			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The war of the Web browsers has taken another turn with the release of a major new version of Mozilla Firefox, the No. 2 browser in market share, but No. 1 in the hearts of many of the most knowledgeable computer users.</p>

<p>This new edition of Firefox is the third big new browser release this year, following new editions of Microsoft’s (MSFT) Internet Explorer and Apple’s (AAPL) Safari. Unlike Firefox, these two browsers come bundled with the two major computer platforms, Windows and Mac. By contrast, Mozilla must convince users to download Firefox, which comes in essentially identical versions for both systems. And it has done a reasonably good job, garnering by most estimates around 23% market share, versus between 60% and 70% for IE, which is by far the leader. Meanwhile, Google (GOOG)—a former Firefox supporter—has joined the battle with its nascent Chrome browser, which so far runs only on Windows, but is due on the Mac one day and is to morph into a whole new operating system next year. And there are other very capable browsers with small user bases, the most notable of which is Opera.</p>
<p>I’ve been using Firefox since its inception years ago, and have been testing this latest iteration, version 3.5, since it emerged June 30. I can continue to recommend it as a fine way to surf the Web. The new version is improved, and worked very well for me on both my Windows and Macintosh computers.</p>
<p>But, in this round of the war, Mozilla’s product no longer stands out as clearly superior, for two reasons. First, Firefox has lost its traditionally biggest advantage: greater speed than its rivals. While Firefox 3.5 is about twice as fast as the previous version 3.0, and handily beat Internet Explorer 8 in my tests, it lagged behind both Safari 4.02 and the beta edition of Chrome 2.0 a bit in most test scenarios. Overall, Safari was fastest in most of my tests, both on Mac and Windows (yes, Apple makes a little-known version of Safari for Windows).</p>
<p>In fact, Mozilla no longer is claiming to be the fastest browser. It now prefers to say it is one of what it calls the “modern” browsers, along with Safari and Chrome, whose under-the-hood technologies make them better at handling a growing breed of sophisticated Internet-based applications that mimic traditional computer programs like photo editors and word processors and spreadsheets.</p>
<p>Second, this version of Firefox has relatively few new features, and some of them are merely catch-ups to those introduced earlier by Microsoft and Apple. Most notable among these is a private browsing mode, first popularized in Safari, and greatly expanded in IE, which allows you to traverse Web sites without leaving traces on your computer to show what you’ve been doing.</p>
<p>Mozilla says its main goal from now on will be to turn Firefox into the ideal platform for running Web-based applications. It shares the belief, also fervently embraced by Google, that consumers will gradually migrate away from programs stored on their computers’ hard disks to those stored in “the Cloud,” the industry’s term for the servers that run the Internet.</p>
<p>To show this, the new Firefox can do a few new tricks, like streaming video directly from Web pages without requiring plug-ins like Adobe’s (ADBE) Flash. Alas, this works only with obscure video formats little used on the Web at the moment.</p>
<p>Firefox 3.5 does include some new features, in addition to private browsing. It can pinpoint your location, so that any properly configured Web site can serve up locally relevant content. It has a nice option that lets you “forget” any Web page in your history, wiping out all traces you’ve been there, even if you neglected to turn on private browsing mode beforehand. And it can recover your open tabs after a crash.</p>
<p>Also, Firefox continues to lead its rivals in the number and variety of third-party add-ons that enhance browsing in myriad ways, such as adding features to sites like Twitter or making bookmarking easier.</p>
<p>As for speed, I tested Firefox 3.5 against its main rivals by timing how long it took to launch into the same home page, and how long it took to completely load popular Web sites like Facebook and YouTube. I tested how long it took to completely load folders containing numerous sports and news sites simultaneously. I also ran an industry benchmark test that measures the browsers’ speed at handling an important Web language called JavaScript. I did these tests on the same home network on both a Dell (DELL) and an Apple computer.</p>
<p>While Firefox won a few of these tests, Safari and Chrome won more of them. In most cases, the speed differences weren’t large, except in the case of IE, which was dramatically slower than the others. But this is the first new version of Firefox I’ve tested that didn’t win most of the tests.</p>
<p>Firefox is still a great Web browser, and still much faster than its main rival, Internet Explorer. But its edge is being eroded.</p>

TuneUp Media and MusicBrainz Picard aim to clean up and properly label personal digital-music collections.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>My digital music collection is over a decade old, and it’s as disorderly as a drawer of mismatched socks.</p>
<p>Many songs are missing the correct album titles and cover art—or just show up in Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iTunes with mysterious names like “Track04.” Over the years I’ve used several programs to import and buy music, resulting in wild inconsistencies in my collection. I’ve got songs by Beyoncé (with accent), Beyonce (without accent), Beyoncé Knowles (with accent) and Beyonce Knowles (without accent).</p>
<p>Several companies have developed programs that tap into vast databases of songs to tame music collections. I’ve been testing one by San Francisco startup TuneUp Media that’s available to download online and buy in Apple’s stores. While I was reluctant to pay $19.95 for a year’s subscription to a service I reckon should be in iTunes for free, TuneUp has largely delivered on its promise to scrub my music collection with minimal effort, making sure tracks were properly titled and adding extras like album cover art.</p>
<p>TuneUp’s greatest asset is that it works seamlessly with iTunes (for Mac and PC). With TuneUp hooked on to the right side of the iTunes program, you drag “dirty,” or mislabeled, songs into a box identified by a spray bottle of cleaner. The software identifies songs by taking clues from information you’ve embedded in your music, as well as sampling the song’s digital fingerprint. TuneUp looks for a match to those clues in a database of songs maintained by Sony Corp.’s (SNE) Gracenote.</p>
<p>Some matches are a slam dunk, but almost half of my collection proved to be problematic. Of the 500 most-played songs in my pop-oriented collection, TuneUp found “matches” for songs across 79 albums and “likely matches” for songs across 209 albums. It couldn’t identify 10 songs. The company says it counts matches as a 90% or higher chance of a match, and “likely” as at least 75% chance of a match. Songs with a likelihood under 75% are labeled “not found.”</p>
<p>TuneUp gives you the chance to review each of the matches before it adjusts your catalog. (It comes with an undo button.) Accepting all of the sure matches is easy enough, but slogging through the likely matches is troublesome. TuneUp gives you only the option to accept or reject its one recommendation after listening to the file, if you want.I worried that I might be inadvertently mislabeling a song, but haven’t yet found evidence of errors in my collection. The company says it cut out alternative matches to simplify the cleaning process, but is working on adding them to future releases of the software.</p>
<p>Once a song has been cleaned by TuneUp, it is given a consistent name, track number, album cover and other helpful information, such as the year it was released. Now I’ve got songs by just Beyoncé (with accent) and almost all of my songs feature the album cover art that looks so nifty on iPhone screens. The software assigns your songs genre identifications, which can be handy for matching music to your mood. Most of the classifications aren’t terms I would have come up with: Beyoncé is dubbed “urban crossover,” while Michael Jackson is either “disco” or “other pop” depending on the era—but at least they’re consistent. You also can tell TuneUp not to change any specific part of a song’s existing catalog listing, including genre.</p>

