard variations. RIM could have offered a full, vertically oriented keyboard, even if it would have had smaller, more closely spaced keys.</p>
<p>RIM also failed to customize the Storm&#8217;s virtual keyboard for some common, specific tasks. For instance, on the iPhone, when you are typing in a Web address in the browser, the keyboard morphs to offer a convenient key that automatically enters &#8220;.com&#8221;. Not so on the Storm.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s another glaring deficit in the Storm: It lacks Wi-Fi capability. This means that, unlike on the Bold, the iPhone or the Google G1, if high-speed cellphone data service is absent or pokey, you can&#8217;t fall back on speedy Wi-Fi connections in public places. And, at home or in the office, you can&#8217;t take advantage of Wi-Fi connections that are often much faster than cellphone data networks.</p>
<p>The Storm has some important advantages over the iPhone. Its screen, while 7% smaller physically, offers about 13% higher resolution. Photos and videos look beautiful on it. It has much better battery life for phone calls than either the iPhone or the Google G1. While the latter two phones deliver just under their claimed five hours of talk time, in my tests, the Storm lasted a bit over six hours, which is actually half an hour more than its claimed 5.5 hours of talk time. And the Storm has a removable battery, unlike its Apple rival.</p>
<p>This new BlackBerry comes with more memory than the similarly priced base model of the iPhone &#8212; nine gigabytes versus eight gigabytes. And, unlike the iPhone&#8217;s memory, the Storm&#8217;s is expandable, via larger flash cards.</p>
<p>The Storm&#8217;s camera is much better than the iPhone&#8217;s, at 3.2 megapixels, versus just 2 megapixels for the Apple device. It also has zoom and flash, features the iPhone&#8217;s camera lacks. And, unlike the iPhone or the Google G1, the Storm can record videos. In my tests, all of these camera features worked well.</p>
<p>Also, the Storm has copy and paste functionality; MMS (a service for sending photos directly to other phones without using email); voice dialing; and the ability to act as a modem for your laptop. It also allows you to edit, and not just to view, Microsoft (MSFT) Office documents. All of these features are missing from the iPhone out of the box.</p>
<p>The Storm also has a better speaker than the iPhone, and a noise-canceling microphone system. Phone calls, even on speaker phone, were crisp, clear and plenty loud. Physically, the Storm is attractive but hardly svelte. While it&#8217;s about the same length and width as the iPhone, it is 15% thicker and 17% heavier &#8212; almost as heavy as the chunky G1.</p>
<p>The Verizon high-speed network on which the Storm runs is older and better-established than either the T-Mobile (DT) high-speed system the G1 uses or the AT&#038;T (T) 3G network used by the current iPhone. Where Verizon&#8217;s high-speed data coverage is strong, the Storm flies.</p>
<p>But, because it lacks Wi-Fi, the Storm can be much slower at Web access than its main competitors. I tested these Web speeds in two hotels in Silicon Valley. In the first, where Verizon reception was strong, the Storm trounced the iPhone on cellphone data speeds, averaging over 800 kilobits per second to the iPhone&#8217;s 621 kbps over AT&#038;T. But, when I switched the iPhone to use the hotel&#8217;s Wi-Fi network, it beat the Storm by 100 kbps or so.</p>
<p>At the second hotel, barely a mile away, the Storm&#8217;s lack of Wi-Fi hurt much more. There, Verizon&#8217;s signal was poor, and data speeds on the Storm averaged a horrible 96 kbps. But the iPhone on AT&#038;T averaged 459 kbps, and on Wi-Fi the iPhone averaged 785 kbps.</p>
<p>My test Storm, which was a near-final model missing only a few minor software tweaks, was also sluggish at some tasks. It took noticeably longer than the iPhone to flip the first photo from landscape to portrait orientation, or to start the process of flipping through a series of photos by swiping them with a finger. And some other tasks were also slow. It&#8217;s possible that production models will be quicker.</p>
<p>Rim has tweaked the familiar BlackBerry user interface for the touch screen, and in general these changes worked well. You select the menu item or icon you want with a light touch, then press down on the screen to activate or confirm your choice. There are even a couple of cool new touch features. For instance, in a list of emails, if you lightly touch and hold one entry, the Storm shows you all messages in that thread.</p>
