			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As newspapers, magazines and TV stations face dire economic challenges, and journalism moves increasingly online, debates are raging about how best to preserve quality news and commentary while still making money.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s lots of experimentation with different approaches. Many journalists, old and new, are operating as stand-alone bloggers, but finding it hard to make a living. Web advertising has weakened with the economy, and often can&#8217;t cover the costs of expensive reporting. A couple of respected traditional publications have successfully attracted large numbers of paid subscribers online, but many others who have tried have failed.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, advertisers also are scrambling to figure out the best way to sell their products online, in a manner that both attracts potential customers and blends in well with the content and style of news sites. And publishers are trying to capture the conversation and sense of community that permeate services like Facebook and Twitter.</p>
<p>This week, a new Web news site is entering the fray, with a novel approach to journalistic entrepreneurship, new forms of advertising, and an effort to blend journalism and social networking.</p>
<p>The site, called True/Slant, at <a href="http://trueslant.com" rel="external">trueslant.com</a>, is opening its doors via an odd preliminary status it calls an &#8220;open alpha.&#8221; This means it&#8217;s rough around the edges, and not yet taking in revenue, but hopes to attract enough participation to hone its design and operation.</p>
<p>True/Slant is run by a former news executive at America Online who worked at a variety of publications, including The Wall Street Journal. It covers a wide range of topics, such as politics, culture, sports, business, health, science and food.</p>
<p>It is launching with 65 journalists, or &#8220;knowledge experts,&#8221; assigned to specific topics. Each of these contributors gets a page to house their journalism and, it is hoped, an active social network of followers who will regularly discuss the articles they read there. Each page also will feature headlines of stories elsewhere on the Web selected by the contributors. These &#8220;headline grabs&#8221; link back to the originating outside site.</p>
<p>The initial group of contributors includes current or former writers for publications such as the Financial Times, Rolling Stone, the New York Times, Time magazine and the Boston Globe.</p>
<p>Readers can go directly to the page of their favorite contributor, but the site&#8217;s home page will knit together popular content and contributors, and each reader will be able to track multiple topics and contributors through a streaming feed called &#8220;I&#8217;m following.&#8221;</p>
<p>True/Slant will run regular Web ads throughout. But, in a highly unusual move, the site plans to offer advertisers their own entire pages where they can run blogs and try to attract a network of followers. These will have the same design and features of the journalists&#8217; pages, but will be labeled as ad content.</p>
<p>The journalists are paid a small amount, but the plan is to turn them into minipublishers under the True/Slant umbrella. They will be offered a share of the advertising and sponsorship revenues their individual pages generate and, in some cases, equity in True/Slant, which is backed by venture capital.</p>
<p>These contributors are allowed to keep writing elsewhere, either online or in traditional media, and even to promote these outside efforts on True/Slant. But they are expected to post original commentary and analysis to True/Slant. They also are allowed to arrange for their own advertising or sponsorships, in addition to what True/Slant can sell, and even, in some cases, to add other authors to their pages.</p>
<p>In another unusual move, the contributors also are required to actively engage with readers on the site. They must post a minimum number of comments in reader discussions about their articles and curate the comments, giving prominence to the most interesting. They are even expected to comment on each other&#8217;s posts.</p>
<p>This required engagement is an attempt to capture some of the excitement of a social network, and it ties in directly with a contributor&#8217;s success. On the home page, and elsewhere throughout the site, True/Slant promotes not only the most popular contributors, but also the most active ones. High rankings in these categories can lead to higher traffic on each contributor&#8217;s page, and, indirectly, to higher income.</p>
<p>Readers who are active commenters can also gain prominence on the site, especially if those comments are popular or called out for special attention. A front-page panel will highlight the most active commenters, and the most called-out comments.</p>
<p>The layout of the site is clean and handsome, a decent effort to meld a news site and a social network. One layout flaw the company hopes to fix: There&#8217;s no easy way to find a list of all topics, only those it considers hot at any moment.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s way too early to know if True/Slant will succeed. For one thing, it is still dependent on advertising, not subscriptions. And ethical questions could arise, because the site&#8217;s operators don&#8217;t edit or preapprove the content, and the model of blended journalism and advertising could prove problematic.</p>