<p>TuneUp takes a few seconds, depending on your computer and Internet speed, to identify and re-classify each song. Attempting to scrub a whole collection—mine has more than 10,000 songs—can be a lengthy affair. The company suggests cleaning 500 songs at a time, but you can do many more than that if you leave it running over night.</p>
<p>I tried out a free competitor to TuneUp called MusicBrainz Picard, which matches songs based on a database collected by a swarm of Internet users, rather than one particular company. TuneUp and MusicBrainz, which is run by a nonprofit, are as different as Britannica and Wikipedia in their approaches to cataloging information.</p>
<p>The MusicBrainz approach to building a user-generated database is powerful and has been tapped by companies such as the BBC and Amazon.com (AMZN) to improve the way they keep track of music on their sites. Some of my songs that TuneUp couldn’t identify, such as the song “This Way” by hip hop group Dilated Peoples, were a breeze for MusicBrainz. To date, MusicBrainz has about 700,000 “releases” (such as whole albums) and 8,000,000 individual “tracks” in its database.</p>
<p>But MusicBrainz’s database has limitations, such as the inability to catalog album-cover images or song lyrics, both of which are copyrighted material. The free Picard program lets you tap the MusicBrainz database from your own computer. Serious music fans will be attracted to Picard because it is more precise than TuneUp; Picard guides you to choose from a variety of options when it isn’t certain of a match. But the software is rudimentary and requires concentration and time to use. Picard also doesn’t connect directly into iTunes’ catalog. To use it with iTunes, you have to first clean up all of your music files with Picard and then re-import your songs into iTunes.</p>
<p>I recommend TuneUp for the average music fan who might view cleaning up a music collection as the sort of task that shouldn’t take much longer than one rainy Sunday afternoon. Picard is better for people for whom maintaining an orderly music collection is a never-ending project.</p>
<p>TuneUp comes with a feature called “Tuniverse,” which fills the right side of the screen with information related to whatever song iTunes is playing at the time. That information includes YouTube videos, biographical details from Wikipedia, Google (GOOG) News, music recommendations from Amazon and tickets from StubHub to coming concerts in your area. While I initially worried Tuniverse would feel like added advertising on the screen, I’ve come to enjoy the extra information. And once again, I was left wondering why Apple hasn’t built these capabilities directly into iTunes. I, for one, learned from Tuniverse that Beyoncé has a concert in San Francisco next week, and I just might buy a ticket.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Apple Inc.&#8217;s iPhone has been a smashing success, redefining the smart-phone market and creating a new hand-held computing platform that has attracted over 50,000 third-party apps, or software programs, in less than a year. With its nearly identical sibling, the iPod Touch, it has sold a combined 40 million units since June 2007, when the computer maker plunged into the phone business.</p>
<p>But the iPhone is drawing increasing competition from entrenched smart-phone makers anxious to emulate the upstart. The most significant of these is Palm&#8217;s (PALM) impressive new Pre, which is off to a good start with an estimated 100,000 or so units sold since it launched on June 6.</p>

<p>So, like a shark, Apple (AAPL) must keep moving. This week, it is introducing two new products designed to consolidate and increase its position as the leader in this new generation of hand-held computers. I&#8217;ve been testing both and I like them a lot, with some minor caveats.</p>
<p>One of the new products is a refreshed model of the iPhone itself, called the iPhone 3G S. It looks the same, but offers more speed, more memory, more battery life, and a few new features, including video recording and a better camera for still photos.</p>
<p>The second is OS 3.0, the third version of the iPhone&#8217;s operating system, which comes on the 3G S and also can be installed on all prior iPhones and Touches. It includes a much longer list of added features, some innovative and some long overdue catch-ups to other phones. These include such widely requested capabilities as cut, copy and paste; systemwide searching; a wider virtual keyboard; and a feature called MMS that allows users to send photos and videos directly to other phones without using email.</p>

<p>Apple last week also made a bold business move to complement these new products. It decided to keep making the current model, the iPhone 3G, and to slash its price by 50%, to $99. That&#8217;s an unheard-of price tag for a pocket computer of this power and versatility, and gives millions of additional consumers a reason to choose the iPhone instead of a competitor.</p>
<p>In my tests, both the new phone and the new operating system performed well, with a few small exceptions. I believe the two strengthen the iPhone platform, make it likely the iPhone will continue to attract scads of apps, and are good for consumers.</p>
<p>But I also regard these changes as more evolutionary than revolutionary, and I don&#8217;t think this latest iPhone is as compelling an upgrade for the average user as the 3G model was last year for owners of the original 2007 iPhone.</p>
<p>Current iPhone owners can get an improved product by merely sticking with their existing phones and upgrading to the feature-laden new operating system, which is free (it costs $10 for iPod Touch owners), rather than shelling out at least $199 for the new iPhone 3G S. And many new iPhone buyers can opt for the $99 3G model, which is not only cheaper, but also greatly improved by the new OS 3.0.</p>
<p>On the other hand, power users will crave the new model&#8217;s much-better performance, battery life, storage and other features. And some will want the new model because, unlike the current model, it&#8217;s capable of handling a new cellular network feature that, in the next few years, will offer double the current data speeds.</p>
<p>The new, free operating system is available for download starting June 17. The iPhone 3G S will go on sale June 19 for $199 for a version with 16 gigabytes of memory, and $299 for 32 gigabytes of memory. Those memory capacities are double the amounts offered on the previous model last year at the same prices, and far exceed the built-in memory on most competing smart phones.</p>
<p>These prices are for new U.S. customers on the AT&#038;T network, plus current owners who are eligible for what AT&#038;T (T) calls a &#8220;standard&#8221; upgrade. If you already own an older iPhone, you could pay $200 more to upgrade, depending on how far along you are in your two-year service contract and how much you spend monthly. But AT&#038;T, stung by criticism in recent days, has just decided to offer the lower, new-customer prices at launch to iPhone 3G owners eligible for upgrades at any time up to Sept. 30 of this year, even if they were originally told they&#8217;d have to pay the $200 premium.</p>
<p>Before I detail the new features and how they worked in my tests, let me state up-front what the new iPhone and its new operating system don&#8217;t deliver. The iPhone still lacks a physical keyboard. It still can&#8217;t run more than one third-party app at a time, as the Pre does. Its otherwise excellent Web browser still can&#8217;t play videos created in Adobe&#8217;s Flash software, which is widely used on the Web. And it still isn&#8217;t available on any U.S. carrier besides AT&#038;T.</p>
<p>Also, AT&#038;T won&#8217;t enable MMS until late this summer, even though dozens of other iPhone carriers in other countries are doing so immediately. And AT&#038;T hasn&#8217;t set a date by which it will offer tethering, a new iPhone feature that allows the device to be used as a modem for a laptop. Other carriers in other countries are allowing this right away.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a rundown of the most important new features of both the new hardware and software, and how they performed in my tests.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">The iPhone 3G S</h5>
<p><strong>Speed:</strong> To me, this is the most important feature of the new iPhone 3G S. In fact, the &#8220;S&#8221; in the name stands for speed. During my week of testing, the new model proved dramatically snappier in every way than my iPhone 3G. Its processor is 50% faster than in the prior model, and it sports a new graphics chip.</p>
<p>Applications opened much more quickly. Web pages loaded far faster. The camera was ready to use almost instantly. And I never once saw the occasional, annoying iPhone behavior where you strike a key while typing and it sits there, seemingly stuck, before you can continue.</p>
<p>Cellular-data speeds were about the same, but in repeated testing on different Wi-Fi networks, the 3G S racked up speeds 30% to 50% faster than on the 3G running at the same time on the same networks.</p>
<p><strong>Battery Life:</strong> On my 3G iPhone, I usually could make it through the day, but it was often a close call, with the battery indicator winding up in the red. By contrast, the new model did much better, never hitting the red zone and rarely requiring interim charging at the office or in the car, even though, because I was testing it, I was pounding it much harder than usual, making more voice calls, playing lots of videos and music, trying numerous apps, constantly downloading email from two accounts, and syncing two calendars over the air.</p>
<p>Apple claims about the same talk time for the new model as on the old, and about the same Web-surfing time over the cellular network. But it says the 3G S gets about 50% more battery life when playing videos or surfing the Internet over Wi-Fi and 25% more time &#8212; an astounding 30 hours &#8212; for continuous music playback.</p>
<p><strong>Memory:</strong> With the new 32-gigabyte model, I was able to store over 3,000 songs, more than 1,600 photos, 74 videos, 67 applications, 400 emails, nearly 1,000 contacts, months of calendar data, and dozens of documents, and still have 5 gigabytes left over&mdash;more than most phones offer out of the box.</p>
<p><strong>Camera:</strong> The new model&#8217;s camera has a 3 megapixel resolution, up from 2 megapixels, and has autofocus and a feature that lets you tap the screen to change the focus to an object or person in the background of a shot. It still lacks zoom or a flash, though it does better in low light. It also has a macro feature for close-up shots. In my tests, all of this worked, but I didn&#8217;t think the pictures it took were dramatically better than those on the old model, and it can&#8217;t compete with phones like Nokia&#8217;s (NOK) new $700 N97, which has a 5-megapixel camera with zoom.</p>
<p><strong>Video:</strong> The new video recorder worked well, even in low light, and lets you post videos directly to YouTube, among other places. You can also trim your videos right on the phone. This all worked well, but the videos aren&#8217;t high definition, and pale in comparison to those on the latest HD model of the popular $229 Flip pocket camcorder.</p>
<p><strong>Voice Control:</strong> By simply holding down the new iPhone&#8217;s home button, you can dial contacts and control music playback by uttering voice commands. The phone will even tell you which song is playing. Like most voice-recognition systems, this one isn&#8217;t perfect. But it worked most of the time.</p>