<p>But this combination of a light touch followed by a hard press on the large screen took some practice, just like typing did. It befuddled several BlackBerry veterans at first.</p>
<p>And some common tasks took more steps than on the iPhone. For instance, emailing a link from a Web page required four steps on the Storm, versus two on the Apple device. The Storm&#8217;s email system will be familiar to every BlackBerry user. It has the same corporate email features as other BlackBerrys, and I was easily able as well to use a BlackBerry Internet email account and to set up several personal email accounts, including Gmail.</p>
<p>The Web browser is much improved over the one in older BlackBerry models, and offers multiple ways to view and navigate pages, including one in which a finger moves a cursor, just as on a PC. But I found that panning and zooming in the browser was a bit slower and more awkward than on the iPhone. And, to make some Web sites work properly, I had to dig through menus to change options.</p>
<p>Using the BlackBerry desktop software, I was easily able to synchronize my calendar and contact data over a cable from a Windows PC. (There&#8217;s also Mac software for the same task.) But, unlike the iPhone or the G1, the Storm doesn&#8217;t offer wireless synchronization from consumer services, only from corporate servers.</p>
<p>The Storm&#8217;s multimedia software isn&#8217;t as fancy as the iPhone&#8217;s, but it&#8217;s better than the G1&#8217;s, and worked very well in my tests.</p>
<p>Overall, the Storm is a very capable handheld computer that will appeal to BlackBerry users who have been pining for a touch-controlled device with a larger screen. And it offers yet another good option for anyone who is looking to buy one of the new, more powerful, pocket computers.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The parade of iPhone lookalikes continues. Soon after <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=aapl'>Apple</a> (AAPL) announced the first iPhone a year ago, factories in Asia, at the behest of U.S. phone carriers, were asked to respond to the sleek, touch-screen device. Some already have reached America; more are coming.</p>
<p>The latest to arrive is the Samsung Instinct, to be introduced by <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=S'>Sprint</a> (S) on June 20. I&#8217;ve been testing the Instinct, and while it isn&#8217;t a bad phone and has some features the Apple product lacks, it&#8217;s no match for the iPhone. The manufacturers haven&#8217;t replicated the iPhone&#8217;s greatest strength: beautiful, powerful, breakthrough software.</p>

<p>Also, the timing of the Instinct is unfortunate. It was designed to go up against the first iPhone. Sprint even has a Web site (<a href="http://nowisgood.com" rel="external">nowisgood.com</a>) comparing the two devices. But the Instinct will go on sale only three weeks before Apple and AT&amp;T (T) start selling the new 3G iPhone, the second-generation model announced earlier this week. This second iPhone model corrects some of the first model&#8217;s main weaknesses, wiping out some advantages Sprint hoped the Instinct would have.</p>
<p>Before getting into the details of the Instinct, a few words about the new iPhone, its main competition. I don&#8217;t do full reviews of products until I have tested them extensively, but my first impressions of the 3G iPhone are largely positive.</p>
<p>The price of the new iPhone&#8217;s base model, which comes with 8 gigabytes of memory, is $199, a 50% price cut from the comparable first-generation model. Yet, it now works on AT&amp;T&#8217;s fastest data network, promising anywhere from two to five times the speed of its predecessor. It also has GPS for tracking your location, and fully supports over-the-air synchronization of email, contacts and calendars &#8212; through Microsoft (MSFT) Exchange in corporations or via a similar new consumer service from Apple called MobileMe. And you&#8217;ll be able to download directly to the phone a whole universe of third-party programs, from productivity software to games.</p>
<p>On the downside, the new iPhone&#8217;s camera remains very basic and still can&#8217;t capture video. For people who prefer physical keyboards, the iPhone will still fall short. It continues to include only a virtual onscreen keyboard. And the iPhone remains locked to a single carrier in the U.S., AT&amp;T, which will charge $10 more per month for unlimited data consumption on the device.</p>