<p>But it&#8217;s another example of how the Web is changing traditional media, and might be worth a look.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Apple&#8217;s Safari browser has always been speedy and has introduced its share of innovations. While it is mostly used on Apple&#8217;s own Macintosh computers, with which it is bundled, Safari also comes in a Windows version and it is the browser on the iPhone as well.</p>

<p>Last week, Apple released a new version 4 of Safari, for Mac and Windows, that it claims is the world&#8217;s fastest browser, and that has a number of new graphical features Apple says will make it easier to navigate the Web. Safari 4 is labeled as a beta, and both the Windows and Mac versions are free downloads at <a href="http://apple.com/safari" rel="external">apple.com/safari</a>.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing the new Safari on both operating systems, comparing it with Microsoft&#8217;s Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. My verdict is that Safari 4 really is significantly faster than its rivals, but that its user-interface changes are a big disappointment. They either add relatively minor eye candy, are catch-ups to features introduced by rivals, or actually make the browser harder to use.</p>
<p>First, let&#8217;s talk about speed. I tested Safari 4 on multiple Macs, and on multiple Windows PCs running Vista and XP. I did these tests on three different networks &#8212; a fast fiber-optic service, a typical hotel Internet connection, and a relatively slow cellphone data card.</p>
<p>On each type of connection, I timed the loading of a variety of common Web sites, like Facebook, The Wall Street Journal, the New York Times and Major League Baseball, both individually and in folders that opened multiple sites simultaneously in tabs.</p>
<p>The results were striking. In nearly every case, Safari 4 was much faster than any of the other browsers. In many of my tests, it required only a third or a half of the time to load a given page, or a group of sites, as the other browsers did, even though all were running on the same computer and the same Internet connection.</p>
<p>I was especially interested to see that Safari 4 for Windows blew away Google&#8217;s Chrome in my tests, even though both browsers share some open-source technology managed by Apple but licensed to others.</p>
<p>In some cases, where the new Safari&#8217;s speed advantage was just a few seconds, that quickness may seem unimportant. But, when opening a large number of pages in tabs, it really makes a difference. For instance, on my fastest test network, Safari 4 for Windows fully opened a folder of 21 news sites in 43 seconds, while it took the new IE 8 over two minutes to perform the same task.</p>
<p>I wish I could be more enthusiastic about the other changes in Safari, but I can&#8217;t. Apple&#8217;s worst decision was to move the tabs that represent open pages to the very top edge of the browser screen, above all the toolbars and menus, instead of below the toolbars and menus, where they have traditionally resided.</p>
<p>This move was copied from Chrome, and Apple says it makes the tabs easier to discover. But I disagree strongly. Apple&#8217;s implementation, in my opinion, makes the tabs harder to see and use on a crowded computer screen and separates the tabs too much from the content in the pages they represent. This is a particular problem in Vista, whose translucent window title bars can make the tabs almost impossible to read.</p>
<p>In another unfortunate choice, Safari 4 has done away with the progress bar that shows how much of a page has loaded. The company says it did this because Web pages are now so complex that the bar was no longer fully accurate. But I believe users like to see where they are in the page-loading process, even if it&#8217;s only a rough approximation.</p>
<p>I am not alone in this sentiment. Already, Apple-oriented Web sites which normally defend the company&#8217;s every move are publishing instructions on how to hack Safari 4 to restore the old tab system and the progress bar.</p>
<p>The new graphical features are just OK. Now, when you open a new tab, without specifying a Web address, Safari fills the formerly empty space with a gorgeous graphical representation of your most-visited Web sites. You can simply click on any of these to go right to that page. It even indicates when a page has changed since you last viewed it.</p>
<p>This is nice, but it copies a feature already in Chrome, and I believe most people won&#8217;t see it much, since they usually know in advance which site they want to view in a new tab.</p>
<p>Apple has also adopted &#8220;cover flow,&#8221; iTunes&#8217; visual method for navigating albums, for the bookmark organizer in Safari. It shows a preview of each page in your bookmark list. Again, this is fine, but not a big deal.</p>
<p>Safari 4 also catches up to its rivals by offering suggestions of what you are looking for when you type in a Web address or search term. This worked well, but not any better than it does in other browsers.</p>