<p><strong>Compass:</strong> I don&#8217;t consider this important for most users, but it did work when I was walking or driving. It can orient maps in the direction you&#8217;re heading.</p>
<p><strong>Small Touches:</strong> You can optionally turn on a new battery indicator that shows a precise percentage of battery life left. The screen has a new coating that resists oil and grease from fingerprints.</p>
<p><strong>Downsides:</strong> The new phone crashed on me twice during my tests. Once, the voice-control feature killed the sound on the built-in iPod, requiring a reboot. But I couldn&#8217;t replicate this problem. Another time, the phone froze while downloading a TV show. Apple blamed this on a prerelease server issue, and it didn&#8217;t happen again.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">iPhone Operating System 3.0</h5>
<p><strong>Copy, Cut and Paste:</strong> Apple is late with this common feature, but it&#8217;s the best implementation I&#8217;ve seen on a phone. In a text page, you just double tap on a word, and it is selected with little handles around it that let you expand or contract the selected area. Then, you just click on a copy icon that pops up over the selection. To paste, you tap elsewhere in the page, or even in another app, and a paste icon pops up. Click that icon, and the selected text is pasted in. It worked well in all my tests.</p>
<p>The feature works a bit differently for some Web pages, where you hold down your finger over an area and it selects a whole block of text, like a paragraph, but still has the handles that allow adjusting the selection. It also allows copying and pasting photos. You can also just select a word or a section or a whole page of text and delete it. And if you want to undo a paste, just shake the phone.</p>
<p>Some Web pages and third-party apps don&#8217;t yet support this feature, but most do.</p>
<p><strong>Search:</strong> Before, you could search only in the Contacts app. Now, there are search features in Mail, Calendar, the built-in iPod and Notes. And there is a way to search the whole phone at once. You just hit the home button, slowly, twice, and a special search screen appears. Type in any phrase, and it brings up every instance in multiple apps.</p>
<p>This is another catch-up feature, but it works well. For instance, when I searched for the word &#8220;Phil,&#8221; it brought up songs by Phil Collins, a note about Philadelphia, calendar items mentioning people named Phil or Phillips, emails to or from people with those names, and contacts for people named Phil or Phillips.</p>
<p>In email, the search function will even find messages that aren&#8217;t on your phone but that are stored on the servers of certain email services. For instance, I was able to almost instantly find emails from two years ago stored on Google&#8217;s (GOOG) Gmail.</p>
<p>One downside &#8212; in email, search looks for words only in email headers, not in the body of the messages.</p>
<p><strong>Landscape Keyboard:</strong> In older iPods, the only built-in program that supported a wider, landscape keyboard, which is better for thumb typing, was the Web browser. Now, you can turn the phone horizontally and use a landscape keyboard in the Mail, Messages and Notes programs as well.</p>
<p><strong>Find My iPhone:</strong> If you belong to Apple&#8217;s $99 a year MobileMe service, you can now locate a lost iPhone on a map on any computer, send the iPhone a message saying how to return it to you, and cause it to emit a beep, even if the sound is turned off. I tested this and it worked well. You can even remotely wipe all your data off the phone.</p>
<p><strong>Voice Memos:</strong> The OS includes a Voice Memo app that lets you dictate reminders or other messages, and then edit and email them. I found it worked well.</p>
<p><strong>Navigation:</strong> Another catch-up feature, turn-by-turn navigation with voice prompts, is also now supported. I tested this with a third-party app called Gokivo, and it did OK, though the developer admits to a prerelease bug I encountered.</p>
<p><strong>Auto-Authentication:</strong> In the new OS, the iPhone can remember your log-in credentials for commercial Wi-Fi hotspot services, so you don&#8217;t have to enter them again and again. Unfortunately, in my tests with the AT&#038;T Wi-Fi service, this failed repeatedly in several Starbucks (SBUX) shops. Apple blames a glitch in my prerelease phone&#8217;s SIM card.</p>
<p><strong>Push Notification:</strong> To make up for its lack of multitasking, the new iPhone OS has a feature where third-party apps can notify you of new events, like a sports score, or a new invitation to an online game. I tried this with a game called TapTap Revenge, and it worked fine.</p>
<p><strong>Stocks:</strong> The built-in stock application now has much more detailed data, including market cap, news headlines and price/earnings ratio for each stock.</p>
<p><strong>MMS and Tethering:</strong> I couldn&#8217;t test these useful features because my tests were all done on AT&#038;T, which hasn&#8217;t rolled them out.</p>
<p><strong>Minor Touches:</strong> You can now move an icon among screens with one continuous motion, instead of stopping at each screen. And there are two more screens to house icons. You can finally synchronize Notes with your PC or Mac. You also can now maintain both calendars and contacts synced wirelessly with online services and those synced via cable with your computer. And you can play games and transfer files wirelessly over Bluetooth with other iPods or Touches that are nearby.</p>
<p><strong>Bottom Line:</strong> Both the new iPhone and iPhone OS are packed with features that make a great product even better. But, for many users, the software may be enough of a boost to keep them from buying the new model.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Research on choosing colleges takes many forms, including visiting campuses and studying the schools&#8217; Web sites. But for a lot of high-school students and their parents, finding a centralized resource containing information about numerous schools still means buying one of the thick, costly printed guides to college that have been around for years. The Web versions of these books are surprisingly dry.</p>
<p>But there&#8217;s a new, free Web site that, while overseen by paid editors, is built on lively content submitted by current students at the colleges. The information isn&#8217;t just words and numbers, but includes numerous photos and videos for most schools. You also can create a small social network of people interested in the same schools or who share other common traits.</p>