<p>The iPhone, along with some competitors like the BlackBerry, are really hand-held computers that happen to make voice calls. And they&#8217;re getting more powerful and innovative. So far, competitors like the Instinct, while trying to look like iPhones, are still mainly voice devices with so-so computing features tacked on.</p>
<p>For instance, while the Instinct is a touch-screen device, it lacks the iPhone&#8217;s &#8220;multi-touch&#8221; system, which includes features that recognize multiple fingers and gestures, and allows actions like shrinking a photo by &#8220;pinching&#8221; it. The touch system on the Instinct is more like that on an ancient ATM than a cutting-edge gadget, even though it has a gimmicky feedback mechanism that gives you a tiny vibration-jolt when you press an icon.</p>
<p>Physically, the Instinct looks a lot like the iPhone &#8212; a dark slab without a physical keyboard or many buttons dominated by a large screen. It&#8217;s a bit longer and thicker than the iPhone, but a tad narrower and lighter. Its screen is smaller than the iPhone&#8217;s and has lower resolution.</p>

<p>The Instinct has the same $199 price tag as the new iPhone, after a rebate and with a two-year contract. Service plans are likely to start at around $70, in line with the minimum monthly fee AT&amp;T will charge on the new iPhone. But it comes with just one-quarter of the memory the base iPhone includes.</p>
<p>Like the 3G iPhone, the Instinct runs on a fast cellular network that promises speeds similar to what people get with slow home DSL service. In my tests, it seemed to deliver this promised speed. It also has GPS and navigation. But, unlike the iPhone, the Instinct lacks Wi-Fi wireless networking, which can often be faster than the cellphone networks or available where there is no speedy cellphone coverage.</p>
<p>The Instinct has a removable battery, something the iPhone lacks. And Sprint claims 5.7 hours of talk time on one charge, more than the five hours that Apple claims for its 3G model. Sprint&#8217;s new baby has a few other features that even the latest iPhone omits, such as a built-in service for viewing TV shows and a voice-command system.</p>
<p>But I found its email system and Web browser to be less sophisticated than the iPhone&#8217;s or the BlackBerry&#8217;s. I also thought the phone&#8217;s onscreen keyboard was harder to use than Apple&#8217;s. It would flip unpredictably from landscape to portrait mode. The Instinct does allow handwriting recognition as an alternative, something the iPhone doesn&#8217;t.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re a devoted Sprint customer, or want to avoid AT&amp;T, the Instinct is an OK choice. But it&#8217;s no iPhone.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Predicting the new gadgets that Apple (AAPL) might concoct next is a favorite parlor game of the technology industry, Wall Street and the blogosphere. The latest chatter is that company CEO
<phrase name="Jobs, Steve" type="PERSON" vrtysux="PERSON|Jobs, Steve">Steve Jobs</phrase> will reveal at a developer conference beginning June 9 a new version of the iPhone that can surf the Web over fast 3G wireless networks.</p>
<p>Forget next month. It&#8217;s more fun thinking about what digital toys Apple might be making in five years. Of course, Mr. Jobs&#8217;s penchant for secrecy means such predictions are often little more than daydreaming. Just do an Internet search for &#8220;Apple&#8221; and &#8220;mockup&#8221; to see photos of products invented by Apple fans.</p>

<p>Forrester Research (FORR) is the latest to look into the crystal ball in a new report that imagines the Apple products of 2013. But rather than predict Apple jet packs or other outlandish new directions, the research firm uses the company&#8217;s recent history as a guide to forecasting.</p>
<p>Forrester&#8217;s conclusion: While much of Apple&#8217;s great successes have been mobile products such as the iPod and the iPhone, the company will seek to colonize rooms throughout the home.</p>
<p>Among the new products Forrester predicts Apple will create are wall-mountable digital picture frames with small high-definition screens and speakers that wirelessly play media, including photos, videos and music, stored on a computer elsewhere in the home. Such products already exist, but Apple could put its own twist on them &#8212; for example, by adding its design panache and a touch-sensitive screen that lets viewers flip from image to image with a finger swipe, <em>a la</em> the iPhone.</p>