<p>Finally, the Windows version of Safari now looks and works much more like a standard Windows program than a Mac program. It has traditional Windows-style buttons and behaviors, which Safari lacked before.</p>
<p>Overall, Safari 4 is a mixed bag. The speed is great, but the design changes range from mildly interesting to downright annoying.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Internet presents a real dilemma for parents with younger children. On the one hand, it&#8217;s filled with fun and wholesome sites for kids, and lots of educational material. On the other, it teems with inappropriate content and potentially dangerous means of communicating with strangers.</p>
<p>There are tools for dealing with the problem, most commonly, filtering software that attempts to bar sexual, violent and other objectionable material. But these can frustrate kids and parents, by either blocking too many things or not blocking enough.</p>

<p>Some other approaches, such as the parental controls built right into the latest Windows (MSFT) and Macintosh (AAPL) operating systems, offer parents more control by allowing them to specify what Web sites a child can access. But that requires close and constant involvement by the parent as the child seeks access to more Web sites.</p>
<p>This week marks the launch of a parental-control service with a somewhat different approach. It&#8217;s called KidZui, and it aims to offer kids a safe subset of the Internet where they can roam freely without triggering parental worry. KidZui, for children ages 3 to 12, hopes to emphasize the positive, rather than the negative.</p>
<p>The service, from a San Diego company of the same name, claims to encompass 500,000 safe sites, photos and videos, ranging from pop culture to science, comics and games to history. You can watch the latest &#8220;American Idol&#8221; contestant, learn about dinosaurs, delve into history or visit popular kids&#8217; sites, such as Webkinz and Club Penguin.</p>
<p>The sites, photos and videos included in KidZui are approved by a team of about 200 parents and teachers across the country, and are ranked by age, so that a site that might be right for an 11-year-old isn&#8217;t served up to a 4-year-old.</p>
<p>While a child can establish a list of friends in KidZui, and can share content with them, there is no instant-messaging or email function.</p>
<p>KidZui isn&#8217;t free, and it can&#8217;t be accessed via a regular Web browser. Instead, you must download a special KidZui browser, from <a href="http://kidzui.com" rel="external">kidzui.com</a>, that runs on either Windows or Macintosh computers. I tested it on both platforms, and it downloaded quickly and installed smoothly.</p>
<p>The service nominally costs $99.95 a year, or $9.95 a month, but there is a 30-day free trial and an introductory rate of $49.95 a year, or $4.95 a month. It has no ads, other than those already present on Web sites kids visit.</p>
<p>A key selling point of the service is that busy parents can simply set up KidZui and trust that their kids will be safe online. To that end, the program can be optionally configured, so that a child can&#8217;t escape from it to use the computer&#8217;s standard browser, for example. A parent can set KidZui to launch when the computer starts up, in full-screen mode. In this mode, KidZui automatically disables or hides the common keystrokes, icons, commands and techniques that allow users to switch to, or to start up, other programs.</p>
<p>In addition, when KidZui is running in this locked-down mode, the child can be barred from quitting KidZui without a parent&#8217;s password. In my tests over the past week, I found some loopholes in this lockdown system, but the company plugged each leak I turned up. I can&#8217;t swear that a clever kid won&#8217;t be able to escape from KidZui, but the program blocks most obvious exits.</p>
<p>Inside the software, the company has tried to create a fun, lighthearted world. Each child is represented by a &#8220;Zui,&#8221; a cartoon-like character that can be customized with hair, clothing and other features. There are lots of sound effects, and kids can rate content with illustrated tags ranging from &#8220;best&#8221; and &#8220;cool&#8221; to &#8220;boring&#8221; or &#8220;gross.&#8221;</p>
<p>When a child types in a term like &#8220;ocean&#8221; KidZui offers a list of related terms as well, to guide further exploration. If a child types in a search term or a Web address that has been banned from the KidZui universe, a message appears saying &#8220;This page isn&#8217;t available on KidZui, but your parents can add it for you.&#8221; This applies not only to terms typed into KidZui&#8217;s own search bar, but also to terms a child enters at sites like Wikipedia or in the search boxes embedded in other sites. The main pages of Google and Yahoo can&#8217;t be summoned.</p>
<p>If a search or Web address is new to KidZui, a different message appears promising that it will be reviewed.</p>
<p>I did find some holes in this system. For instance, I was able to get to The Wall Street Journal&#8217;s Web site and do an internal search on &#8220;Spitzer,&#8221; which turned up a story on the former New York governor&#8217;s sex scandal.</p>