<p>In other words, this is a college-information resource built for the age of YouTube and Facebook.</p>
<p>The site, <a href="http://Unigo.com" rel="external">Unigo.com</a>, costs nothing to use and supports itself with ads. Although it&#8217;s only a few months old, it already covers about 250 colleges and universities, and claims to average dozens of student-created reviews, photos and videos for each college. Its sophisticated search engine lets applicants comb all this material to find just what applies to them. For example, Unigo would let you see all content relevant to an Asian-American female applicant with conservative political views.</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve been testing Unigo, and I like it. In the sampling of college profiles I read, the site seems to have struck a good balance between the immediacy and candor of student submissions, and the professionalism needed to weed out wildly biased or inaccurate claims.</p>
<p>The site, founded by a 26-year-old who formerly created printed college guides, says it employs 19 full-time editors. This team uses information from a nationwide network of 300 representatives on campuses to create each college&#8217;s profile. Each representative rounds up contributions from others on campus, so that the site claims that over 15,000 students contributed to the profiles of the first 250 colleges.</p>
<p>Reviews, photos and videos can also be submitted out of the blue, and these are also eventually reviewed by the editors.</p>
<p>Each profile starts with a fairly long editor-written overview, liberally sprinkled with comments from students and accompanied by basic information, statistics and rankings.</p>
<p>But the heart of Unigo&#8217;s look at each college is student-created, in multiple forms. For instance, the site&#8217;s section on the University of Michigan includes 92 written student reviews, some running to thousands of words; 35 photos; 36 videos; and 10 student-written &#8220;documents.&#8221; The latter are often by campus journalists and cover things like athletics or critiques of nearby restaurants.</p>
<p>The videos are the most interesting part of Unigo, because they provide a look at current students and at the campus that isn&#8217;t often captured in standard guides. Most of the videos are fairly short, some only containing the answer to a single question like &#8220;What&#8217;s the best or worst thing about this school?&#8221; But others include opinions on issues like what kinds of students fit in best or worst on campus, or minitours of the campus or of typical dorms.</p>
<p>One student video I watched was a walk down the main street of the college town. Others are reflections on the school&#8217;s reputation, or on why the student chose one school over another. Another was about a student&#8217;s biggest freshman-year mistake (he took Classical Mythology, found it boring, didn&#8217;t do the work and flunked the course.)</p>
<p>I stumbled on a rap video submitted by a student from Clarkson University, which doesn&#8217;t yet have a review on Unigo, in which the rapper comments on the alumni, the architecture and the weather at the Potsdam, New York, school.</p>
<p>Unigo also contains articles on general topics, such as how to decide what size of college is best for you, and how to get the most out of a college tour.</p>
<p>While the editors ban personal attacks and nudity, they don&#8217;t bar negative comments. Unigo deliberately seeks out pro and con opinions. Many of the student submissions are enthusiastically positive, but plenty are negative comments on campus social life, the costs, the food, the faculty, the dorms and other topics.</p>
<p>The site feels surprisingly full for such a young venture, but it has some quirks and issues. Coverage is uneven. For instance, Vassar College in New York boasts 117 reviews and 42 videos, while the much larger University of Kansas has only 45 reviews and three videos. Finding the detailed search feature can be clumsy, because it&#8217;s not obvious on the home page. You can&#8217;t generate a quick comparison among colleges, and the site lacks any parent-oriented sections, although parents are free to use it.</p>
<p>Finally, there are just loads of colleges that aren&#8217;t yet included. The first 250 schools were &#8220;seeded,&#8221; with months of research and solicitation of student content. Unigo is confident it can get more schools, but only time will tell.</p>
<p>Still, Unigo is a good example of how user-generated content can do a lot to enhance an important topic, and still keep editorial standards.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Wi-Fi wireless Internet connectivity has become nearly ubiquitous. Whether you&#8217;re at home, in a coffee shop, or even on some commercial airliners, you can get online with a Wi-Fi-equipped laptop, smart phone or portable game machine.</p>
<p>Now, Wi-Fi is making its way into your car. A small California company, Autonet Mobile, has teamed up with Chrysler and others to sell a service that floods any brand or model of car or truck with Wi-Fi Internet connectivity that can be used by multiple passengers and devices simultaneously. It&#8217;s a dealer-installed option on Chrysler vehicles, but Chrysler dealers, and some independent auto electronic shops, will install it on any brand of car for a fee.</p>

<p>The system works via a special wireless router, mounted in the trunk or rear cargo area, that draws Internet connectivity from cellphone towers and then converts it into an in-car Wi-Fi signal with a range of 100 feet. This router looks like a military device, because it is ruggedized to survive jolts and vibrations, and is shielded to avoid interference with the car&#8217;s electronics or with cellphone calls.</p>
<p>As long as they have built-in Wi-Fi, the laptops and smart phones used in the car don&#8217;t need any add-on hardware or software to use Autonet. To them, it looks like any other Wi-Fi signal. And no special car antenna is needed; the router uses its own large antennas.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing Autonet Mobile in a rented Saturn Vue SUV in Washington, D.C., and its suburbs, and found it worked well for most basic Internet tasks like email and Web surfing. The router turns on when the car does, and the Wi-Fi signal shows up about 30 seconds later. However, Autonet is relatively pokey. It&#8217;s too slow to be reliable for streaming video longer than brief YouTube clips, or for smooth video chatting.</p>
<p>Perhaps the biggest downside of in-car Wi-Fi is that it provides one more potential distraction for drivers. The company says the service is only for passengers, not drivers, but there&#8217;s no technical barrier to a driver using it.</p>