<p>For the bedroom, Forrester envisions an Apple &#8220;clock radio&#8221; that pipes in music and other media across a home network. Possible, too, is an &#8220;AppleSound&#8221; universal remote control, also with a touch-sensitive screen, that lets users browse their music collections and change the songs playing through their stereo as they stroll around the house. This latter technology is already available in primitive form through an application called Signal (<a href="http://www.alloysoft.com" rel="external">www.alloysoft.com</a>) that turns the iPod touch and the iPhone into remote controls for Apple&#8217;s iTunes program.</p>
<p>Forrester also thinks Apple could extend into the home the technical assistance currently offered by &#8220;Genius Bar&#8221; personnel in Apple retail stores. Apple in-home installation services will become especially important as its array of products for the home grows. &#8220;The complexity level here can be quite daunting if you have five or six of these different devices,&#8221; says

<p>An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment on the company&#8217;s product plans.</p>
<p>Apple prognosticating is such a popular pastime, in part, because Mr. Jobs has proved so adept at becoming a power broker in markets a Silicon Valley computer company &#8212; once known as Apple Computer &#8212; has no right to dominate. The iPod remains the top MP3 player, with more than 70% of the market, and Apple is now the top retailer of music in the nation, ahead of Wal-Mart (WMT) Stores. Less than a year after entering the cellphone business with the iPhone, Apple became the second-largest provider of smart phones in the U.S.</p>
<p>That said, the company had an underwhelming foray into the living room with a television set-top device called Apple TV that plays music, photos and movies downloaded from the Internet and PCs on a home network. In an interview earlier this year after dropping the price on the product by $70 to $229, Mr. Jobs said he was disappointed in its sales.</p>
<p>Despite the hiccups, veteran observers of Apple say Mr. Jobs&#8217;s intent is clear. &#8220;I see everything Steve is doing as positioning himself to take over completely the living room,&#8221; says
<phrase name="Brown, John Seely" type="PERSON" vrtysux="PERSON|Brown, John Seely">John Seely Brown</phrase>, a visiting scholar at the University of Southern California and the former director of Xerox&#8217;s PARC, the Palo Alto, Calif., research center that inspired some of the innovations of the original Macintosh.</p>
<p>One long-running prediction, proved wrong again and again: that Apple might make a television set. Forrester throws cold water on the idea. Yet some still believe that Apple will one day get into the business as conventional TV makers start to integrate into their sets the ability to surf the Web. Apple already designs computer displays that are as large as some HDTVs.</p>

<phrase name="Wozniak, Steve" type="PERSON" vrtysux="PERSON|Wozniak, Steve">Steve Wozniak</phrase>, the co-founder of Apple with Mr. Jobs, says it would make &#8220;a lot of sense&#8221; for Apple to do a television set that can also access media stored on the Internet and local PCs. &#8220;I only started thinking that way recently,&#8221; Mr. Wozniak says. &#8220;Apple is obviously in the world of delivering display devices already.&#8221;</p>
<p>Mr. Brown thinks Apple could simplify the traditional functions on TV sets, like the bewildering electronic programming guides that list the hundreds of channels available to viewers. &#8220;Most people find operating high-quality TV systems incredibly awkward,&#8221; he says. &#8220;They&#8217;re as bad as our computer systems.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I&#8217;ve been testing a black-and-silver cellphone featuring a large touch screen populated with an array of colorful icons against a black background. Tapping the icons launches functions like a music player, Web browser and text-messaging program.</p>
<p>That may sound like Apple&#8217;s heavily publicized iPhone, which runs on the AT&amp;T wireless network, but it&#8217;s not. This phone is called the Voyager, and it&#8217;s made by LG and runs on the rival Verizon Wireless network.</p>
<p>Despite their superficial similarities, the two devices are very, very different. In fact, Verizon&#8217;s public-relations people are at pains to say the Voyager isn&#8217;t intended as an &#8220;iPhone killer&#8221; or even a &#8220;smart phone.&#8221;</p>
<p>Still, the Voyager is worth a close look, if only because it is one of the first competitors that attempts to mimic Apple&#8217;s touch interface, and many of its functions overlap the iPhone&#8217;s.</p>