<p>Parents can get detailed reports about the KidZui activities of each of their children and can tweak the content they can see by adding specific types of material, such as &#8220;athletic violence,&#8221; and approving or blocking specific Web sites.</p>
<p>For parents who want to allow limited Web use by their young children without constantly micromanaging their online activities, KidZui may be worth a try, but don&#8217;t expect it to be perfect.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Everyone can now be a video producer. YouTube and other Web sites are filled with short amateur videos created on typical home computers. Even print journalists like me have joined the trend. For the past couple of months, I&#8217;ve been recording brief video commentaries to post along with my columns on The Wall Street Journal&#8217;s Web site, WSJ.com.</p>
<p>But how, exactly, does one make such a video? I&#8217;ve had multiple readers ask me about how I do mine, so I thought I&#8217;d explain the process. Because the Journal employs professional producers who help me, the method I use isn&#8217;t a purely amateur experience. But most of it is the same as what anyone could do at home. <p>My method is pretty simple. Shortly after writing the columns each week, I sit down in front of a computer with a built-in video camera and record the commentary using the free software that comes with the computer. Then, using the same software, I convert the movie into a format our Web producers can use and upload it to them. They add titles and insert footage of any products I&#8217;m discussing.</p>
<p>I have recorded most of these videos in my home office in Maryland, using a desktop computer. But when I am on the road, I have used a laptop in hotel rooms from Las Vegas to New York City to Munich. At home, I use a professional microphone supplied by our producers, but on the road, I just use the laptop&#8217;s built-in mic. And I don&#8217;t use any special lighting.</p>
<p>In both settings, but especially in hotel rooms, I make sure the parts of the room that get in the shot aren&#8217;t too messy or distracting. Nobody wants to see a used room-service tray in one of these videos.</p>
<p>So far, I have done all my videos on a Macintosh, either an iMac desktop or a MacBook Pro laptop, and I&#8217;ve used Apple&#8217;s built-in iMovie software &#8212; mostly because it is simple and reliable, and produces good videos despite unpredictable conditions. It also easily exports the videos into QuickTime files, an Apple format that our producers &#8212; who also use Macs &#8212; can easily use. YouTube can use this format, too, along with other formats.</p>
<p>Such videos could also be created on a Windows computer that has a camera and accompanying video software. I have tested this on a Hewlett-Packard Pavilion dv6000 laptop with a built-in camera, using the free Windows Movie Maker program in Windows XP. The videos recorded fine, and I was able to save them in Microsoft&#8217;s Windows Media Video format, which the Journal producers &#8212; or sites like YouTube &#8212; can use.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, on this particular H-P computer, I&#8217;ve had problems with the video and audio being out of sync, an obstacle I&#8217;ve never encountered on the Macs. But I assume that doesn&#8217;t happen on all, or even most, Windows machines.</p>
<p>My videos are very basic: It&#8217;s just me talking into the camera and occasionally holding up a product. I&#8217;m not moving around much, or including other people. I don&#8217;t usually record multiple takes, and I don&#8217;t have time to do editing. Because I don&#8217;t care much about production values, there are shadows and the sound is hardly perfect. But you could use the same hardware and software to make more elaborate videos with better lighting and sound. Both iMovie and Windows Movie Maker allow extensive editing, the use of video effects and the addition of titles and transitions.</p>
<p>You could also buy better video software. For instance, our producers in New York edit my videos using off-the-shelf Macs running a high-end Apple video program called Final Cut Studio, which costs $1,299. A simpler version, Final Cut Express, costs $299. On Windows, there are video programs like Adobe Premiere Pro, for $849, or the simpler Premiere Elements, for $99.</p>
<p>What if you want to use a digital camcorder or the video function of a digital still camera, to shoot your videos? Well, you can easily do that and just import your videos from the camera into your Mac or Windows computer using a cable and most video software.</p>
<p>After you&#8217;ve imported the video and saved it to your hard disk, you can either directly upload it to YouTube or another Web site or edit it first before uploading.</p>
<p>While my computers have built-in cameras, if yours don&#8217;t you can buy an add-on, such as the external iSight camera made by Apple. For Windows computers, Logitech and others make a variety of external cameras. If you use a Mac, I also recommend a small program called iGlasses, a terrific $8 utility that can tweak Apple cameras to compensate for poor lighting or to enhance images. <p>Two other tips: Remember to look into the camera, not at the screen, so you don&#8217;t appear to be looking away from the viewer. And if you wear glasses, as I do, turn off the screen, so it doesn&#8217;t reflect in your glasses.</p>