<p>Of course, drivers already can court danger this way by using cellphone wireless connectivity on a laptop, iPhone, BlackBerry or other connected device. And that raises another question: Since you can already connect to the Internet from a car with a smart phone or a cellular data card for a laptop, why would you want Autonet?</p>
<p>There are three reasons. First, cellular Internet access is typically tied to a single device at a time. But Autonet&#8217;s Wi-Fi service works just like Wi-Fi in your house: Multiple people with multiple devices can use it at the same time. In fact, the company envisions that the service&#8217;s primary use will be to allow children in the back seat to use laptops for social networking, online games or homework; and multiple adult passengers to conduct online business or research routes and destinations.</p>
<p>Second, the monthly fees can be lower, at least for laptops. A typical cellular data card for a single laptop costs $60 a month. But Autonet&#8217;s service starts at $29 a month for the entire car, regardless of how many devices are being used. A premium plan costs $59. The plans differ by how much data you are allowed to consume monthly. And Autonet requires no special laptop cards or software.</p>
<p>Lastly, the company claims that it has invented a technology that keeps the connection steadier while moving than the typical direct cellular connection. Although some videos froze on me, I never lost Autonet&#8217;s Internet connection, whether moving slowly through downtown D.C. or moving faster on suburban highways and streets.</p>
<p>In my tests, with a laptop and an iPhone, Autonet&#8217;s speeds ranged from around 100 kilobits per second to around 500 kbps &#8212; far slower than a typical cable Internet service in a home. My average speed was between 400 kbps and 450 kbps.</p>
<p>There are some other drawbacks. First, the router costs $499, though that will soon drop to $399 in a holiday price promotion. Second, you have to sign at least a one-year contract, even if you pay monthly. Third, your Internet usage is limited. The $29 plan gets you just 1 gigabyte of data a month, while the $59 plan gets you 5 gigabytes. That should be plenty for most typical users, but not for those with large appetites for data.</p>
<p>These service fees are all-inclusive. You don&#8217;t have to pay anything to any cellphone carrier. But there is also a $35 &#8220;activation fee,&#8221; whose justification is murky, and installation costs are estimated at $50 to $75.</p>
<p>For security, you can set Autonet up with a password, but it doesn&#8217;t yet use the most advanced version of Wi-Fi security. The company says that, while it can track and manage your Internet connection, it cannot determine the content of what you are doing online.</p>
<p>Finally, because the router is hard-mounted, you can&#8217;t remove it for use in, say, a hotel room or second car.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re willing to invest in the router and can tolerate the slow speeds, Autonet might be what you want &#8212; as long as you can resist using it while driving.</p>

<p>I have been testing the G1 extensively, in multiple cities and in multiple scenarios. In general, I like it and consider it a worthy competitor to the iPhone. Both devices run on fast 3G phone networks and include Wi-Fi. Both have smart-touch interfaces and robust Web browsers. Both have the ability to easily download third-party apps, or programs.</p>
<p>But the two devices have different strengths and weaknesses, and are likely to attract different types of users.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;ve been lusting after the iPhone&#8217;s functionality, but didn&#8217;t like its virtual keyboard or its user interface or its U.S. carrier, <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=t'>AT&#038;T</a>, the G1 may be just the ticket for you. But it does have some significant downsides.</p>
<p>By far, the G1&#8217;s biggest differentiator is that it has a physical keyboard, which is revealed by sliding open the screen. The keyboard proved only fair in my tests, with keys that are too flat and that can be hard to see in bright light, and with a bulge in the body on the right side that you have to reach over to type. But, for the many people who can&#8217;t stomach typing on glass, the G1 keyboard will be a welcome sight. It&#8217;s complemented by a BlackBerry-like trackball for navigation.</p>

<p>The G1 has a removable battery and uses removable, expandable memory cards. And it&#8217;s even a bit cheaper than its Apple (AAPL) rival: $179 versus $199. Its data plan also costs less &#8212; $25 a month versus $30 &#8212; and includes 400 free text messages, which cost extra on the iPhone. There&#8217;s also a $35 plan that includes unlimited text messages. And both plans include free use of T-Mobile&#8217;s Wi-Fi hotspots.</p>
<p>The G1 has a slick, clever touch interface to go along with its keyboard, and it includes a powerful new operating system. The operating system, called Android, was built by Google (GOOG). It is slated to appear on other phones over time, though it likely will look different on other devices because it is fully open to modification by other companies.</p>
<p>On the G1, the touch interface is fast and smooth. Programs appear when you drag up a tab at the bottom of the screen, and notifications of new messages can be read by simply dragging down the top bar of the screen.</p>
<p>You get much more flexibility in organizing your desktop than on the iPhone. In addition to placing icons for programs there, you can add individual contacts, music playlists, folders, Web pages and more. You just press on the screen for a longer-than-usual time, and a list of items you can add appears. It also has a higher-resolution camera than the iPhone, but like the Apple phone, it can&#8217;t shoot video.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s also much easier to place a phone call on the G1 than on the iPhone. You can just start typing a contact name or phone number while on the home screen, sparing you the need to enter the phone or contacts program. And there&#8217;s a virtual phone keypad that allows you to avoid opening the physical keyboard just to dial a number. It&#8217;s also much easier to jump to the top and bottom of long lists.</p>
<p>The G1&#8217;s Web browser, built on the same technology as the iPhone&#8217;s, worked well at rendering scores of common sites in my tests. You can either pan around pages with your finger, or choose to view the whole page at once and zero-in on a section by moving a small rectangle around.</p>
<p>This first Android phone, which was largely designed by Google and built by Taiwan-based HTC, also includes some key features Apple omitted. These include a limited ability to copy and paste text, and the ability to send photos directly to other phones without relying on email, a common phone feature called MMS, or Multimedia Messaging Service. And, unlike AT&#038;T (T), T-Mobile (DT) will even allow users to legally unlock the phone after 90 days and start using it on another carrier, provided you pay a hefty early-termination fee.</p>