<p>The Voyager beats the iPhone in certain respects. Unlike Apple&#8217;s product, it runs on a fast, 3G data network. And my experience has been that Verizon&#8217;s network has better coverage than AT&amp;T&#8217;s in many cities, especially on the East Coast. It also costs less: $299, after a rebate, with a two-year service contract, compared with $399 for the iPhone.</p>
<p>In addition, the Voyager has GPS and thus provides real-time navigation, a capability the iPhone currently lacks. And the Voyager can even receive live TV programs for an extra monthly fee of $15, though it gets only eight channels and its TV function works only in certain cities.</p>
<p>A big advantage of the Voyager for some people is that it has a physical keyboard for typing in addition to the kind of virtual onscreen keys that are the iPhone&#8217;s only method for entering text. This keyboard is revealed by opening the phone, which then resembles a little laptop with a display that&#8217;s separate from the outside touch screen. I found that typing worked pretty well. For folks who insist on a physical keyboard, this is a big deal.</p>
<p>Finally, LG has enhanced the Voyager&#8217;s touch screen with feedback: When you tap an icon or scroll through a list, you get a light physical sensation.</p>
<p>But the Voyager is bulkier than the sleek iPhone &#8212; about 50% thicker and 40% larger overall &#8212; even though it&#8217;s a tad lighter. And it lacks the iPhone&#8217;s ability to use Wi-Fi hot spots and home networks, which are often faster than Verizon&#8217;s 3G network. It also has only about half the battery life; a smaller, lower-resolution screen, and just a fraction of the Apple&#8217;s internal memory. (Unlike the iPhone, the Voyager lets you add memory cards, but it doesn&#8217;t come with any.)</p>
<p>Most importantly, the Voyager suffers badly in the area where Apple&#8217;s phone shines: software. Whether Verizon considers it a direct iPhone competitor or not, the LG product tries to do many of the same things, and it generally falls short.</p>
<p>This is the true challenge that the iPhone poses to established phone makers like LG. Apple has managed to build into its phone a real PC-grade operating system with a breakthrough user interface and elegant programs, something that has eluded the major cellphone makers.</p>
<p>As with so many of the new feature-packed mobile phones, the Voyager&#8217;s user interface is clumsy and confusing, requiring too many steps to perform simple tasks. And its applications, such as the photo organizer, music player, Web browser and email program, are primitive compared with the iPhone&#8217;s.</p>
<p>In fact, the Voyager, bafflingly, has several different user interfaces &#8212; two on the outer touch screen and an entirely different one on the inner screen above the keyboard that doesn&#8217;t work by touch at all. Some functions work only with the inner screen.</p>
<p>Scrolling through lists with the Voyager&#8217;s touch screen is a halting, frustrating process compared with the smooth, slick scrolling on the iPhone. Its touch functions are old style and basic compared with the new &#8220;multitouch&#8221; approach that Apple built into the iPhone. Unlike the iPhone, the Voyager doesn&#8217;t allow you to &#8220;flick&#8221; through photos or other screens, or to use two fingers to enlarge or shrink photos or Web pages. It also doesn&#8217;t automatically change photos or Web pages from portrait to landscape view by just turning the phone.</p>
<p>In addition, while the Voyager&#8217;s Web browser can show real Web-page layouts, I found it to be far inferior to the iPhone&#8217;s browser, which shows entire pages and then zooms in on the parts you want to read with a couple of finger taps.</p>
<p>Apparently because the Voyager isn&#8217;t considered a business tool or smart phone, its email function isn&#8217;t included on any of the main menus or even located under the envelope icon labeled &#8220;messaging.&#8221; To find it, you have to wade through multiple menus with unhelpful names like &#8220;Tools on the Go.&#8221;</p>
<p>Even doing something as simple as entering flight mode &#8212; which turns off a phone&#8217;s internal radios for use on a plane and takes two steps on the iPhone &#8212; requires five steps on the Voyager.</p>
<p>Verizon is promising to improve the Voyager, but right now it&#8217;s a classic example of how the leading cellphone makers are going to have to step up their games, especially in software, to match Apple&#8217;s upstart device.</p>