<p>In my battery tests, the G1 lasted through the day, but I had to charge it every night. That&#8217;s better than the initial battery life on the current iPhone, though in fairness, Apple has improved the iPhone&#8217;s battery life through software updates, and I found them to be about the same for mixed use.</p>
<p>In my talk-time test, the G1 got just under its claimed five hours, about 19 minutes better than the iPhone.</p>
<p>There are two email programs: one for Google&#8217;s Gmail, another for all other email services. There&#8217;s an instant-messaging program that works with multiple services. There&#8217;s one program for accessing Google&#8217;s YouTube service and another for Google Maps. The G1&#8217;s Google Maps program even has a feature, coming soon as well to the iPhone, that offers photographic street views of certain locations. But the G1, unlike the iPhone, includes a compass that orients the street views as you walk.</p>
<p>The built-in download store for third-party programs, called Market, worked well in my tests. I was able to quickly download games, productivity programs, and other apps and, unlike Apple, Google says it isn&#8217;t blocking any programs.</p>
<p>However, the G1 also has downsides. It&#8217;s a chunky brick of a device. While it&#8217;s a bit narrower than the iPhone and feels OK in the hand, it&#8217;s almost 20% heavier and nearly 30% thicker. It also has a smaller screen and doesn&#8217;t accept standard stereo headphones.</p>
<p>The G1 also skimps on memory. It comes with only 1 gigabyte of storage, just one-eighth of what the base iPhone offers. To increase the G1&#8217;s memory, you have to lay out more money to buy a larger memory card.</p>
<p>The G1 also limits third-party applications to a paltry 128 megabytes of memory. At one point in my tests, after downloading a bunch of third-party programs, and adding songs and videos, the G1 warned me it was running out of room, a warning I have never seen on my heavily used iPhone.</p>
<p>Another downside for some users: The G1 is tightly tied to Google&#8217;s online services. While you can use non-Google email and IM services, the only way you can get contacts and calendar items into the phone is to synchronize with Google&#8217;s online calendar and contacts services. In fact, you can&#8217;t even use the G1 without a Google user ID and password.</p>
<p>The G1 doesn&#8217;t allow the use of Microsoft&#8217;s Exchange service for email, contacts or calendar items, or any other company&#8217;s over-the-air synchronization for contacts and appointments.</p>
<p>In my tests, synchronizing with Gmail, and with Google&#8217;s contacts and calendar applications, was smooth and fast. So, the G1 may be great for dedicated Google users, but not so good for folks who rely on competing calendar and contacts services from, say, Yahoo (YHOO) or Microsoft (MSFT). Future Android phones may not be so tightly tied to Google services, but the G1 is.</p>
<p>It also can&#8217;t synchronize any data at all directly with a PC or Mac. For instance, it can&#8217;t sync with Microsoft Outlook or Windows Media Player on a PC, with Apple&#8217;s iCal or Address Book programs on a Mac, or with iTunes on either Windows or the Mac. It has no PC-based synchronization software of its own, and it offers no way to automatically back up your settings, music, applications, videos or photos, either to a computer or to an online repository, though Google says it plans to add a backup feature.</p>
<p>To get Outlook or iCal data onto the G1, you must install add-on software. To get your songs, videos and photos onto the G1, you must plug the phone, or its memory card, into your computer and manually move the files over.</p>
<p>Overall, I found the G1&#8217;s user interface inferior to the iPhone&#8217;s. It lacks the iPhone&#8217;s ability to flick between multiple pictures and Web pages, or to zoom in and zoom out of a photo or Web page by simply using two fingers to &#8220;pinch&#8221; or expand the image. It also doesn&#8217;t automatically change the orientation of the screen from portrait to landscape simply by turning the phone.</p>
<p>Further, many common controls that are easily visible on the iPhone can be accessed on the G1 only by pressing a menu button or by using keyboard shortcuts you have to memorize. Examples are stopping the loading of a Web page or moving forward to the next Web page.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s also no on-screen keyboard even for quick tasks, such as typing Web addresses, so you&#8217;re constantly having to turn the phone and open the physical keyboard, which quickly becomes a pain.</p>
<p>The G1 also is a greatly inferior multimedia device when compared with the iPhone. Its music player, while adequate, isn&#8217;t as nice as the built-in iPod on the iPhone. And it lacks a video player altogether, though a rudimentary one can be downloaded from the Market. The G1 does come with a program for buying songs from Amazon (AMZN), which worked well in my tests.</p>
<p>And then there&#8217;s the network. Despite all the troubles AT&#038;T has experienced with its fast 3G network, which is still being built out, that company has 3G service for the iPhone and other devices in 320 U.S. metro areas. By contrast, T-Mobile offers 3G in just 20 U.S. metro areas. Eight more cities are due to come online by year end, which will still leave T-Mobile&#8217;s 3G coverage far behind that of AT&#038;T and <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=vz'>Verizon</a> (VZ), which will soon introduce its own iPhone competitor, the BlackBerry Storm.</p>
<p>I did 40 speed tests comparing the G1 and the iPhone to see how fast they could download a Web page over 3G. The tests, conducted in Scottsdale, Ariz., and Washington, D.C., showed the iPhone to be consistently faster, by an average of between 50 and 100 kilobytes per second, even though T-Mobile&#8217;s network was carrying much less traffic than AT&#038;T&#8217;s.</p>
<p>Overall, the G1 is a very good first effort, and a godsend for people who prefer physical keyboards or T-Mobile but want to be part of the new world of powerful pocket computers.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Perhaps the biggest disconnect in the digital landscape today is between the Internet and the TV set. Consumers have been buying big, new high-definition TVs in large numbers and, separately, are watching more and more video from online sources like YouTube, Hulu and iTunes. But the two trends have yet to merge. Despite the efforts of big names like <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=msft'>Microsoft</a> (MSFT), <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=aapl'>Apple</a> (AAPL) and <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=tivo'>TiVo</a> (TIVO), relatively few people are watching Internet video on their shiny new sets.</p>

<p>Now, two more set-top boxes have been launched to try to marry the Internet and the TV. Both adapters, from <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=sne'>Sony</a> (SNE) and Roku, worked well in my tests, but each has limitations. The problem is that one of the boxes supplies content from a wide range of Internet video sources, but only works on selected models of one brand of TV set; the other works on a wide variety of TVs, but only provides a single source of content.</p>
<p>Sony&#8217;s adapter is the Bravia Internet Video Link. This is a $300 module that attaches to certain Sony HDTV models. It can either be set up beside the TV or snapped onto the back of the set. Once it&#8217;s connected to your TV and to your home network for Internet access, a new menu appears on the TV allowing you a choice of videos from numerous online sources, including YouTube, Yahoo (YHOO), Blip. TV, Sports Illustrated, AOL, Wired, and the Web sites of CBS (CBS), Showtime and more.</p>
<p>Setting up the Bravia Internet Video Link was straightforward, even though it involved a welter of cables. There is no built-in Wi-Fi &#8212; you need either a cable or an add-on wireless adapter to connect to the Internet. The primary hookup to the TV is via a modern type of cable called HDMI, for High Definition Multimedia Interface.</p>
<p>I tested the Sony Link using the company&#8217;s most unusual HDTV set &#8212; a tiny, very costly model that uses a very thin, very vivid new screen technology called OLED, for Organic Light-Emitting Diode. This TV provided a spectacular picture, but it isn&#8217;t required to use the Sony module. The Link works on many larger, more common Sony sets with more common screens. It just doesn&#8217;t work on non-Sony TV sets.</p>

<p>The Sony module doesn&#8217;t have its own remote control. It uses the one that came with the TV. This makes for an awkward experience, because there are no standard play and pause buttons, and various other buttons on the remote meant to do one thing on the TV may do another when watching Internet video via the Link module.</p>
<p>Also, I found some of the Internet content to be disappointing. Many of the items labeled &#8220;movies&#8221; on various Internet channels were really just trailers, and some content was stale. For instance, some baseball news videos on Yahoo were weeks old.</p>
<p>However, Sony plans to make one of its feature films, &#8220;Hancock,&#8221; available through the Link module before it&#8217;s released on DVD. More important, it will be adding access to Amazon&#8217;s (AMZN) forthcoming video-streaming service, which promises to contain a wealth of full-length content.</p>
<p>The Netflix Player by Roku is much simpler. In fact, it was the simplest set-top box I have ever tested. It costs just $100 and does just one thing: It allows Netflix (NFLX) subscribers to view its movies and TV shows via the Internet on a television set instead of on a computer. It can&#8217;t get you any other video content from the Internet.</p>
<p>The Netflix player is a small, plain black box that works with most TVs, not just digital or high-definition models. It connects using both old-fashioned cables, like the kind used by many VCRs and older DVD players, or an HDMI cable.</p>
<p>Unlike the Sony, the Roku box includes both wireless and wired Internet connectivity, and has its own remote. While the box is capable of displaying high-definition content, the Netflix service isn&#8217;t currently streaming movies and TV shows in high definition, so you get varying quality, depending on your TV and Internet speed, up to DVD-type levels.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s no added monthly fee required to use the Roku box, but you must be a Netflix subscriber. The box merely displays the movies or TV shows you have placed in your Instant Queue on Netflix. You have to do this on your computer before viewing the videos on the Roku box. You can choose from around 12,000 streaming movies and TV shows, far fewer than the 100,000 titles Netflix makes available via DVD, but a sizable collection.</p>
<p>In my tests, the Roku box set up quickly and easily, the interface and remote were simple and effective, and the movies and TV shows I tested streamed quickly and without hesitation over my fast home Internet connection.</p>
<p>Both products are meant to promote sales of other things &#8212; Sony TVs and the Netflix movie-rental service. They do these tasks well, but neither is the breakthrough solution that will connect most TVs to most Internet video content.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Even with the advent of tabbed browsing, which allows you to keep multiple Web pages open in the same window, Web multitasking can be a pain. You have to constantly click back and forth among tabs if they contain fast-changing material you check often, like the status of your friends in social-networking services, or updates to news feeds.</p>
<p>Trying to share information with people on your Web-based networks can introduce another layer of digital jujitsu. It can be awkward to snag a photo or a snippet of text from one Web site and send it to a friend in a social network on another, or post it to your own blog.</p>

<p>But I&#8217;ve been testing a little-known Web browser that attempts to solve these problems. It&#8217;s called Flock, and it bills itself as &#8220;the social Web browser.&#8221; I found that it worked well, but it isn&#8217;t for everyone, and it has some important downsides.</p>
<p>Flock is a modified version of the excellent Firefox Web browser that tacks on some special features for social networkers and bloggers. It&#8217;s available free at <a href="http://www.flock.com" rel="external">flock.com</a> in essentially identical versions for Windows, Mac and Linux.</p>
<p>Flock adds a special vertical &#8220;sidebar&#8221; at the left of the browser that keeps your social networks, photo sites or news feeds visible at all times, regardless of what page you&#8217;re viewing in the main browser window.</p>
<p>For instance, with Flock, you can see that you have a new friend request in Facebook, or that a pal has posted new photos in Flickr, without clicking away from reading this column in the main browser window.</p>
<p>But, wait: There&#8217;s more. With one click, you can display a horizontal &#8220;media bar&#8221; across the top of the browser containing thumbnails of all of a friend&#8217;s photos or videos from a social-networking or photo site, again without changing what&#8217;s in the main browser window.</p>
<p>These two special bars also allow you to take action. For instance, you can just drag images and text from Web pages into the sidebar to share them with friends listed there. And any photo on the media bar can be quickly emailed or posted to a blog.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s also a &#8220;Web clipboard,&#8221; which can save any text, image or link from a site in the main window by merely dragging it to the Flock sidebar. Once an item is in this clipboard, it stays there until you delete it.</p>
<p>Flock has its own built-in blog editor, which allows you to quickly compose, edit and publish blog posts containing interesting items you encounter on the Web. And it creates a special personal Web page, called My World, which combines your social-networking updates, news feeds and photos.</p>
<p>I found Flock productive and fun to use. I tested its special sidebar with my Facebook, Flickr, Picasa and YouTube accounts, and with my favorite news feeds. I also used another of Flock&#8217;s features, which let me check my Gmail and Yahoo Web-mail accounts without navigating to their main pages. And I published several posts from within Flock to a test blog I maintain. All of this worked as promised.</p>
<p>In my tests, I used the latest edition of Flock, version 2.0, which is built on the new Firefox 3.0 browser. Even though this latest iteration of Flock is still in beta status, I found it to be quite stable.</p>
<p>But Flock isn&#8217;t for everyone, and it has some significant drawbacks. For one thing, you&#8217;d need a fairly large or high-resolution monitor to accommodate the Flock sidebar and media bar without reducing the size of the main browser window so much as to require too much scrolling. Even with a big or high-res screen, you will see fewer toolbar links and browser tabs than normally.</p>
<p>And, Flock has a busy, even frenetic, look that can be distracting and annoying. So many things are going on at once that it can be hard to concentrate on the main attraction: the Web page you are reading in the main window.</p>
<p>Also, while Flock does indeed spare you from clicking back and forth as often among tabs in your browser, it doesn&#8217;t entirely eliminate clicking around. Its sidebar can display only one type of information at a time &#8212; social networks and photo-sharing sites in one view, news feeds in a second, the clipboard in a third, and Web bookmarks in a fourth. So you&#8217;ll have to click the sidebar&#8217;s own controls fairly often to check all of these, or keep going to the special My World page in the main window.</p>
<p>Finally, Flock works with only certain social networking, photo-sharing and blogging services. While it does support most of the main ones, there are some glaring omissions. MySpace isn&#8217;t yet on the list, though it&#8217;s expected to be added next month. But Hotmail, Windows Live Spaces and SmugMug, among others, are missing. And it doesn&#8217;t support any instant-messaging services at all.</p>
<p>Flock does a good job at the tasks it sets for itself, but I would recommend it for only the heaviest and most impatient social networkers. For most others, Flock is overkill.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Thousands of feature-length documentary films are produced every year, but almost nobody gets a chance to see them. A few dozen are shown to small audiences at major film festivals, and a handful make it into theaters. For every blockbuster like &#8220;An Inconvenient Truth,&#8221; there are hundreds of documentaries that never find an audience.</p>
<p>Starting Thursday, however, there will be a new online service that aims to change all that. The service, called SnagFilms, allows anyone with a blog, a Web site, or even a page on a social-networking site, to open a virtual movie theater and show these documentaries, free. The virtual theater is a small widget that contains the film, and that can be embedded easily and quickly in a wide variety of popular social-networking services and blog platforms. No technical knowledge is needed.</p>

<p>Once a site or page owner &#8220;snags&#8221; a film in this way, visitors to the site can view it in a larger window that pops out from the widget. This window plays the film, displays some ads and provides links to charities or organizations related to the topic of the movie. The films can even be played in full-screen mode. Many also include links for buying a DVD of the film. All that&#8217;s missing is the popcorn.</p>
<p>These aren&#8217;t homemade, three-minute YouTube (GOOG) clips. Nearly all are feature-length, professionally produced documentaries, from both small independent filmmakers and well-known sources such as PBS and National Geographic.</p>
<p>The owner of the site or blog gets no direct revenue from posting the films. He or she is, in effect, donating space to support the film or the cause it highlights, a decision SnagFilms calls &#8220;filmanthropy.&#8221; But the filmmaker and SnagFilms do make money &#8212; splitting advertising revenue equally. And the charity or organization can make money, too, if viewers opt to donate. The filmmaker also can make money from DVD sales, paying SnagFilms an 8.5% commission.</p>
<p>I have been testing a prerelease version of the SnagFilms service and have posted SnagFilms widgets with no problems to Facebook, MySpace (News Corp), iGoogle, Netvibes, Blogger, Windows Live Spaces (MSFT) and Vox. Many more Web sites can house these widgets, including the vast number of blogs built on the popular WordPress and TypePad platforms.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s how it works. You just go to the SnagFilms Web site at <a href="http://www.snagfilms.com" rel="external">www.snagfilms.com</a>, select one or more of the 250 or so films available at launch and click the snag button. A menu pops up that lists numerous popular networking services and platforms. Clicking one will automatically post the SnagFilms widget of your choice on your page or site at one of these services. You can also simply view the films at the SnagFilms site.</p>

<p>Each widget includes an &#8220;info&#8221; button that takes you to a page on the SnagFilms site giving the details and background on the film. You can also leave comments here, rate the film, order the DVD and see recommendations for related films.</p>
<p>The system is viral, so you don&#8217;t have to start at the SnagFilms site. A Web surfer who sees a SnagFilms movie anywhere on the Web can spread it around just by clicking the snag button on every widget. The snag button allows the viewer to either host the film or to email a link to the film that will bring friends to the SnagFilms site to view or snag it.</p>
<p>SnagFilms is the brainchild of Ted Leonsis, a former top executive at America Online (TWS), who in recent years has become a documentary-film producer. He became frustrated with the distribution bottleneck for such films and arranged to take over AOL&#8217;s documentary site, TrueStories, and turn it into SnagFilms. He also is chairman of the board of a company, Clearspring, which created the film widgets.</p>
<p>At launch, the SnagFilms catalog includes well-known documentaries like &#8220;Super Size Me,&#8221; but also lesser-known films on a wide variety of topics, including college football, AIDS in Africa, politics, profiles of average people and tales of the New York Fire Department. One of my favorites was &#8220;Paper Clips,&#8221; the story of how a school in Tennessee learned about the Holocaust.</p>
<p>Filmmakers can submit movies to the site by sending an email to: <a href="mailto:submissions@snagfilms.com" rel="external">submissions@snagfilms.com</a>. SnagFilms says it doesn&#8217;t censor or edit the films, but won&#8217;t accept pornography or films deemed to encourage hate. It does have a selection process, so not all films submitted will make it onto the site. The company hopes to add more films soon.</p>
<p>I had only two gripes about SnagFilms. First, the films should be able to play inside the widget itself, with an option inside to play at larger sizes. Having to open a separate browser window is a pain. The company says it&#8217;s working on this.</p>
<p>Second, the initial catalog is light on documentaries from a conservative or probusiness perspective. But the company says it is &#8220;actively seeking to offer differing viewpoints&#8221; and will soon add &#8220;a number of films that are quite conservative in philosophy.&#8221;</p>
<p>SnagFilms is a great idea for getting documentary films in front of more people. It&#8217;s another example of how the Web is changing media distribution for the better.</p>

<p>Beginning this summer, as soon as next month, wireless Internet access will arrive in the passenger cabins of some commercial U.S. airliners.</p>
<p>On these Internet-equipped planes, any passenger with a Wi-Fi enabled laptop &#8212; or a cellphone with Wi-Fi &#8212; will be able to do almost everything he or she could do online at home or at the office. That includes surfing the Web, using email, having instant-messenger text chats, downloading and uploading files, and streaming video and audio.</p>
<p>In fact, I did all these things a few days ago on a test flight using the new system, called Gogo. During the flight from San Francisco to Denver, on a small test jet, I could operate online as if I were sitting at my desk, or in a Starbucks. I used Dell (DELL) and Apple (AAPL) laptops, a BlackBerry (RIMM), a Windows Mobile phone and an iPhone to perform all the most common online tasks, while soaring over majestic mountains and glorious national parks.</p>
<p>I sent and received emails on Microsoft (MSFT) Outlook and Apple Mail, including messages with hefty attachments. I conducted IM chats on AOL (TWX) Instant Messenger and Google (GOOG) Talk. Using all the major Web browsers, I called up dozens of Web sites, and watched video clips on Hulu and YouTube. I downloaded photos, songs, PDF files and Microsoft Office documents. I used all the Internet functions on the iPhone, and on the Wi-Fi-equipped BlackBerry and Windows Mobile phone.</p>
<p>One important caveat: Gogo is a data-only system. It doesn&#8217;t allow phone calls and will block all services that allow voice conversations to be made over the Internet.</p>
<p>Gogo will launch on three American Airlines (AMR) routes, likely in July. The first planes to use it will be American&#8217;s 15 Boeing 767s flying between New York and Los Angeles, San Francisco and Miami. Later in the year, Gogo will be available on all of Virgin America&#8217;s small number of routes, and possibly additional American routes, if the first deployment works well. It&#8217;s supplied to the airlines by a Denver-based company called Aircell, which says it is in negotiations to offer the Gogo service on several other major U.S. airlines by next year.</p>
<p>The Gogo service will cost a flat fee of $12.95 for flights of three hours or longer, and $9.95 for shorter trips. You log into Gogo as you would any commercial Internet service, registering on a special Web page. Aircell plans to allow advance sign-up, so you&#8217;d only have to enter an ID and password on the plane. No add-on software, hardware or cables are required.</p>
<p>A few Web functions will be offered free from Gogo, including access to the American Airlines Web site, to Frommer&#8217;s online travel guides and to a limited selection of articles from The Wall Street Journal.</p>
<p>Gogo isn&#8217;t the first in-plane Internet service. A few years ago, Lufthansa (LHA.MU) offered a satellite-based service from Boeing (BA), mainly on over-ocean flights, but it was canceled.</p>
<p>The service operates at respectable, if not blazing, speeds &#8212; similar to what you&#8217;d get on a cellular broadband service or a slow home DSL line. On my test flight, download speeds varied from 266 kilobits per second to about 1.4 megabits per second, with the most typical speeds hovering between 500 and 600 kbps. Upload speeds were between 250 and 300 kbps. I found that most of the tasks I tested, except for streaming video, felt smooth and normal.</p>
<p>Speeds could degrade on a large plane with scores of people online simultaneously. But Aircell claims it has the technology to make my experience representative for anyone doing common tasks, such as Web surfing and email. During my test flight, eight laptops and six Wi-Fi-enabled smart phones were using the system simultaneously. All registered decent speeds, except for a couple of minutes when the plane was crossing between the zones controlled by the company&#8217;s ground-based towers.</p>
<p>Aircell gets Internet access to the planes through a network of 92 towers scattered across North America. These essentially are cellphone towers, carrying a high-speed cellphone data signal, except that the Aircell antennas point up, into the sky. A receiver on the underside of the aircraft picks up the signal, which is then distributed through the plane via Wi-Fi.</p>
<p>The companies say Gogo is safe and won&#8217;t interfere with the plane&#8217;s operation. It is government-approved, and pilots can shut the system off should they deem it necessary.</p>
<p>Gogo has some limitations. The service plans to allocate its capacity so that low-bandwidth activities like Web surfing and email take priority over high-bandwidth ones like streaming video. That means you may find video to be slow and halting.</p>
<p>And Gogo is a North American, land-based service only. It won&#8217;t work over the oceans and, for now, it won&#8217;t work on other continents.</p>
<p>But for U.S. travelers who want to stay connected in the air, Gogo does the job.</p>
